The pacing and comedy bits probably can be attributed to director James W. Horne, a longtime Hal Roach director, who piloted several of Laurel and Hardy's best films, including Big Business and Way Out West. For example, the brawl in Chapter 3 is extremely slapsticky, with Terry poking one henchman in the eyes a la Moe Howard, kicking another in the shins, dumping a pitcher of water on another, etc. And Jack Leonard is extraordinarily hammy as the gorilla, doing all sorts of clownish gestures and movements that even a traditional movie ape would never do.
Each Chapter Foreword is identical with only the last paragraph changed for each Chapter.
The soundtrack for chapter 5 was apparently lost, so for the DVD release, the dialogue was relooped (none too well) by anonymous modern voice actors, with music and sound effects lifted from other chapters.
This newspaper comic strip started on October 22, 1934. Milton Caniff quit in 1947, in order to start his "Steve Canyon" strip. "Terry and the Pirates" was continued by George Wunder until he retired on February 23, 1973. The Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate then discontinued the strip that once was seen in more that 300 newspapers daily-and-Sunday but declined over the years to slightly over 100 newspapers.
