Ad Vitam takes place at an unspecified point in the future. Given the ages that multiple characters profess to be, however, it is clearly at least a couple of centuries into the future. Scientists have discovered away for Humans to live indefinitely through the use of "regeneration", a process that turns back the clock on the body's cells.

Years prior to when the series takes place, a large group of "minors" (anyone under the age of thirty) apparently commit suicide. They all have a tattoo on their arms that consists of two dots. The repetition of this event at the beginning of the story prompts involvement from a detective who, among other things, solicits help from a woman who was previously in the suicide cult but clearly did not go through with it.

The series is never specific about it, but it does have something to do with the biological properties of squids.
