Jumping The Shark: The Meaning & Happy Days Origin Of The Popular Phrase
Image
When a television series becomes a full-fledged hit, creatively and/or commercially, a great deal of pressure is immediately placed on its showrunner, writers, and producers to keep their audience engaged. The trick for these creatives is to give viewers more of what they love while also keeping the show from growing stale -- but how to go about this has changed drastically over the years, particularly for sitcoms.

When people tuned into series like "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "The Odd Couple," and "The Bob Newhart Show," they weren't eagerly anticipating the next chapter in an ongoing narrative as they did/do with modern sitcoms like "Arrested Development," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," and "Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage." While those older shows did feature characters attempting to achieve certain objectives over the course of several seasons, viewers generally kept coming back just to see superb comedic ensembles generate big laughs. And...

Exclusive: Unlike Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte Will Not Be Swimming With Sharks for Nat Geo Wild's SharkFest
Jeah?!

Who needs Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week when you can watch Nat Geo Wild’s SharkFest? Well, that's Ryan Lochte's thinking, anyway.

The Olympic swimmer -- who is not Michael Phelps and is not going to be racing a great white shark on Discovery -- is dutifully promoting that other channel’s week-long shark-themed programming. In fact, that’s all the silver-haired athlete-turned-Dancing With the Stars competitor-turned-dad competitor is doing…

In an exclusive look at Nat Geo Wild’s new promo, Lochte begrudgingly embraces the “second best” stature that the channel has accepted for its own shark week, which it says is filled “with first-rate premieres.”

“Besides, No. 1 is a state of mind. Right, Ryan?” the narrator asks in the clip.

NatGeo

While Lochte is, sadly, not going to be facing off against any underwater predators in the imagined Lochte vs. Shark, SharkFest does promise to be a week full of thrills thanks...

Shark Week (1987)
Eli Roth Takes a People Staffer Swimming with Baby Blacktip Sharks and Stingrays
Shark Week (1987)
For a full week, I dove in the Pacific with everything from a pack of Lemon sharks to a single 17-ft Tiger shark, but the moment we jumped in the water with stingrays, I was beyond spooked. This experience should have been a piece of cake, especially given the last few days of intense diving, where I literally could have lost my life to a shark, but if I never have to see another stingray I'll be ok with that. Our Discovery Channel Shark Week crew couldn't have disagreed with me more. From Shark After Dark host Eli Roth (who...

Shark Week (1987)
" When I sat down for a casual lunch in New York City with my editor, the Discovery Chanel head of PR, and Philippe Cousteau (yes, the Cousteau, (his grandfather is the legendary under water explorer Jacques Cousteau,) the last thing on my mind was going swimming with sharks for Shark Week. Acteurism: Joel McCrea in "Barbary Coast"
In 1935 director Howard Hawks had a reputation for directing fast action films that were shot like screwball comedies. Before the Hays code, he directed Paul Muni as an Al Capone persona for the “most violent picture” of the time, Scarface (1932). Films about violent sports and vehicles and the men in control of them also got the Hawks treatment with The Dawn Patrol (1930), The Crowd Roars (1932), and The Prizefighter and the Lady (1933). The tagline for that last one’s poster reads: “Girls! There’S A New Passion In Your Life!” Hawks’ strengths lie in that spectacle of unfettered action for the boys, star power for the girls. His marketing image had stepped out of genre pictures before with more straightforward dramas Tiger Shark (1932)and Today We Live (1933). In Twentieth Century (1934), Hawks even ventured into full screwball territory (I’d wager that the Code taking away his violent sensibilities may have something to do with this,...

Steve Irwin's Tragic Death: Cameraman Says His Finals Words Were 'I'€.m Dying'
Justin Lyons, the cameraman who was with Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin in the final moments of his life, recently recounted what exactly happened in the incident that caused his death.

Steve Irwin's Final Moments Revealed

In his interview with Australian talk show Studio Ten, Lyons said that on the day of Irwin's death, they had been in the process of filming a documentary feature called Ocean's Deadliest in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. They couldn’t find any Tiger Sharks, but when they came across a typically docile stingray, the two decided to shoot some footage for another project.

“This one was extraordinarily large. It was 8-foot-wide. Massive,” said Lyons. “Stingrays are normally very calm. If they don’t want you to be around them, they’ll swim away. They’re very fast swimmers.”

)

Believing they weren’t facing any danger, Lyons and Irwin hopped out of the inflatable...

Rockstar Confirms Grand Theft Auto Online Microtransactions
Confirming reports from earlier this week, Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto Online (the upcoming multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V) will include optional microtransactions that will allow players to use real-world money to purchase in-game cash.

Rockstar Games made the announcement via a post on their website, which reads in part:

“You can either quickly accumulate cash through profitable activities like knocking over armored cars, winning street races, doing stick-ups or a host of other cash-making endeavors – or if you’re the completely instant gratification type, you can choose to buy denominations of GTA$. You will have the option to purchase GTA$ through the in-game Store. The game and its economy have been designed and balanced for the vast majority of players who will not buy extra cash. There is no in-game paywall and nothing that should disrupt the balance of the game. You don’t...

Five Electro Stories Fit For 'Amazing Spider-Man 2'
by Ryan Rigley

Jamie Foxx is reportedly in talks to play Max Dillon (a.k.a. Electro) in Marc Webb's "Amazing Spider-Man" sequel. This, of course, comes just weeks after it was announced that prominent Spider-Man characters Mary Jane Watson and Harry Osborn will also be making their debut in the upcoming "Spider-Man" film, which is now shaping up to be one hell of a summer blockbuster.

With Fox as Dillon all but official, now's as good a time as any to compile a list of the five Electro stories best suited for the silver screen. Check 'em out after the jump!

The Return of Sin-Eater

Taking place after Max Dillon and Stan Carter (the serial killer known as Sin-Eater) have been released from prison, "The Return of Sin-Eater" sees Electro publicly humiliating Spider-Man several times over. In their first encounter, Electro zaps him unconscious and makes a run...

Return of the Italian Shark: Cruel Jaws (1995)
Theres only one shark that can do that kind of damage. A Tiger Shark! Well its too bad the shark seen in the abundant stock footage and bobbing up and down in the water was a Great White! Yep, craptacular Shark Week continues with 1995s magnum opus: Cruel Jaws or Jaws 5 depending on the VHS box art you happened across! This film really has no shame. Marvel’s Next Avengers Film #6: Namor
With a sequel to The Avengers officially confirmed by Marvel/Disney, comic book fans the world over will be contemplating which of the publisher’s other heroes could be added to the line-up, potentially getting their own solo movie as soon as 2014 – filling the popularly acknowledged gap in the schedule alongside Captain America 2 that summer.

Of course, we have to bear in mind that Marvel Studios do not own the film rights to characters as key to their comic book universe as Daredevil, Spider-Man, Wolverine or the Fantastic Four – all of whom have allied with or become members of the Avengers at one time or another – but with that consideration in place, here is another suggestion for Marvel’s Next Avengers Film:

Namor the Sub-Mariner (Namor McKenzie)

Why?: Often depicted shouting his battle cry “imperious rex”, Namor the Sub-Mariner – and so-called “first mutant”* – is the son of an...

'Heroes for Hire' to become 'Villains for Hire'
Edward G. Robinson, Zita Johann, and J. Carrol Naish in Le harpon rouge (1932)
Heroes for Hire will undergo a major revamp in November when the ongoing title is relaunched as Villains for Hire. The new series was announced at Marvel's 'Next Big Thing' panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego this weekend. As part of the announcement a teaser image was released featuring Heroes for Hire star Misty Knight standing alongside several notable villains, including Tiger Shark, Stilt-Man, and Crossfire. Creators Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning launched Heroes for Hire in December last year, but have so far refused to explain what makes Misty turn to supervillains for help. "The reason why Misty is doing what she's doing is key to the plot," Abnett and Lanning told Comic (more)...

Trailer: Soul Surfer – Real Life, Triumph Over The Odds Movie
There are few things more cynically exploited by Hollywood marketers than the knuckle-dragging simple-mindedness of the American dream. The unending and unwavering relief that with a little faith and a lot of hard work all challenges in life abides so completely as to have an almost religious hold of the popular consciousness. Politicians contrive all manner of platitudes and sound bites to this resolutely, obstinately optimistic view of life, and producers and marketers of box office cinema know that so a powerful prejudice is a fast route to easy money.

Given this, it can hardly be a surprise that the life story of Bethany Hamilton has been adapted for the screen. For those unaware of her, Hamilton was a teenage surfer living in Hawaii who lost her arm when she was attacked by a Tiger Shark. She then went on to return to surfing after rehabilitation, followed by a stint...
