A ship on its way to Apia, Samoa is forced to quarantine in Pago Pago due to an outbreak of smallpox on board. Five passengers missionary Alfred Davidson (Lionel Barrymore) and his wife (Blanche Friderici), Dr. Angus McPhail (Charles Lane) and his wife (Florence Midgley), and ex-nightclub singer/prostitute Sadie Thompson (Gloria Swanson) -- find temporary lodging at a general store that doubles as a hotel, run by Joe Horn (James A. Marcus) and his native wife Ameena (Sofia Ortega). Trouble ensues when Davidson finds that he cannot tolerate Sadie's evil ways, so Davidson sets out to 'save' her.
Sadie Thompson is adapted from the 1923 play Rain by American playwrights John Colton and Clemence Randolph, which was based on British playwright W. Somerset Maugham's short story 'Miss Thompson' (later retitled 'Rain'). The story and play were adapted for the movie by American film-maker Raoul Walsh. Other movie versions of the short story include Pluie (1932) (1932) and the 1953 musical La Belle du Pacifique (1953).
The Samoan Islands are located in the South Pacific, east of Australia. Apia is the capital city of Upolu (Western Samoa), and Pago Pago is the capital of Tutuila (American Samoa).
