Out of Omaha

I grew up dirt poor, running wild across the river in Council Bluffs. I've always been sure had I stayed I never would have got out of poverty. But we did not have to worry about guns and police. Omaha is a very segregated community maybe no longer by conscious design that most people can remember but it's there all the same. You only have to drive through the town while looking at stats to see the whole stew of inequity. It's not just heart breaking, it's wrong and it has to change.

Don't let the synopsis about "overcoming social injustice" fool you into this thinking this is a dull, preachy documentary. This is at its heart the story of two brothers and what they do to survive. It has a powerful message, but you get so caught up in their lives that you only care about what happens to them.

I have lived in Omaha my entire life and it is very much so, racially divided.

Redlining in the past, people looking to continually move West to get away from "violence" still to this day. There is rarely any money invested into sustaining the poorer neighborhoods.

We have mayor who would rather demolish the face of our city than provide any sort of boost in preservation of any of these neighborhoods.

When I was younger, gangs, drive by shootings, vandalism, theft and more were rampant in my north Omaha neighborhood. It's gotten a little better, but not much!

This is a great example of the challenges these young men face.

Not much for one sided documentaries because they are often bias. But this worth watching
