Marie Belloc Lowndes wrote "The Lodger" as a short story and then expanded it to a novel, which was dramatized in the following films:
Les cheveux d'or (1927). Alfred Hitchcock's first thriller; and the only silent film of the story. Stars Ivor Novello.
The Lodger (1932). Novello reprises his role as the mysterious lodger. Directed by Maurice Elvey.
Jack l'éventreur (1944). Laird Cregar plays the title role. Also stars Merle Oberon, George Sanders, Cedric Hardwicke and Sara Allgood. John Brahm directed.
Le Tueur de Londres (1953), Jack Palance is the lodger. With Frances Bavier, best known as Aunt Bee from "The Andy Griffith Show (1960)." Hugo Fregonese directed.

This film was distributed by many different DVD companies that did not own the copyright. Only a few took the trouble to find a good print or spend money improving the one they have. You may find the film on any number of cheaply-priced discs. Finding a copy with good picture and sound is another matter. Shop around.
The quality of the music in DVDs of silent movies varies from distributor to distributor. Some record original scores, some carefully piece together a score from public domain sources and some slap on an irrelevant soundtrack. This film does have good distributors that use good music scores. Shop around.
Its U.S. copyright will expire in 2022 (95 years after its release), and its U.K. copyright will expire in 2050 (70 years after the death of director Alfred Hitchcock).
