From left to right as we see them, they are four Second World War ribbons: War Medal 1939 to 1945; The Defence Medal; The France and Germany Star; 1939 to 1945 Star. The entire ribbon bar is actually being worn by the Captain upside-down, as the official Order of Wear for his medals dictates they should be displayed starting with the 1939 to 1945 Star. This is my observation from Season 1, I don't know if this was rectified for later seasons or if it is intentional. An explanation for the inverse order is offered in S5e5 which focuses on the Captain's back story.

It's the same premise but no, it's not a remake.

The boiler room was a mass grave for plague or black death victims. They can come and go, just I don't think the others want the smelly ones around.

S1E6 the military guy invites them upstairs and they say they prefer staying down there.

While this is a likely costuming mishap, a plausible explanation is offered in s5e5, though not a particularly satisfactory one for this specific item
