Disney Plus Drops Trailer, Key Art for French Fantasy Sci-Fi Original ‘Parallels’

Disney Plus has unveiled the trailer and key art for “Parallels,” its new French Original series which has been described as a fantasy sci-fi series in the vein of “Stranger Things.” All six episodes will launch on March 23 on Disney Plus’ platform worldwide.

“Parallels” tells the story of four friends — Bilal, Romane, Samuel and Victor — whose lives are turned upside down when a mysterious event scatters the group into different timelines. The four teenagers will do all they can to understand what has happened and try to get back to the carefree innocence of their former lives.

The series is headlined by teenagers and features many fresh faces, including Thomas Chomel (“Clem”), Omar Mebrouk, Jules Houplain (“Hpi”), Jade Pedri (“Ils étaient dix”), Naidra Ayadi and Guillaume Labbé. Other cast members include Gil Alma (“César Wagner”), Elise Diamant (“Mensonges”), Dimitri Storoge, Agnès Miguras (“Askip”), Maxime Bergeron, Victoria Eber (“Beyond Appearances”) and Timoté Rigault.

Netflix is planning an English-language take on the French feature Les Invisibles with Cannes regular Nadine Labaki set to direct.

The Invisibles will take place at a day shelter where, according to the project’s synopsis, “homeless people congregate for food, warmth, and connection. When local officers decide to close the shelter, social workers have three months to reintegrate the women they care for — at any cost.”

The 2018 original French film from director Louis-Julien Petit is based on the novel Sur la route des invisibles: Femmes dans la rue by Claire Lajeunie.

Sébastien Lifshitz’s documentary is named Best French Film 2020 while Josep by Aurel is crowned the winner in the first films category. Awarded by a jury composed of critics and key figures from the world of the 7th art and presided over by Gilles Jacob, the prestigious 2020 Louis-Delluc Award for the French film of the year has gone to Sébastien Lifshitz’s Adolescentes, which is the first documentary to have scooped this prize since 2008 (Modern Life by Raymond Depardon) and only the fourth in the award’s history (following the Louis-Dellucs won by Nicole Védrès in 1947 and Jean Rouch in 1958). Cgr’s Immersive Premium Format Outperforms Imax in France (Exclusive)
While premium large formats such as Imax, Dolby Cinema and 4Dx played a key role in boosting France’s box office in 2018, the Immersive Cinema Experience (Ice) launched by French multiplex chain Cgr proved to be the country’s most popular premium format.

With movies such as “Deadpool 2,” “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Aquaman,” Ice theaters lured 80% more moviegoers than Imax in France and saw a 55% year-on-year increase in ticketing revenues compared to classic screens, as well as 40% more in B.O. gross compared to regular screens in the same location in 2018, according to Cgr’s data.

France’s second-biggest multiplex chain, Cgr boasts a total of 680 screens, including 27 Ice screening rooms. A ticket for Ice is on average €12 to €13, compared to €6.90 for a classic screen. One of the best opening day for a French film so far this year, “By The Grace of God” is inspired by the scandal surrounding Bernard Preynat, a Roman Catholic priest who was accused of having abused scouts from 1986 to 1991, and was finally indicted in 2016 after several victims decided to file lawsuits. These preview pages from American Carnage #4 shows that Hill & Fernandez's American Carnage feels like the best of mid-period Vertigo.

American Carnage is a revelation. Bryan Edward Hill, a rising star at DC who won praise for his work on The Wild Storm: Michael Cray and Detective Comics has a straight up throwback Vertigo book here with art partner Leandro Fernandez.

In my mind, there are two main periods of Vertigo comics. There's launch era Vertigo - British Invasion comics like Sandman, Invisibles, or Hellblazer - the weird urban fantasy from the British titans of comics like Gaiman, Ennis, Morrison, or Delano. And then there's mid-period Vertigo, when they moved away from the Swamp Things of the world and onto immersive crime slice of life stuff like 100 Bullets and Scalped. Gilles Lellouche’s “Sink or Swim,” Mikhaël Hers’s “Amanda,” Louis-Julien Petit’s “Invisibles” and Eva Husson’s “Girls of the Sun” are set to screen at the 24th edition of the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema showcase which is co-organized by The Film Society of Lincoln Center and UniFrance.

After world-premiering out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, “Sink or Swim” became a box office hit in France and got nominated for 10 Cesar Awards. The film is headlined by a popular French cast, including Mathieu Amalric (“At Eternity’s Gate”), Guillaume Canet (“Rock’n Roll”), Virginie Efira (“Elle”) and Leila Bekhti (“Midnight Sun”).

“Girls of the Sun,” which competed at Cannes, stars Golshifteh Farahani (“Paterson”) as a resistance fighter part of an all-female battalion made up of former captives of extremists who have vowed to reconquer their own land.

Charades Closes Deals on ‘Invisibles,’ ‘The Shiny Shrimps’ (Exclusive)
Charades has closed a raft of sales on Louis-Julien Petit’s heartfelt social comedy-drama “Invisibles,” which has been a box office hit in France since opening last month.

Inspired by a true story, “Invisibles” follows the journey of social workers who embark on a race against the clock to integrate some homeless women back into society by all means, even unorthodox ones, before the shutting down of their shelter.

The movie was acquired for Germany (Piffl Medien), Spain (Vertigo), Italy (Teodora), Canada (Az Films), Austria (Thimfilm), Sweden (Folkets Bio), Israel (New Cinema), Greece (Weird Wave), Switzerland (Frenetic), the Middle East (Empire), Portugal (Cinemundo) and Benelux (Vertigo).

In France, where the Yellow Vest movement has staged protests with demands for lower taxes, higher wages and better support for retirees, “Invisibles” has struck a chord with local audiences thanks to film’s social themes and uplifting tone.
