Warning: english is not my native language, so probably there are some mistakes here.
I was just scrolling on Twitter (or X, anyway) and I saw a post saying this movie was streaming on Max. As horror is my favorite genre and I hadn't seen any good Brazilian horror movie, I decided to give this one a chance. And it was a good decision!
The characters of this movie are very good and work well in the plot. They all help to build the scary atmosphere, something really important in a horror movie. The cast rocks! Everyone here gives a beautiful acting, and I want to highlight the acting of the actresses who play Thomas' aunts, they are the highlight of cast!
I'd like to devote an entire paragraph just about two characters: Thomas and Beni. Their relationship is very well written: you can feel their problems, you can feel their differences, but you can feel their love. I really cared for them (something rare for me).
The immersion is perfect, I have nothing bad to say about it, the direction and the screenplay did it very well. The house which the movie revolves around has a scary vibe that gives a message to the spectator: there's something wrong there. Not just visually, of course, the characters and the (wonderful) soundtrack helped.
Ok. Let's talk about the bad things now.
Now and then, the screenplay is convenient and lazy. It doesn't annoy much, it's things I can pretend I didn't notice, but it's important to say.
The dialogues in Portuguese are, sometimes, not natural. Some words are not what people use in day to day.
I gave this movie an eight. I just said two bad things and a lot of good things, I know, and you may think I am being unfair here, but I have established criteria and, according to my criteria, Birthright is an eight. A movie with 9 or 10 of grade is movie that I consider a "must-watch" movie, which it's not the case here (Birthright gives what it promises, nothing more than that).
