Avis à la une
I've never been a fan of legal dramas because most are set in the States and feature horrific crimes that are often based on the same horrific crimes that occur in the States. I personally don't find that enjoyable. I thought I would give this show a try because we Canadians don't presently have a legal drama of our own that is set in Canada. Another reason I watched I watched is because of Vinessa Antoine, who is a great lead. I've watched her in supporting roles before (I LOVED Being Erica and when I'm off on Fridays I often check out what's up on General Hospital (the new Jordan was a poor casting choice and can't act, but I digress) and Vinessa is showing that she can lead a show.
I'm glad I watched and will continue to do so. I've even learned some things about Nova Scotia that I didn't know! Only one thing would make the show better, a better production budget, because it looks like they've only spent a few thousand dollars more than the Canadian shows I used to watch when I was a little girl. But then again, this is on CBC, and I don't want my taxes to go up :)
This CBC drama is superb. I am have practiced law in Halifax, and their depiction of lawyers at Legal Aid, the "big" firm, and the law school are dead on. The treatment of the black and indigenous issues is nuanced and compelling. The actors are great, the characters are developed and Halifax, Dartmouth and Martinique Beach are shown to advantage. Having binged all 17 episodes on CBCGem recently, there wasn't one that was weak or contrived. Bravo Floyd Kane and the CBC!
Finally CBC got it right. This show is modern, as the issues are real for our times. One episode explored the treatment that a First Nation female had to endure in our society. Also having a First Nation male lawyer understanding her perspective while their economic place in society is very different, their respect for truth and honour are the same.
I really enjoyed this show last season! I tuned into watch the premiere of season 2 and was not disappointed! It's refreshing to watch a show with so much multiculturalism and based in a Canadian city. Vanessa is a fabulous lead and the story lines are intriguing. I look forward to watching the rest of this season hope they do more than 6 episodes moving forward!
While it starts slow by US standards it is not all blood and guts and infighting and that is refreshing I think it has promise and there is a lot to build on
