Image
Exclusive: Disney Original Documentary and Disney+ have won the rights to a big feature documentary package, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Final Elton John Performances And the Years That Made His Legend. No one would comment, but we hear the docu, from Academy Award-nominee R.J. Cutler as well as filmmaker (and longtime Elton John partner) David Furnish, sold for about 30 million.

Designed to serve as the official feature on Elton John, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is comprised of unseen concert footage of him over the past 50 years, hand-written journals and present-day footage of him and his family. The plan for the project is to get a festival run and limited theatrical release and be made available exclusively on Disney+.

A Lion And A Witch And Sam Mendes: Two Shows Lined Up To Replace Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Troubled ‘Cinderella’ In London’s West End
Image
Exclusive: Two shows are being lined up to replace Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella musical which closes after a disappointing, short-lived run in London’s West End.

News of Cinderella’s closure became a contentious affair, causing members of the actors union Equity to picket outside the Gillian Lynne Theatre. Cast, crew, musicians and those working backstage were angered with management because many heard about the show’s demise via social media.

However, no time has been wasted in finding new tenants for the Gillian Lynne. Producers stampeded the place in almost impolite haste.

Tickets for the show that immediately follows Cinderella into the theater in London’s Covent Garden will be on sale by the end of next week.

Deadline has learned that it will be the much trumpeted Elliott & Harper, Catherine Schreiber and Leeds Playhouse production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, adapted from C.S.

Theater Review: ‘A Strange Loop’ Is A Risky, Shocking, Thrilling Theatrical Experience
Image
A Strange Loop, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Michael R. Jackson, is everything Broadway is not — risky, shocking, hilarious, dangerous, thrilling. The meta-meta musical ostensibly follows Usher, an – you got it – usher at The Lion King on Broadway on his journey trying to pen a musical about a black gay man trying […]

The Northman: Inside Robert Eggers’ Epic Viking Saga
Image
The Northman’s Robert Eggers did not know he was making a Viking movie when he sat down with Alexander Skarsgård. The pair were supposed to be having one of those typical industry meetings where talent trades notes, and each party gets a feel for the other person. “Meetings about nothing,” Eggers confides a few years later. And yet, when the writer-director of The Witch and The Lighthouse met the star of Big Little Lies and Tarzan, one word came up time and again: Vikings.

“Maybe it was a meeting about nothing or maybe Alex had specific designs for me, I’m not entirely sure,” Eggers tells us now. “But we sat and started talking, and quickly he said that he had been trying to make a Viking movie for some time with Lars Knudsen, who was one of the producers of The Witch and a friend of mine, and I didn’t know this.

The Lion King: 5 Things Scar Was Right About (& 5 Mufasa Was)
Dany Boon and Philippe Katerine in Le lion (2020)
Fans of The Lion King are encouraged to see Mufasa as the personification of all that is good and to consider his brother, Scar, as pretty much the opposite. Still, Scar has his fans due to the level of wit he possesses and because some consider him to be a sympathetic character to a degree.

Although Mufasa is considered all-wise, there were things that Scar knew better or at least anticipated where Mufasa didn’t. On the flip side, Mufasa was certainly right on the money with a number of his own beliefs, so it’s worth taking a deeper look into where the lion brothers proved to be right.

Guion The Lion, an inspirational children’s book that celebrates the differences in all children through a colorful and exciting journey, is now available on Audible just in time for World Down Syndrome Day (3/21).

Three out of the seven novels C.S. Lewis wrote have already been brought to the screen in years past, with adaptations of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Little information on whether the new movies or shows will be a reboot or a continuation of what is already canon, but considering the time that has passed since the last release it seems safe to assume that a new beginning will occur.

New Sci-Fi Film ‘God of Mars’ Becomes First Feature to Fully Embrace Virtual Production
Image
Filmmaker Peter Hyoguchi will be fully embracing virtual production for “God of Mars,” a science-fiction epic that he promises will include the type of action and special effects usually seen in big budget blockbusters, but for a fraction of the cost.

How? By embracing virtual production and relying on Unreal Engine technology. “God of Mars” will leverage LED walls and Lidar scans to create virtual environments and all the effects from rocket ships to robots.

The film is set on Mars, circa 2099 where a washed-up astro-fighter pilot leads a ragtag team of mercenaries on a mission to take out a charismatic cult leader who has convinced a mining colony to revolt. The movie features a huge, interplanetary scope, air battles slicing through Mars’ canyons, giant robots, futuristic Martian cities, close combat and a mystery about who are the original Gods of Mars.

Screenwriter Jonathan Schriber says that when he wrote...

‘Mad at Disney’: How an Angry Fan Made a Massive TikTok Hit
Image
Last year’s release of The Lion King and Aladdin reboots brought on a wave of disappointment and criticism — a collective realization that Disney’s strategy of releasing live-action versions of classic animated movies was a creatively bankrupt cash-grab.

In Los Angeles, this sentiment spurred Salem Ilese, Bendik Møller, and Jason Hahs to write “Mad at Disney,” which has now turned into one of 2020’s fast-moving viral hits. Hahs convened a writing session in August 2019, not long after he watched The Lion King remake; he was less than thrilled. “I said,...
