Going to War

I hate to be the one saying, "having been to war...". But, that being the case, this is another piece I truly appreciate from Sebastian Junger. The way in which he conveys the experience of combat is unparalleled to any other documentarian or filmmaker I've seen, in the most productive and entertaining way. War is so much more about the human experience than the adrenaline of the bombs and carnage, the human experience in combat is what had the most deavasting and influential impact on me personally. The experience starts the first day of boot camp and ends some years later, and it tickles my heart to watch this and know that the whole experience CAN be summarized justly, skillfully and informally. Needless to say I enjoyed the damn documentary.

I agree with the first review from joeytxx everyone needs to have an idea of what our soldiers are sacrificing and what motivates them to serve. It was great seeing in on Memorial Day though I wish I had seen it the day before.

The documentary focused on a wide range of topics and concerns but I felt it focused more on the negative and not some of the positive things gained from service.

I think it could have shown how families were impacted as well. Still giving it some thought and reflecting which is a good sign I guess. I would like to give it a solid 8 but for now something still has me giving it a 7. I might need to watch it again.
