Raiders of the South

Johnny Brownell, former Confederate officer turned Federal agent, is sent to Texas during the reconstruction years to obtain evidence against a gang of raiders who have been making life difficult for the local carpet-baggers. He saves the life of Shorty Kendall, an unreconstructed rebel about to be hanged, and this wins him the gratitude of Belle Chambers, a widow whose husband was killed in the Civil War who hates all Yankees with a fever.

Johnny Mack Brown stars in an agreeable oater which passes the time well enough, but it never reaches exciting heights. Gunplay is light, but it's not too bad nevertheless as a time passer. The subject of carpetbaggers and the south is interesting, but the plot lacks that drive and excitement. Raymond Hatton and Evelyn Brent as Belle Chambers lend good support.

Prologue: 1865 brought to a close the Civil War, but the wounds of battle were still unhealed. Carpetbaggers and renegades roamed the land, leaving in their wake hatred and distrust. The situation became so critical that the Secret Service was called in to prevent martial law in many of the states.
