It's a 4 and please let's be real, we know it is

As a gay man watching this - and let's overlook the poor acting - it's been dumped with every possible cliche in the dialogue and storyline. There's no argument from me that the message in this story is relevant and powerful however as a film, it falls short on too many levels which leaves it, in my very humble position, as a poor execution of a very real issue.

I really wanted to like this film, or at least aspects of it. But in the end I couldn't.

Having watched a lot of low-budget indie films with LGBTQ+ storylines over the years, I know better than to have unrealistically high expectations. Most such films have obvious shortcomings, but there are usually redeeming aspects as well. Unfortunately, this film's flaws are so glaring that it's pretty much beyond redemption. The topic is an important one and deserves more than the wildly melodramatic treatment it receives here. None of the characters is remotely believable; the protagonists are syrupy sweet paragons, the antagonists cartoonish villains. (To describe them as two-dimensional would be generous.) Though potentially intriguing in places, the story arc fails to overcome its many implausible aspects. The script reads like a cheesy 1970s after-school TV special, but one that a young middle-schooler might have written: there's no subtlety, no complexity of character, and the dialog is stilted, often preachy and almost entirely unconvincing. The acting is mostly amateurish and wooden. The best performances come from Dylan Hartman as Noah and Brian Cain as Parker. (Perhaps that's because melodramatic dialog seems less unconvincing when spoken by adolescent characters?) Daniel Byrne as Jake has some good moments as well, managing at least occasionally to overcome the encumbrances of the heavy-handed scriptwriting.

Feel Like An After School Special For Public Access

While I admire the powerful subject manner that is being tackled in this film, it's done completely wrong. It's amateurishly bad on all levels! The acting is terrible and the story is pretty weak. While I know this kinda of thing happens all the time it comes off unbelievable. This movie borders on ridiculous. There's better movies that tackle hate crimes. Do yourself a favor and Watch those. Avoid this and the fake family, friends and cast member reviews. This movie sucks!

A moving and timely story.

I had mixed feelings watching this at first. As it began, I thought the acting was weak while the story moved slowly, and in what I thought was the wrong direction. Then it all changed. This isn't a glossed over big budget Hollywood movie. The actors realistically portrayed their characters drawing you in, and the story needed to be told. I cheered for Noah, then cringed when I realized where this was going, then...well no spoilers. I watched it again to ensure I fully connected with the strong message. We need more like this.

A powerful and necessary message

Extremely well crafted film delivering a powerful and both heartfelt yet heartbreaking message about equality and acceptance in the United States. I look forward to further films from this director.

Incredibly moving

This was very well done. It was incredibly moving and sad. I just can't comprehend way there is so much ignorance and hate in our world. We are all created equally and we all bleed the same. Kudos. I hope this movie and story goes big!

A Low Budget Film That is Anything But That

I was so excited to see this film and it blew away my expectations. The movie starts off with some audio issues and I was afraid to eat my popcorn as the crunch would overtake the volume of the speaking parts. After the first scene though, my concerns went away and the rest of the film was truly amazing. The fact that the budget was only $13k and the director this great of job with the limited resources he had, shows me that the sky is the limit for this young director.

I found myself filled up with so many emotions. From laughing in one scene, to balling my eyes out at the next. I cant remember crying this much in a movie since shadow couldn't get out of the mud in homeward bound. The subject is real and it was so easy to connect to the characters and their stories. And as much as i love watching football on sundays, seeing this film instead was well worth it.

I got to meet some of the actors and actresses after the premier and they are all genuine, humble people. This movie was so well done that I'm looking forward to watching this film multiple times which is something out of the norm for myself.

Take the time and watch An American Hate Crime. You will not be disappointed. A low budget film that was anything but that. I know that the director has something special in him and I'm excited to see his next film.

must watch!

This movie was well written and delivered an important message that isn't often discussed in todays society. hate crimes are still going on in our world and the more its talked about the more it can be prevented. this was a great movie filled with action, drama, and comedy despite the darkness behind the story.

Incredibly moving and so important

I was disturbed, stunned, and in tears; but I was also thankful and proud that a group of people had the courage and determination to make this film happen. No huge budget, hollywood glamour; just Truth. Difficult, real Truth. The film addresses ongoing and disturbingly increasing occurences in our country, and kudos to the director and the cast, especially the two kids that not only had the courage to take on such difficult roles, but also had the talent to draw their audience in and make us embrace the characters. An American Hate Crime is shocking and emotional, and likely it is all too real for so many. An important story that needed to be told. I highly recommend it.

Great movie to help erase the hate!

A movie about an LGBT hate crime with a twist. The buildup to when the student was attacked solely because of his sexual identity was very well done. It showed how assumptions, biases and homophobia can lead to not only bullying but also it's devastating effects on others when misunderstand and hatred are allowed to fester.

It also tries to portray both sides of the equation to a limited degree while at the same time NOT making any excuses for ignorance and bigotry.

I highly reccomend the film to be shown in all middle and high schools. Although many may consider the topic of this movie to be too sensitive for some students; it is during middle and high school years where bigotry of "others" begins. Armed with how bigotry and biases have real life consequences perhaps hate of others who we dont know can be changed to tolerance and understanding.

This movie IMHO goes a long way in getting the message of tolerance and acceptance across to an audience who needs it the most.

A masterpiece in disguise

Very emotional and definitely well directed, acting wise... Well done for not so popular actors, the plot is definitely well done.

It does give you a a different angle of the story but it seems quite clear that it is all cause and effect overall, hate crime it is unfortunately still real, so get ready for a couple of tears at the end of it, it's a painful but nevertheless a good movie.

Tugs at the heart strings

This movie really has it all, and I would go as far as to call it an emotional roller coaster. You feel anger toward the bad guys in the beginning, sadness toward the boys who get attacked, love for the mother and sister and joy toward the best friend. By the end you feel great for having seen and absorbed a powerful message in a poignant tale. Some of the technical work could be improved, or else I would have given it 10 stars. I highly recommend everyone see this movie.
