Very good series with a good host

Don't see why people don't like the woman host. She's asking questions and listening to the feedback from the people she's interacting with. This is a very informative show that I would recommend if you want to learn new things about these cultures that you may have had a stereotype about before.

Ignore the low ratings: there's no real reason for them

All the negative comments are commenting on the age of the interviewer, insulting the female interviewer for different shallow reasons, complaining about how the focus is on women, how the only good men here are queer men etc. Dumb reasons to give this show a low rating.

Watch this show for yourself. It's very well done and very interesting.

Real sex and the city.

I loved this documentary so much because you can understand the people, culture and everything about a country. I wish to see more cities & countries. I really enjoyed with Beirut during I was watching. A little sad also of course. Worth watching documentary. Amanpour is a great personality and she gives details with objective perspective.

The intent would be good, if it wasn't butchered by the constant judging

Yes we know you find it weird that people do this and this, it's the nth time you repeat it. For a show that aims to understand objectively how societies deal with those subjects it ended up insisting a lot on the weirdness of non-US-centric lifestyles. Also, I get the idea of mainly interviewing women, especially in societies were men have more power in women's love life, it lets them talk more freely. But then the show takes its sweet time showing only queer men are good people and it feels like a Twitter feed. I can remember in the episode about Japan when a girl keeps saying she's fine with her couple not really having sex but they insist for several minutes on "that's not normal!!". Weird. As expected, it's a Netflix show with all the Netflix (anti-)values it carries and the main ideas that stick are that all around the world men are responsible for bad sex and that you have to behave like in New York if you're a civilized human being.

For short, expect a cliché romcom about women talking about their last orgasms more that a documentary.

The interviewer is the worst.

Whatever new information I was trying to get from this documentary was difficult because of the interviewer. She was judgemental, close minded, too focused on proving her point of view that she wasn't really listening to the people she was interviewing. It was like she had a stereotype and she was intended on proving it. I only watched the Tokyo episode and I really can't continue.

Good idea, suboptimal execution.

I have to agree with most of the comments here. This lady isn't so good in her job. Her questions are always like: So is that about sex? instead of listening to the people, that just try to tell their stories. The guy in Berlin told her: you're a bit obsessed about sex. And she doesn't understand what he tries to tell her.. Sex and Love can be many things, more than as what she seems to define it for herself. Great potential, not so optimal execution.

Could've been great

This series could've been really interesting, unfortunately great swathes of her interviews are answered in various languages with no subtitles or translation. Weird.

Eerie, uncomfortable, lacks depth and wrong hostess

Based on the pilot.

The program itself is a bit of a cliche, these subjects have been covered hundreds of times. Especially Japan is a place where many foreigners investigate and report on the cultural and sexual extremities. That was a poor choice for a starting point.

The conversations are quite prude and lack depth. Maybe CNN limits what is acceptable? Overall the show is okay, and has potential but certainly not peaked my interest.

1 Other small point....

I just don't want to talk about sex with Amanpour. No sir! That's the exact feeling a teenager gets when not his mother but his grandmother wants to talk about sex......... that experience is feels uncomfortable and unnatural, so does Amanpour talking about sex. Wrong person for the job.

Not the best interviewer for this subject

The subject sounded quite cool to me: talking in an open manner about different ways to look at sex and intimacy, depending on cultural differences. However, the interviewer seems uncomfortable with her own subject. Every time someone says a thing about sex, she reacts like it is weird or shocking. Open means that someone can ask questions or give answers without fear of judgement by others. But, by her facial expressions, she shows that she does judge, making us judge as well.

Executed badly... cringey host

I was so excited to watch this, until the interviewer opened her mouth. She is very prudish and extremely judgemental. You'd think the producer would pick someone who was open and sexually free to host the show. It would have made all the difference! Christiane is closed minded and won't share in the conversation on personal sexual experiences. She seems like a 65 year old woman who is repressed sexually. She doesn't even seem to be comfortable in her own body. All her questions were the same. It was all about physical sex and that's it. She had many opportunities to delve deeper into the spirituality, emotion, and connection that sex is. She just stared at people with her buggy, poorly lined eyes. What a disappointment! I'd expect this ignorance in 2008, not 2019.

Interesting but shortsighted and limited

It was very interesting to see the the different trends in different cultures however cannot help but notice she chooses only the progressive subcultures as representations. Her Berlin episode with the the afghani couple confirmed to me how short sighted she was and quite ignorant unfortunately. She kept asking the lady if anyone ever told her her own happiness was important. her questions reveal a very ethnocentric view which I suppose someone like her having the job she has could be expected to naturally operate beyond that. She goes on to say the woman looks very scared being asked that question not considering that she was instead offended by the individualistic mentality she pushed forward. Some cultures are more of collectivists that individualistic and this is such a basic distinction anyone interested in culture ought to keep in mind. Her ignorance whether staged or not was annoying and made the show lose credibility. A shame really because she had access to resources that could have added depth to the subject.

No Subtitles

Huge amounts of this documentary series were not subtitled which means as a viewer- you're often left wondering for long periods of time thinking 'what is being said' I did watch it on Netflix but am wondering if it is subtitled in other places Just seemed really odd
