The Best Movie Soundtracks of the 90s
Image
A few weeks ago, we posted an article celebrating the ten best movie soundtracks of the eighties. The article was so well-received that we decided it needed a follow-up focusing on the nineties, so here is one spotlighting ten seminal nineties soundtracks. Now, this comes with a caveat, as honestly there were a heck of a lot more soundtracks that are pretty essential that didn’t make this list. As such, I decided to focus on ones that had more than one hit song directly identified with the movie while steering clear of score albums (that will be addressed in another article), meaning Titanic and Braveheart are off the list,...

What’s the Song in the New ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 Intro?
Image
Peacemaker is back, and John Cena’s Christopher Smith is dealing with some serious consequences from Season 1. The HBO Max series, which spun off from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, became a surprise hit thanks to its perfect blend of action, heart, and that unforgettable dancing intro set to Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It.”

Now in its second season, the show continues to follow the jingoistic anti-hero as he navigates a world that doesn’t quite see him as the hero he thinks he is. Season 2’s intro brings fresh choreography, new cast members joining the dance sequence, and introduces alternate dimension characters, while maintaining that...

After Wolf Man Flop, Blumhouse's Next Horror Movie Based on an Iconic Monster Wraps Filming
Image
Lee Cronin's The Mummy reboot is all wrapped up, just like its titular monster. The filmmaker has revealed that production has concluded on the hotly anticipated Blumhouse movie.

Cronin shared a picture of his director's chair on Instagram yesterday afternoon with the caption, "All wrapped up." While it's tough to surmise, it looks like the image was taken on the set for The Mummy, specifically the tomb where the titular monster might be found by Jack Reynor and Laia Costa's married couple, who reportedly will run afoul of supernaturally sinister forces throughout the reboot. Production on The Mummy began in Ireland and Spain in late March, meaning that the movie had a three-month shoot.

First announced in December 2024, Cronin directed the new Mummy movie from his own screenplay. The Evil Dead Rise filmmaker teased last year that...

‘Bleach’ Still Has One Arc Left to Adapt After Thousand-Year Blood War Ends
Image
Even after the Thousand-Year Blood War, Bleach’s spiritual mysteries remain unresolved because the story is far from its end. Having new visuals, strong animations, a fresh take on fight choreography, and the long-awaited moments that were brought to life on screen, the latest arc for the series has won millions of hearts around the world.

Fans who are familiar with the manga chapters remember that back in 2020, on the occasion of Bleach celebrating its 20th anniversary, the creators had launched a one-shot title, Bleach: Echoing Jaws of Hell (also known as No Breath from the Jaws of Hell). This story introduced a game-changing idea and recontextualized the entire soul ecosystem.

Echoing Jaws could be a game changer for Bleach

The one-shot story released by Bleach is set on new grounds, and a haunting fact that powerful captain-level Soul Reapers don’t pass on peacefully. Their reiatsu or soul energy...

Alan Cumming and Michael Urie Interview Each Other About Their Evolving Careers and Staying Curious | Visionaries
Image
Actors don’t build the kind of eclectic careers enjoyed by Alan Cumming and Michael Urie without leaning into the unexpected.

Audiences are as likely to see them acting on the small screen, hosting the latest glitzy awards show (Cumming had the BAFTAs this year while Urie had the GLAAD Media Awards) or lighting up stages across New York, Los Angeles and London.

“I get to do this TV show, I just did a Broadway show, I’m producing a queer theater festival. If my life continues to be varied like that, maybe not quite as varied as Alan Cumming’s career, but if I get to go from a studio to a stage to a brain trust of people coming up with ways to expand queer theater, if I’m still doing that, I think that that would be fantastic,” Urie shared in the latest episode of “Visionaries,” TheWrap...

Daredevil: Born Again Scene Stealer Joins Next Evil Dead Movie Ahead of Rumored Season 2 Return
Image
More actors have been announced for the next Evil Dead movie. Among those set to face off against the Deadites is Hunter Doohan, who wowed Marvel fans earlier this year in Daredevil: Born Again as the villainous Muse.

Deadline was the first to report that Doohan had joined the cast of the new Evil Dead movie alongwith Luciane Buchanan (The Night Agent) and Tandi Wright (Pearl). Doohan's casting comes amid rumors that Muse will return for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, despite the scene-stealing serial killer's death in the first season. However, it's not yet clear if Doohan will be back in the role, as it's possible that a different character could take over the serial killer's mantle in the new season.

Character details remain under wraps at this time for all confirmed actors. The three actors join the previously announced Souheila Yacoub (Dune: Part Two) in the new Evil Dead movie,...

WWE superstar Becky Lynch is branching out into acting, and is set to star on the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series. But before she boldly goes where no The Man has gone before, she talked to Variety about her history with the franchise, and her favorite Star Trek star. Those who know that Lynch (real name Rebecca Quin) hails from Ireland may have been able to guess that her fave is countryman Colm Meaney, who starred as Miles O'Brien, "the most important person in Starfleet history," on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine.

Lynch, who recently returned to the squared circle at last month's WrestleMania, discussed her stint on the show, but couldn't reveal much: "I’m on the bridge crew, and filming on the bridge, it was one of the most amazing sets I’ve ever been on." And while she wasn't a hardcore Trekkie,...

Venamoris (Paula & Dave Lombardo) Announce New Album, Unveil Scorpions Cover “Animal Magnetism” Featuring Gary Holt: Stream
Image
Venamoris, the duo of ex-Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo and his wife Paula, have announced their sophomore album, To Cross or To Burn, out February 28th via Ipecac Recordings.

The group also offered up a new single, a cover rendition of Scorpions’ “Animal Magnetism” that re-invents the song as a brooding industrial/darkwave piece. The lyrics and vocals (handled by Paula) are the only immediately recognizable elements from the original, as the Lombardos morph the arrangement with synth stabs and droning guitars. Dave’s West Coast thrash cohort Gary Holt also makes an appearance near the halfway point, ripping through a solo.

“The first rock concert I ever attended was on May 25, 1980, with Scorpions opening for Ted Nugent’s ‘Scream Dream’ tour,” recalled Dave in a press release. “We (Slayer) had covered a couple Scorpions songs in the early years but I never would have thought of re-imagining one of their songs at that time.

How Diddy's Artists Are Being Linked To His Scandal
Image
Sean "Diddy" Combs' recent arrest has dragged other celebrities into his scandal, including Jay-Z and Beyonc, who just had their lawyer legally remove Jaguar Wright's serious allegations about them in Piers Morgan Uncensored. A-listers are reportedly fearing for their reputation ahead of the "Diddy List" release.

But many Hollywood stars have been warning people about the music mogul, long before his alleged crimes were exposed. Some of them are his former protgs who claim to have seen disturbing things in his "dangerous" freak-off parties. Here's a list of musicians Diddy has mentored and their ties to his case.

Usher

Usher was only 14 years old when he moved in with Diddy in 1994. In a 2016 interview with Howard Stern, the "Burn" performer said he "went there to see the lifestyle," but didn't know if he could even "indulge and understand" the "pretty wild" things he saw at that time.

Dark Magic Takes Hold in Harv Frost’s Giallo-Inspired The Last Dinner Party Film ‘Prelude to Ecstasy’
Image
Made up of four separate The Last Dinner Party music videos Harv Frost’s Giallo-inspired short Prelude to Ecstasy is the culmination of the band’s first chapter. The film tells the story of a mysterious dance school that holds a power which could both enhance and destroy those who embrace it, an allegory of sorts for how the band views the music industry at large. The visual language across the board feels very The Last Dinner Party. It’s decadent, stylish, and captured on 16mm, which gives it a mysterious, tactile texture akin to staples of the horror genre like Argento’s Suspiria or Roeg’s Don’t Look Now. With the film unsurprisingly racking up views online, Dn caught up with Frost to learn about her vision for the film, the process of conceiving the film’s overarching narrative and embracing the band’s creative spontaneity.

We Don’t Need a Harry Potter TV Series
Image
There are classic films, and then there are classic films — the kind that define a generation, create cultural moments, and deserve to be left untouched.

The Harry Potter franchise is one of those.

When rumors of a potential Harry Potter TV series first surfaced, they were irritating. When HBO got the green light in 2023, it was downright maddening.

(Warner Bros. Pictures/Screenshot)

And now? With casting calls for a new Harry, Hermione, and Ron, it’s beyond outrageous.

I foolishly thought this idea would vanish like a forgotten spell in some dusty HBO boardroom.

But no — HBO has doubled down, determined to replace one of the most iconic casts of the last two decades. Can anyone say dunderheads?

Would Fairy Tail's Natsu Survive in These Anime Universes?
Image
It's inevitable that by the endgame of any shonen action anime series, such as Fairy Tail, the protagonist will reach the apex of the power system. Natsu Dragneel, the Fire Dragon Slayer, became powerful enough to challenge even the greatest villains in Fairy Tail, especially with the power of friendship to guide him along. So, the best way to challenge characters like Natsu Dragneel is to send them into other shonen and seinen action universes to see how they fare against new foes and new fighting styles.

Natsu Dragneel is a warrior of fire, able to generate powerful flame attacks with his fists, kicks, and even his mouth. He is a brute-force shonen fighter and a total himbo, relying more on his strength and courage than any trickery and advanced tactics to take on his fellow wizards and even proper dragons. Natsu is equally adept at martial arts and ranged fire attacks,...

The Crow 1994 Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
The soundtrack to Alex Proyas' gothic superhero film The Crow is essential to the dark mood of this 90s cult classic. Starring Brandon Lee in his final role as Eric Draven, the film follows the story of a rock musician brought back from the dead to avenge the murder of his fiance. Music is integral to Draven's character and also featured heavily in the comics on which The Crow movie was based.

The inclusion of songs by 80s post-punk groups the Cure and Joy Division is particularly notable. Writer James O'Barr devoted a whole page of the comic to the lyrics of "The Hanging Garden", while the chapters "Atmosphere" and "Atrocity Exhibition" took their titles from Joy Division songs. Just as the soundtrack to The Crow 2024 features original music by FKA twigs, the 1994 version included songs written specifically for the film, such as The Cures Burn. The contribution of such...

Venice Review: Wolfs Makes Little of a Reunion for George Clooney and Brad Pitt
Image
It’s been nine years since Jon Watts made a feature film that wasn’t about Spider-Man––long enough that for the past three years his MCU entries have outnumbered all others. The once-indie director of Clown and Cop Car was poached for the franchise after cranking out those two features in back-to-back years, his directorial voice put on the backburner to develop Tom Holland’s hero. Walking into Wolfs, one can’t help wondering what Watts’ taste and style has become after a trilogy of cookie-cutter superhero blockbusters fitting so cleanly and unfussily into the Marvel machine.

With George Clooney and Brad Pitt at the helm as lead producers and actors, there’s a well-founded hope that whatever Watts pitched on the page must have been promising enough to reunite one of Hollywood’s most beloved duos for the first time in 16 years. Thus it’s nothing short of...

That '90s Show Repeats Eric Forman's Worst Burn In All 8 Seasons Of That '70s Show
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for That '90s Show part 3!

Leia pays tribute to Eric's memorable burn about Laurie having a tail in That '70s Show. Michael Kelso started the concept of yelling "Burn!" in the show, passed on to his kids. Big secrets exposed in That '70s Show were often ignored, like Laurie's tail reveal in season 2.

In That 90s Show part 3, Leia Forman unintentionally pays tribute to one of the worst burns that Eric ever said in That 70s Show, which included a shocking character reveal. The concept of yelling Burn! whenever one of the teens lodges a brutal insult at the others was started by Michael Kelso in That 70s Show, and has been carried on by both his kids, Betsy and Jay, in That 90s Show. Of course, these types of insults arent confined to the Kelso family tree, as the Forman and Runck families also...

The Crow 2024 Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
The Crow 2024's soundtrack sets a gothic mood with new songs, including FKA twigs and opera pieces. Notable songs like "Burn" and "Dead Souls" from the original movie are excluded for a fresh take. Each song in The Crow 2024 can be found online individually, but the full soundtrack is not yet released.

2024's The Crow soundtrack is filled with music and songs to help set the gothic mood of the comic book reimagining. With Bill Skarsgrd in the lead role as Eric Draven, The Crow's cast hinted at how music could be an integral part of the new adaptation. Singer FKA twigs is featured as the female lead of the movie, playing Eric's love interest, Shelly. While she is involved in the film as an actress first and foremost, the decision to include a prominent music star brought along some expectations that The Crow's soundtrack could...

Tite Kubo on His Favorite Female Bleach Character: “I choose my favorite female characters based solely on whether they have big br**sts or not”
Image
Having a character list as big as Bleach makes it difficult for manga creators to select their favorite character based on basic aspects. However, this is not the case for Kubo. The manga creator has been quite straightforward and vocal in his choice to select his favorite characters, irrespective of their gender or personality.

Bleach Anime | Studio Pierrot

Generally, the preference is based on the character’s personality, his powers, his strength, his importance in the story, and other such aspects. But Kubo’s preference is based on entirely different things, especially in the case of female characters. The manga creator once revealed that he chose his favorite female characters based on their bust size.

He even pointed out that, as of yet, his current favorite female character is Noel Niihashi, the protagonist of Burn the Witch, which is a Bleach spinoff series based in the same universe as Bleach.
