Sally Trailer: Sundance Winner Captures the Life of Boundary-Breaking Astronaut
Image
Winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Feature Film Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Cristina Costantini’s Sally captures the life of Sally Ride, the first American woman to travel to space, and the struggles she endured both in public and private. Now set for a June 16 premiere on National Geographic and June 17 streaming debut on Disney+ and Hulu, National Geographic Documentary Films has released the first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: “Sally Ride became the first American woman to blast off into space, but beneath her unflappable composure, she carried a secret. Revealing the romance and sacrifices of their 27 years together, Sally’s life partner, Tam O’Shaughnessy, tells the full story of this complicated and iconic astronaut for the first time. The film features interviews with tennis champion and close friend to Ride, Billie Jean King; Sally’s sister, Bear Ride; and mother, Carol Joyce Ride,...

This 28-Year-Old Disney Box Office Bomb is a Much Better Remake Than Fans Remember

Quick LinksDisney's RocketMan Is a Partial Remake of 1967’s The Reluctant AstronautHarland Williams Turned Down Disney's George of the Jungle Before Staring in RocketManDisney's RocketMan Was Released in the Wrong Time

1997's RocketMan starring comedian Harland Williams was a bit of a wild card. It was produced at a time in the 1990s when Disney was remaking and making its classics (and even some from other studios). 101 Dalmatians (1996) gave birth to not one, but two more films in the franchise and introduced the world to Glenn Close's take on Cruella de Vil. 1997 would also see a successful remake of Flubber starring Robin Williams. Not to mention the ever-popular remake of The Parent Trap that would follow in 1998, showcasing the talents of a young Lindsay Lohan.

However, RocketMan fell sadly short of some of its Disney counterparts. Despite the meticulous nature of its star and cowriter, the script floundered...

We Bury the Dead SXSW Review — Daisy Ridley Is Tremendous in a Somber Zombie Movie
Image
Some subgenres of horror are so well-worn that it’s hard to find genuinely original new films in that style. We Bury the Dead offers an unconventional approach to the zombie genre, emphasizing emotion over straightforward scares, resulting in a film that is much more affecting and dread-inducing than the typical flick about the undead.

We Bury the Dead Review

The film is set in Tasmania after the accidental detonation of a weapon that kills everyone on the island, as a woman volunteers to retrieve the bodies of the dead, hoping to find her missing husband, soon discovering that many of the dead are exhibiting signs of life. Although Zak Hilditch’s script hits many familiar beats and tropes, it explores them with an uncommon emotion and vulnerability that elevates it beyond this familiarity.

Ash SXSW Review — Flying Lotus Brings Visual Style and Little Else to Aaron Paul/Eiza González Sci-Fi Horror
Image
Flying Lotus may be best known as a musician, winning a Grammy for producing Kendrick Lamar’s masterpiece To Pimp a Butterfly, but in the cinephile community, he is known as one of horror cinema’s most exciting sickos. His sophomore feature, Ash, offers every ounce of aesthetic style that fans will expect, but it is squandered on an uninteresting and derivative script.

Ash Review

Ash follows a woman who wakes up as the sole survivor of a vicious attack on her interplanetary mission as she sets out on a mission to discover what happened to the rest of her crew. It’s an unholy conglomeration of every sci-fi horror trope you can think of, from Alien to The Thing, resulting in a film that is very difficult to get invested in.

Because Ash is so generic, it ends up dragging despite a runtime that is just over 90 minutes. It...

‘The Astronaut’ SXSW Review – Psychological Sci-Fi Thriller Fails to Stick Its Landing
Image
The premise for writer/director Jess Varley‘s feature debut instantly intrigues; the mostly single-location sci-fi thriller stars Kate Mara as The Astronaut who may have brought something back with her upon re-entering Earth’s orbit. It’s a concept that Varley mines for psychological tension, playing on the ambiguity of whether the threat is internal or external to drive up the paranoia and fear. Varley’s eventual answer to this looming question audaciously delivers something new, though it struggles to stick its landing.

The Astronaut opens with the rescue of Captain Sam Walker (Mara) at sea, found unconscious in her pod with her helmet’s faceplate shattered and a baseball-sized hole in the side of the spacecraft. Combined with unsettling bruising on her hand, routine re-entry quarantine comes with extra surveillance and concern from her military handlers. Luckily, her father, General William Harris (Laurence Fishburne), works high up in...

Demi Moore’s Heartbreaking Reaction After She Loses the Oscar to 25-Year-Old Mikey Madison Will Make You Emotional
Image
Oscar night is a time when dreams come true, but for some, it also brings a wave of heartache. The 97th Academy Awards were full of surprises, but nothing quite shook the room like Demi Moore’s unexpected loss to Mikey Madison. We couldn’t help but feel for The Substance star, 62, as she sat there, waiting for her name to be called, only to hear a name she hadn’t prepared for.

As a fan of her work, we could see how hard it hit her, and her one-word response— “nice”—said it all.

You could almost feel the weight of the moment in that chilly nod. It’s moments like these that remind us how much these actors pour into their roles. This year’s Oscar night was more than just about a statue—it was about perseverance,...

In September, Griff took the stage at New York’s Terminal 5 to a sold-out audience on her Vertigo world tour. The space holds a capacity of nearly 3,000 people, but for the duration of her set, the British singer-songwriter and producer transformed the venue into a room that matched the energy of a show at Madison Square Garden. Before she emerged with thundering live renditions of songs from her debut album, Griff joined Rolling Stone backstage for an episode of The Green Room to discuss the making of Vertigo, carving out...

Tears for Fears are back with “Astronaut,” the latest new song off their upcoming live album Songs for a Nervous Planet.

“Astronaut” features some sublime, reverb-ridden falsetto from Roland Orzabal and takes a majestic, glammy turn in the chorus. “I wanna be an astronaut,” Orzabal sings with harmonies surrounding him. “Emotionally it’s about this guy who doesn’t feel he belongs here and wants to be an astronaut floating out into space… a lot of people identify with the emotion of that song, that sense of alienation,” said the band’s Curt Smith in a statement.

The Astronaut first look image shows Kate Mara in sci-fi thriller
Image
Almost exactly one year ago, it was announced that Emma Roberts (Abandoned) and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) had signed on to star in the sci-fi thriller The Astronaut, which would mark the solo feature writing and directing debut of Jess Varley, who previously contributed a segment to the anthology film Phobias. The Astronaut has since made it way through production, but not with Roberts in the lead. Roberts had to drop out of the project and was replaced by Kate Mara (Class of ’09). Now a first look image that shows Mara as the title character has made its way online, and you can check it out at the bottom of this article.

The screenplay Varley wrote has the following synopsis: When astronaut Sam Walker (Mara) returns from her first space mission, she’s found miraculously alive in a punctured capsule floating deep off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. General...

Why ‘This Is Not Sweden’ is a Game-Changer For Catalonia
Image
“The Catalan industry is healthy in the sense that we’re producing a lot,” says producer-director David Matamoros.

Led by Escac, “Society of the Snow” director J.A. Bayona’s alma mater, its film schools turn out top notch novel directors and technicians.

Produced by Barcelona’s Arcadia Motion Pictures, “Robot Dreams” has just scored an Academy Award nomination for best animated feature, while proving one of Neon’s first U.S. pick-ups announced at Cannes.

In 2022, the last year for which records are available, international shoots generated more investment in Catalonia, €77.8 million ($85.6 million), apart from the Canary Islands (€112.9 million: $120.8 million).

Catalonia’s government is also aiming for larger TV industry overseas impact, while firing up 3Cat, Catalonia’s public broadcaster, as an international player.

From 2023, every year, producers of up to five higher-end Catalan-language series, budgeted at over €4 million ($4.3 million), can receive a grant of €1.5 million ($1.6 million). 3Cat can add...

Adam Sandler’s Next Movie Pays Off A 14-Year-Old Joke
Image
Adam Sandler's next movie, Spaceman, pays off a joke from his previous film Funny People, giving fans something to look forward to. Spaceman's astronaut role for Adam Sandler comes 14 years after Funny People teased a fake space movie called Astro-Not. Spaceman diverges from the comedic tone of the fake movie in Funny People and takes on a more dramatic and potentially award-worthy storyline.

Adam Sandler's next movie is highly anticipated by longtime fans of the comedian, but it also pays off a joke from one of his previous movies. Sandler remains incredibly busy as an actor and comedian, starring in a variety of Netflix movies and reminding viewers of his dramatic range with occasionally different roles. The next movie that Adam Sandler will star in is Spaceman, an astronaut movie from Chernobyl director Johan Renck that also includes Paul Dano and Carey Mulligan in major roles. It is thought...

Oscar Isaac of the third Star Wars trilogy is in talks to suit up as Moon Knight for Disney+‘s upcoming Marvel hero series, our sister site Variety reports.

“In talks” may be the operative words, though. As recently as a few days ago, both Daveed Diggs (Snowpiercer) and Nick Kroll (The League) were rumored to be in contention for the plum gig. Turns Out Hunter Hayes Hid Some Truth From The Masked Singer

The Astronaut on The Masked Singer told a little lie to get on the show. Warning, spoilers follow! On the Wednesday, April 29 episode of The Masked Singer, the Astronaut was revealed to be none other than Hunter Hayes. To get on the show, Hayes said he wasn't entirely honest and hid some things from producers. "In one of the questionnaires when you sign up, they ask you if you're claustrophobic. I've had both experiences. I've had experiences where I have zero problem being in a confined space, but I've also had, like, mild panic attacks being in confined spaces. ‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: The Banana is …
Mask Singer (États-Unis) (2019)
The April 22 episode of the “The Masked Singer” is the second of the two quarter-finals of season 3. Facing off against each other this week are the Banana, Frog, Kitty and Rhino. The first quarter-final that aired on April 8 saw three of the other remaining contenders — Astronaut, Night Angel and Turtle — move ahead in the competition after the Rhino was revealed to be model Jordyn Woods.

In between these two episodes, a special sing-along version of the show screened on April 15. In that episode, we got a new clue about the Banana who says he he can hardly see in his costume. But, as he readily admits, a little danger is a small price to pay for doing what he loves the most — being the life of the party and entertaining an audience. His first flashback performance was “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, which the Banana performed as part of...

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: The Astronaut is …
Mask Singer (États-Unis) (2019)
The April 15 episode of “The Masked Singer” is a special sing-along edition. It showcases past performances by the contenders for the Golden Mask. The lyrics of each song will be seen on screen, allowing viewers to join in. Three of the lucky seven celebrities still in the competition — the Astronaut, Night Angel and Turtle — were featured on the first quarter-final on April 8 (the other four compete in quarterfinal 2 on April 22).

Of this trio, the Astronaut was the one at risk of being eliminated when he ended up in a Smackdown with the Kangaroo; she lost and was revealed to be Jordyn Woods. The Astronaut won over the four judges with his version of “Bye Bye Bye” by Nsync. Earlier in the show, he had tackled a hit from another teen idol, “If I Can’t Have You” by Shawn Mendes.

While the Astronaut has a great voice, he struggled to...

“Definitely, this is the star of a lot,” said Woods, whose previous TV credits include “Life of Kylie.” “I think that now I don’t have a choice. The people want the album.”

As the Kangaroo, Woods performed “No Air,” by Jordin Sparks, on Wednesday night’s episode. In previous weeks she performed “Not Ready to Make Nice,” by Dixie Chicks; “Diamonds,” by Rihanna; “You Know I’m No Good,” by Amy Winehouse”; and “Dancing on My Own” by Robyn.

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: The Turtle is …
Mask Singer (États-Unis) (2019)
We’re had to wait seven weeks to see the return of one of the best vocalists on season 3 of the “The Masked Singer”: the Turtle. He, along with the other Top 3 in Group A — the Kangaroo and the White Tiger — made the cut back on February 12. On the special two-hour edition of “The Masked Singer” on April 1, they competed along with the best of Group B and Group C.

Each is hoping to win enough votes from the studio audience to stay in the competition and make it to the quarter-finals. Of this Super 9, the Turtle is the one who has most confounded the four judges. We are sure that they are wrong with their guesses that the Turtle is either Jenny McCarthy‘s husband Donnie Wahlberg or his New Kids on the Block bandmate Joey McIntyre.

We’ve rewatched all three of his performance and don’t...

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: The Rhino is …
Mask Singer (États-Unis) (2019)
Last time we saw the Rhino on “The Masked Singer” he had just found out he numbered among the top 3 in Group C. On the April 1 episode, he returned, along with Astronaut and Night Angel, to face off against the best of both Groups A and B.

This Super 9 are fighting for their places in the quarter-finals. To do so, they must win over both the studio audience and four judges. Of the remaining contestants, the Rhino is the one who has shown the most improvement.

He started off shakily with his version of the John Hiatt hit “Have a Little Faith in Me.” He did a whole lot better with “Nice to Meet Ya” by Niall Horan. And he proved to be quite the showman with his take on “Tracks of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles.

We’ve watched all those performances again as well as the three clues videos.

Hulu in November: Here’s Everything Coming and Going
Fall is upon us, and so is Hulu’s list of every title coming and going from the streaming service in November.

Among the list of arriving titles is a new episode of Hulu’s original monthly anthology series, “Into the Dark.” November’s episode is called “Pilgrim,” and claims to be inspired by true events — in which a woman invites a bunch of Pilgrim re-enactors over for Thanksgiving dinner. But things get spooky when the “actors” refuse to break character.

Other new arrivals include Season 5 of “You’re the Worst,” described as a modern look at love, the complete first seasons of “Dollface,” about a young woman re-entering the world of women, “The Accident,” which begins with a deadly explosion at a construction site, and “Love Island: Australia,” an answer to the U.K. and U.S. versions of the beloved reality dating show.

Richard Dreyfuss
Film Review: ‘Astronaut’
Richard Dreyfuss
The recently widowed retiree Angus (Richard Dreyfuss) might be in the gutter, but he looks at the stars. Indeed, despite his flailing health and tricky family situation, the hopeful septuagenarian lives by that famous Oscar Wilde quote in “Astronaut,” actress-turned-filmmaker Shelagh McLeod’s caringly observed debut feature. It’s a modestly scoped, visually amateurish film, but limited resources don’t stop McLeod from reaching for galactic emotions with the story of a fantasist chasing his lifelong dream of becoming an astronaut. In the end, only a fraction of McLeod’s ambitions sticks a landing. But “Astronaut” stays afloat with sweetness, thanks to a measured performance from Dreyfuss.

And that might just be intriguing enough for Dreyfuss loyalists, as well as aging viewers starved for original stories centered on their own demographics — after all, it’s not only the below-60 crowd that deserves to have an outer space adventure. But even...

Richard Dreyfuss Gets A Space Worthy Showcase With “Astronaut”
How long has it been since Richard Dreyfuss got a proper starring vehicle? No matter what answer you give, the most apt one is this: too long. Well, this weekend, that changes with the release of Astronaut, an independent drama about a man hoping to become an astronaut late in life. Dreyfuss elevates the material, which could get a bit of an extra push considering the recent anniversary of man walking on the moon. Renewed interest in Nasa and space exploration might help put a bit of a bonus spotlight on this one, though Dreyfuss himself is enough of a selling point. Nothing too special is happening here, but it’s a small scale movie that does just enough right in order to warrant a recommendation. The film is a light drama about an older gentleman finally trying to achieve a lifelong dream. Angus (Dreyfuss) was once a highly respected civil engineer,...

Trailer for Sweet Drama Astronaut Sees Richard Dreyfuss Go to Space
Here’s a trailer for the film Astronaut, about an elderly man played by Richard Dreyfuss who is fascinated with space. When a rich man puts together a lottery for someone to be able to take a trip into space, the man knows he has to be the one to go. It’s like an old-man version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, in space. It looks like it may border on cheesy, but it will be a nice family friendly film, and it’s always nice to see Richard Dreyfuss.

Here’s the synopsis:

Angus, a lonely widower, has his long-extinguished dream to become an astronaut reignited when a national competition is announced. The prize? One ticket for a trip to space! Way over the age-limit, Angus alters his birthdate so he can enter the competition. Against all odds, but with help coming from his dysfunctional family, he must battle against preconceptions,...

Richard Dreyfuss Goes to Space in Trailer for Lonely Drama 'Astronaut'
"You know I have to do this..." "I know you do." Quiver Distribution has unveiled the official trailer for an odd little indie drama titled Astronaut, the feature directorial debut of Canadian-British actress Shelagh McLeod. The concept for this sounds like it could be a super goofy comedy, but it's really a straightforward drama - and it looks very, very cheesy. Richard Dreyfuss stars as a lonely widower who battles his family, ill health, and time, in order to win a competition for a golden ticket to visit space. The cast includes Lyriq Bent, Krista Bridges, Graham Greene, Richie Lawrence, and Colm Feore as the Elon Musk-esque billionaire who offers the once-in-a-lifetime trip to space. I'm stunned this film even exists, seems so bland. Here's the first official trailer (+ two posters) for Shelagh McLeod's Astronaut, direct from YouTube: Angus (Dreyfuss), a lonely widower, has his long-extinguished dream to...
