First published in 1942, Albert Camus’ The Stranger — also known as The Outsider — was a popular fashion accessory in the post-punk ’70s, being heavy in content and light enough in weight to carry around in the pockets of the overcoats worn by devotees of the British band Joy Division. That it was what you might nowadays call “a quick read” undoubtedly contributed to its popularity, and its troubled hero spoke volumes to moody, rebellious teenagers who’d moved on from Catcher in the Rye. Around the same time, it gave proto-goth band The Cure an early hit in the form of “Killing an Arab,” which perfectly distilled the themes and narrative of the novel into two minutes and 21 seconds of art-rock.

Stephen King fans have even more reasons to be happy. MGM+ released the adaptation of The Institute earlier this summer, and it was a smash hit.
Ahead of the show's Season 1 finale on Aug. 24, MGM+ has officially confirmed The Institute will return with Season 2. Since its release on July 13, the show has spent the entire time in the Top 10, fluctuating between the No. 1 spot and second and third place, never leaving the charts. This was enough for MGM+ to bet on the show.

The It films were terrifying in their own right — creepy sewers, strange visions, and a clown you’d cross continents to avoid. But there’s something about Welcome to Derry that feels different — it’s just not about replaying old nightmares, but something even more unsettling we are not aware of. This is ground zero for the fear, the moment the town’s curse took root.
And now, we’re finally going to see just how far Derry’s darkness spreads.
From what we know, HBO isn’t rushing the scares. Instead, it appears that they are creating an atmosphere that gradually seeps into you with each episode. The kind that makes you mistrust every shadow, every flicker of light, and every neighbor who smiles a bit too broadly. The series will stretch back decades before the Losers’ Club, filling in the blanks the films only hinted at.

HBO's The Outsider is taking over the streaming charts after the success of another Stephen King adaptation.
PerFlixPatrol, 2020's The Outsider has officially reached the number four spot on the chart of the top streaming series and TV shows on HBO Max. As of the time of writing, The Outsider sits just below The Gilded Age, while And Just Like That... and Rick and Morty both dominate the list from the number one and two spots, respectively.

Stephen King's new sci-fi thriller series continues its streaming chart dominance nearly three weeks after the series first started airing. Adaptations of Stephen King's work range across various movies and TV shows, all of varying quality. This includes critically praised films like 2017's Itto the critically less-successful outings, such as The Dark Tower movie. TV shows are another matter.
There have been several successful TV shows based on King's work in recent years. This includes miniseries like 11.22.63 and The Outsider, to multi-season shows like Mr. Mercedes. There's also even more adaptations in the works, like Mike Flanagan's upcoming Carrie series. However, one ongoing show has become a massive success on streaming, and has continued a lengthy streak.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Smoke,” through Episode 5, “Size Matters.”]
Modern TV release models are often dictated by whatever makes sense for the network, but Apple TV+ gave “Smoke” a two-episode premiere for a very clear narrative reason: the twist at the end of Episode 2.
For most of the crime thriller’s first two hours, series lead Dave Gudsen (Taron Egerton) fits a heroic mold. He’s an arson investigator working alongside a detective (Jurnee Smollett) to catch two serial fire-starters. He’s got a wife and kid at home. He teaches on weekends and even writes fiction in his spare time.
But every so often, a curious blemish appears on Dave’s picture-perfect portrait. The book he’s working on is poorly written. His arson courses are more flash than substance. He’s emasculated at home, whether it’s by the stepson who thinks he’s a loser or the pill he needs to perform with his wife,...

Stephen King has given a glowing review to his latest TV adaptation, The Institute, which is scheduled to premiere on MGM+ on July 13, 2025. The eight-episode series adapts Stephen King's book of the same name, which was first published in 2019.

Good news for Cyberpunk fans, Apple TV+ is bringing a bold adaptation of William Gibson’s Neuromancer. This adaptation of the sci-fi cult classic embraces the roots of the genre rather than echoing than beating about the bush.
Along with its other sci-fi hits such as Foundation, Severance, and Murderbot, Apple TV+ is shaping up a diverse and vibrant ecosystem for sci-fi viewers, and Neuromancer looks like a promising addition to it. The channel has attempted to create a series that would interest devoted fans and new viewers alike and be a gripping watch, whether you’re a veteran or novice to the genre.

As announced in February 2024, Apple TV+ has given the green signal for Neuromancer adaptation into a 10-episode series. This is a significant shift from the previous movie attempts on the same theme that didn’t work out.

The actress did not hesitate. Holly Gibney, she responded, the oddball private detective in HBO’s “The Outsider” who originated in a series of Stephen King novels.
“The Outsider” is one of more than 50 novels by the prolific King that have been translated into big and small screen stories, earning a staggering $3 billion and counting at the box office.

To be fair, I’d watch anything with the word “mob” in it. There’s just something special about crime dramas that I can’t seem to get over the drama. However, Paddy Considine’s MobLand still stands out from the crowd. While Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren were incredible in their respective roles, it was Paddy Considine who truly stole the show for me.
The British crime thriller pulls no punches with its intense storytelling, grimy atmosphere, and sharp characters. But let’s be real – Paddy Considine is the one name that truly elevates the entire experience. As we wait for an update on the second season, there is another killer performance from him you can watch on Hulu.

Remember the "Mr. Mercedes" TV series? Few might.
"Mr. Mercedes" ran for 30 episodes over the course of three seasons from 2017 to 2019. It was a detective series starring Brendan Gleeson, Harry Treadaway, Justine Lupe, Kelly Lynch, and Mary-Louise Parker, and it was based on a trilogy of hard-boiled novels -- "Mr. Mercedes," "Finders Keepers," and "End of Watch" -- written by Stephen King in 2014 and 2015. The books began with the story of a retired homicide detective named Kermit "Bill" Hodges (Gleeson) who became involved in a serial killer case he was never able to close while still active. They got weirder from there.
The show was developed by TV superstar David E. Kelley, and was pretty well received by viewers and critics. The first season sports an 84% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on a scant 29 reviews. The second season got a full-on 100% approval rating, but only four reviews were published.

Stephen King makes no bones about turning humans into the real monsters of his stories wherever necessary. For all that Carrie White is a dangerous telekinetic, it's the banal teenage bully and a fanatic mother that puts her over the edge. "Firestarter" stars a rogue government agency willing to manipulate civilians, and "The Stand" may ultimately come down to cosmic horror and angelic good, but it all begins with our hubris among the natural world of viruses. It's up front stuff, but it's also not the only kind of horror King likes to put into play.
"True" monsters do lurk in King's stories, and while not every one of them is the creepiest thing ever put to page, everyone eventually finds a favorite critter to be horrified by. Some need more time to shine before they become standouts, and a few only serve to move the plot around. But others are truly scary,...

Karyn Kusama has charted a unique course throughout her 20-plus-year career in the movie business. Her 2000 debut Girlfight was an indie hit, giving her the chance to tackle big-budget sci-fi spectacle in 2005's Æon Flux. That movie flopped with critics and at the box office, and her next project, 2009's Jennifer's Body, didn't do a whole lot better. Luckily, time has been kinder to Jennifer's Body, which has gone on to be considered an underrated feminist horror classic in the intervening years.

It is not uncommon for movie adaptations to change elements of the book in order to give audiences a more visually compelling experience. In other instances, writers and directors have to change elements from the book due to rights and ownership of specific concepts or properties. These changes can work out really well, or sometimes they can have a negative effect on the audience. In most cases, adaptations will already have a large following of fans and those fans will expect the adaptation of their favorite books or comics or games to adhere to the original vision of the source material.

How well a movie performs at the box office is just as often a function of how well it's marketed as how well it's made. The current number 1 movie on Netflix in the U.S. is a perfect example of this. The marketing of any movie begins with the title. And, wow, did they ever miss on this one.
The movie in question is To Catch a Killer, a solid suspense film released in 2023. It came out on April 21st and almost immediately disappeared from movie screens everywhere. She takes over as emcee from Ariana DeBose, who hosted the past three shows. Erivo is a former Tony winner herself, having captured the best actress in a musical prize in 2016 for her turn in the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple.” She is currently nominated for an Oscar for her work as Elphaba in “Wicked.” Previously, she earned nods for her performance in 2019’s “Harriet,” as well as for co-writing “Stand Up,” a song that was featured in that film. Erivo has also won an Emmy for a televised performance of “The Color Purple,” plus a Grammy for the show’s cast recording, putting her tantalizingly close to Egot status.
“I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor,” Erivo said in a statement.

Forty years ago, author William Gibson brought the world a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer – and an adaptation of that story has been trudging its way through development hell pretty much ever since. Versions of a feature film adaptation have passed through the hands of directors like music video maker Chris Cunningham, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob‘s Chuck Russell, Torque‘s Joseph Kahn, Cube‘s Vincenzo Natali, and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller. An adaptation of Neuromancer is currently moving forward as a 10-episode series that’s set up at Apple TV+, and we’ve previously heard that BAFTA Award-nominee Callum Turner of Masters of the Air and The Boys in the Boat will be playing the lead character, Henry Dorsett Case, while Briana Middleton of Sharper and The Tender Bar takes on the role of Case’s partner Molly, “a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes.

In 2020, mere weeks before the pandemic, HBO released a 10-episode miniseries adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Outsider. Developed by the great Richard Price, the series stars Ben Mendelsohn, Cynthia Erivo, Jason Bateman, and Julianne Nicholson, adding a little more grit, grime, and story to the 2018 novel. Critics were impressed as were Constant Readers.
Yet so was The Losers’ Club who covered the series live half a decade ago. Now, in the wake of reviewing the novel, they’re revisiting the proverbial crime scene with a murderers’ row of co-hosts to debate whether this run of television supersedes the source material, Erivo’s take on Holly Gibney, the adjustments to character, and more.
Stream the episode below and return this week when the Losers share their favorite King crushes ahead of Valentine’s Day. For further adventures, join the Club over long days and pleasant nights via Apple Podcasts, Spotify,...

Hulu's new series, Paradise, has only aired a few episodes so far, but it's already clear that Julianne Nicholson's character, Samantha/Sinatra, is one of the most intriguing parts of the show. The more we get to know about her background (a billionaire owner of a start-up who had a young son who tragically passed away), the more fascinating and mysterious her character has become. Sinatra is obviously pulling the strings in the town, but is she a true villain or a woman who has simply been molded by trauma? No matter who she turns out to be, the character is a compelling part of the series because of the immensely talented actor who plays her. In fact, with roles in projects such as Boardwalk Empire, Masters of Sex, and The Outsider, Nicholson is no stranger to playing powerful and complex women. But her true breakout role was...

One of the greatest horror authors ever is Stephen King. There isn't a catalog of work quite like King's, where he continues to push the imagination to new limits with each and every book he writes. In the middle of all his classic horror stories is also one of the best science fiction/fantasy book series ever, The Dark Tower. Stephen King is truly a master storyteller, and he continues to entertain his readers still to this day. For over fifty years now, King has brought new ideas to the horror genre.
When considering what his best works are, it becomes difficult to determine. For die-hard fans of the author's work, there are times when some books are higher on the list than others. The titles can be very interchangeable depending on what kind of mood the reader might be in. However, many of King's works are classics like The Stand and Carrie,...

The Losers’ Club leaves Maine and heads to Flint City, Oklahoma, where a grisly murder demands the talents of Stephen King’s favorite cinephile sleuth Holly Gibney. Published in May of 2018, The Outsider is one of King’s more successful forays into the true crime genre, picking up where he left off with the Mr. Mercedes Trilogy.
It’s a story we covered in capsule form over half a decade ago, but today we’re giving it the true Lc treatment with an official, full-length book episode. Join co-hosts Michael Roffman, Jenn Adams, Rachel Reeves, and Randall Colburn as they weigh in on the balance between true crime and the supernatural, debate whether Holly adds or detracts from said balance, and how the Trump and MeToo era may or may not have had an influence on the story.
