Here There Be Monsters

I saw this as part of a block of horror shorts at the Satisfied Eye International Film Festival and it was a film that wowed the packed audience. Working on multiple levels - as all good horror should - it's a perfectly constructed short with wonderful cinematography all glued together by an absolutely wonderful performance by the young lead actress. A film with much to say, it does it in style, wearing its themes on its sleeve, but with enough injections of horror to please everyone in the audience. I'm not sure what they put in the water in Australia, but at least half of the great horror films we saw this year were from the antipodes and this was no exception.

This short horror film wastes two cool things: a good monster and a good, young lead actress. There is virtually no dialogue which I think is poor filmmaking. Also, the story does not develop enough to make the end understandable. I think dialogue would actually have helped with this. As a result, this is very disappointing as it feels incomplete or unfinished when it ends.

The basic virtue - its impecable construction. Diferent themes - from the bulying to lonelinese in isolated place and the danger to the victory against menace as kick to revenge. Second - the cinematography. The being - as parts of them is more than familiar and for a Christian the reference is obvious . Not the last - the precise craft of the end. And the performance of Savannah Foran- McDaniel. Short, just impressive well craft.
