Samhain for me was one of those random pick and mix watch before bed Youtube movies therefore I had absolutely no expectations going in. This often works to a movies favour, unspoiled by trailers and with an undoubted element of surprise.
It tells the story of a girl house sitting who comes under siege by a masked assailant. Yes, that plot again. That particular plot that we've seen a hundred times, but surely they put some kind of spin on it right?
Well actually yes, kind of. The spin is that the evil doers attack on the house makes up mere minutes of the film and the rest of it is sheer unadulterated filler to extents I'm not sure I've ever seen before.
The film only stands at an hour long so there truly is no excuse, they couldn't find content within this heavily played out genre to fill an hour? The majority of the movie is pointless banter that contributes nothing to the story and actual filler scenes. What I mean by that is you know when a movie will do a cut away, we'll maybe see the outside of the house or the moon etc? Well the film does that a great deal and each time to ridiculous degrees.
30 seconds outside looking at the house, followed by a mundane scene, followed by 30 seconds looking at the moon, followed by a mundane scene, followed by 30 seconds of watching the girl sleeping on the couch. Why did they feel the need to do this? It prevents the movie from having any degree of pacing not to mention gets real old real fast.
Then we have the camerawork. The actual camera quality is better than you'd expect, but the lack of ability keep the damn thing still is very frustrating. Shaky cam is for found footage movies and found footage movies alone.
Then we have the story itself, there basically isn't one. It's devoid of story, originality and is essentially 50 minutes of filler, weak character development and 10 minutes of poorly constructed ultimately pointless "Horror".
I truly don't know what the creators were thinking.
The Good:
The actual visual quality is above par for something of this budget
The Bad:
Awful cinematography
Needless drawn out "Filler" scenes
Devoid of any originality
