There are slow months for streaming services and then there are “choose a decade-old Chris Nolan movie as a header image” slow months for streaming services. Amazon Prime’s August 2020 clearly falls into the latter camp.

That’s not to say that there aren’t some interesting options arriving this month. August 1 has a few intriguing movies including Four Weddings and a Funeral, Inception, Rain Man, and even Spider-Man 3. But there aren’t many Amazon originals to speak of. Chemical Hearts, starring Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) premieres on August 20. Then on August 28, subscribers can get a sneak peek at Amazon’s new The Boys after show Prime Rewind: Inside the Boys.

After that, however, it’s pretty much just Capone on August 10. And who could turn down watching Tom Hardy just being the Hardiest?

Amazon is out with its list of everything new coming in August, and highlights include Amazon Originals like “Chemical Hearts” and “World’s Toughest Race: Eco Challenge Fiji.”

In terms of Amazon Original series, racing competition series “World’s Toughest Race: Eco Challenge Fiji” is out Aug. 14. New episodes of kids series “Jessy & Nessy” are out Aug. 7, and more “Clifford” is coming Aug. 21. Amazon Original movie “Chemical Hearts,” based on the novel by Krystal Sutherland, is out Aug. 21, and the special “Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys” is out Aug. 28.

Southern crime thriller Arkansas — starring Liam Hemsworth, Vince Vaughn, Clark Duke, Vivica A. Fox, and John Malkovich — has sold out for Vmi International at the Cannes Virtual Market.

Lionsgate, which released the film on May 5 in the U.S. on VOD, doubled down on the feature, which also marks Duke's directorial debut and follows Kyle (Hemsworth) and Swin (Duke), who work for an Arkansas-based drug kingpin named Frog (Vaughn). By day they pose as park rangers, while by night they work as low-level drug couriers.

You might recognize him from The Office, Kickass, and Hot Tub Time Machine his name is Clark Duke, and he just made his directorial debut with the film Arkansas. Not only did Clark direct the film, but he also wrote, starred in, and help produce the film. A triple threat with a delivery that makes for an overall entertaining film. Duke stars as (Swin) who alongside Liam Hemsworth (Kyle) are drug runners for a drug kingpin named Frog who is played very brilliantly by Vince Vaughn. When mistakes are made, and things go awry Swin and Kyle find themselves in a deadly situation. The cast is full of noteworthy actors including John Malkovich, Vivica A. Fox, and Michael Kenneth Williams. Arkansas is based on a book by John Brandon that was published in 2009. Duke co-wrote the script with Andrew Boonkrong. The film has a run time of an hour and fifty-seven minutes.

On the usual Memorial Day holiday, the summer box office is just reaching high gear. This weekend was supposed to launch “F9” into the stratosphere — until the pandemic forced Universal to push back the latest “Fast & Furious” franchise title to April 2, 2021.

As May comes to a close, “Scoob!” is continuing its premium VOD success for Warner Bros. This weekend’s newbie was Paramount’s once-planned April release “The Lovebirds,” starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, which showed up at Netflix, while several other originals launched with varying reactions.

The big new movie of the week is VOD release “Scoob!” (Warner Bros.). All three VOD charts list the animated reboot at #1 for numbers of transactions (not revenue).

Warners had intended to release the Hanna Barbera feature in theaters, but moved it swiftly to Pvod where it clicked instantly, even faster than the April 10 Pvod launch for “Trolls World Tour” (Universal), which has remained high on VOD charts; three weeks ago it had been rented more than 95 million times in the U.S. With this apparent success, Warners Bros. might be expected to release some results, but unlike the theatrical box office, there is no established system for revealing immediate numbers.

Josh Trank’s “Capone” (Vertical), starring a cigar-chomping Tom Hardy as the ultimate gangster, was released last Tuesday at $9.99 (priced higher than the standard VOD release) and ranked as high as #2 on iTunes before settling there at #4 as well as FandangoNOW.

Movie fans focused on VOD value this week — an easy choice, with no new major releases. (That will change in a few days with the Warner Bros. original family title “Scoob!” at $19.99.) Sony’s “Bloodshot” opened the last weekend theaters operated, became a $19.99 premium VOD offering a few weeks later, and last Tuesday it dropped to $5.99. It now stands in the top three for all of our reported charts, including #1 at Amazon Prime, and #2 at FandangoNow which ranks by amount paid, not transactions.

“I Still Believe” dropped its prices to $5.99 this week, and their chart placements improved. This flags a potential issue: How many people will get used to holding off for a few weeks, in exchange for seeing the price drop by 60 percent or more? Many of these viewers were content to wait three months after initial theatrical play, so delaying rental for a month might not be a tough choice.

Chilly, sarcastic, over-the-top: all the usual adjectives used to describe a Quentin Tarantino film can also be attributed to “Arkansas.” The directorial debut of comedic actor Clark Duke, “Arkansas” is more an homage to Tarantino’s ’90s run than a celebration for a new voice. It is the feature directorial debut of Clark Duke, who also adapted the script and co-stars. Good performances from a veteran cast can't overcome an obvious plot. Style trumps substance as simplistic supporting characters come and go illogically. A country and blues driven soundtrack from The Flaming Lips may be more memorable than the film.

Some films can survive the coronavirus better than others. Some — the quieter ones, the documentaries, the character studies — don’t need a big screen or a raucous film-festival audience or a packed house to make their pleasures known. Some can do quite well in front of a living-room audience of one or two.

“Arkansas” is not one of those films.

Of all the films that have been forced to go straight to streaming and VOD because of theater closings and film-festival cancellations due to Covid-19, Clark Duke’s offbeat black comedy might be the one that most misses its original release format. The film was to have premiered in the Austin Convention Center at the South by Southwest Film Festival — and if ever a film was made for a big, rowdy festival crowd with an appreciation for off-the-wall humor, it is this one.

Oftentimes they fail miserably.

Month #2 of full quarantine is here and we’re left with much of the same as the first. Theaters remain closed, indies have forgone their theatrical releases for digital-only (and the Oscars have officially allowed certain titles to be eligible this year despite it), and the odd straight-to-vod premium title is dropping to make AMC Theatres mad.

So posters are once more relegated to digital-only exposure. It might not be their natural multiplex wall habitat, but at least they’re here to get the word out anyway. And if nothing else,...

Though much of the entertainment industry is currently paralyzed by Coronavirus and the lockdowns imposed to curb its spread, streaming services are now making out like bandits. Netflix and Amazon Prime both have reported record viewing figures, though that isn’t particularly surprising given that they have an almost literally captive audience.

Anyhow, with all eyes on the small screen, anything new and exciting is eagerly hoovered up. And after learning about all of the new and exciting shows and movies hitting Netflix in May, now it’s Amazon Prime’s turn.

There’s a long list of films that attempt to show how criminal enterprises aren’t always run by the mob, cartels, or rogue terrorist groups. This other type of thriller shows that sometimes criminal activity is carried out by some of the weirdest, ill-equipped people you can imagine. Hell, filmmakers like the Coen Brothers have pretty much given the blueprint on how to do these types of movies the right way. Hopefully, Clark Duke followed the Coen’s lead in the new film “Arkansas.”

As seen in the trailer, “Arkansas” follows the drug trafficking activity of a group of Southern folks, as they attempt to evade the law, other criminals, and early death.

Starz is the latest entertainment company to pull out of the annual SXSW festival over coronavirus concerns, a source tells Variety, canceling its screening and activation for Cape Cod crime drama series “Hightown” and its featured session for “Power.”

There have thus far been 14 confirmed cases of the respiratory illness in Texas. The premium cabler joins a growing number of Hollywood studios and tech giants that will not be going to Austin for the event — a list that includes Amazon Studios, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, and Netflix.

Lionsgate, Starz’s parent corporation, will not be withdrawing entirely, though it plans to restrict its presence at the festival. Lionsgate Home Entertainment is keeping screenings for films “The Quarry” and “Arkansas” on the schedule, but will not send staff or talent.

SXSW runs from March 13 through March 22.

The film follows a pair of low-level drug runners in the Dixie Mafia, portrayed by Hemsworth and Duke, who live by the orders of an Arkansas-based drug kingpin, played by Vaughn, whom they’ve never met. But when a deal goes horribly wrong, deadly consequences ensue. Principal photography began this week in Alabama.

Producers on “Arkansas” are Patrick Hibler, Jeff Rice, Martin Sprock and Storyboard Media. Media Finance Capital’s David Gilbery and Charles Dorfman funded the film and will serve as executive producers alongside Hercules Film Fund. Some may have thought the Purge franchise would live forever, but the film’s creator James DeMonaco has confirmed there will only be one more to go, making it the fifth and final instalment.

DeMonaco, who has written all four films and directed the first 3 spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his plans for the franchise. He revealed he has already come up with an idea to finish the franchise would had everyone psyched at the pitch.

“I have it in my head. I think I’m going to write it. I think it’s a great way to end it all. We want to end it all, I think, in this one, and I’m very excited. When I came up with the idea and pitched it to everybody, they seemed psyched, and I think it will be a really cool ending, how we take this one home.”
