- Bob Lane: [angrily to Joan as he leaves] You know, I'm pretty good about that cheating business myself! And all that junk I fed you about being in love with ya was just a lot of conversation! Give me a buzz if you want some windows washed! I'm goin' into business! You know, you may not look so bad from the outside!
- Joan Bradford: Mother's run my life long enough! I'm 21, I'm white, and I've a right to be free!
- Henry Bradford: What are you going to do about it... sit here and mope?
- Joan Bradford: Bob, dear, let me explain.
- Bob Lane: You don't have to explain anything to me. I can't tell you where to go or where not to go or whom you should go with. You're your own boss. If you want to go out with that big chauffeur it's alright with me.
- Joan Bradford: But listen, Bob. I left you...
- Bob Lane: Sure, you left me waiting at the post for 2 hours. If it's a ride you wanted, I've got a car, you know. Of course, it's an old one, but at least it's my own. I don't drive it for somebody else.
- Joan Bradford: Bob, dear, won't you listen to me for a moment?
- Bob Lane: Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not jealous, and we're not married, but when a fella's got a girl, well, he likes to feel that she's his own, that he doesn't have to share her with anybody else. 'Course if it's the big car that made a hit with you, why, I guess I'm out of luck. It will be a long time before I can afford a big car...
