Paranormal investigator Felix Fojas arrives in a sleepy Midwest town to investigate the mysterious loss of his old lover, Amanda, and reconcile sins of the past. He discovers she fell victim to the Batibat, an ancient evil that followed her home from the Philippines. Now Felix must battle the forces of evil and unravel the mystery of the Batibat in order to save Amanda's daughter, Sarah, from its hellish grip.

Reasonably Entertaining

Mid-budget film that, while it may not deliver any jolts or scares, still manages to be fairly enjoyable. The cast does well with their roles, though the script could have been better and given the viewers more insight into the characters and their motivations. There were some dangling story threads also, and the Exorcist-like ending felt a bit of a letdown. I enjoyed the practical creature effects, and at 91 minutes, the movie never feels draggy or slow. Go in with the expectation that you're going to get some superficial fun involving demonic goings on and you should find it an amiable way to kill an hour and a half.

Lame Syfy infused Lifetime movie.

Not scary nor well plotted. Acting is mediocre and plotting is basic, in a boring way. Tired interpersonal conflicts of marriage, infidelity, and faith. Characters are crudely one dimensional. Weak film trying to cash in one trend of spooky movies, possession films, and good versus evil studies. And it does it poorly. Nothing here to rent. If you like these types of films, watch if for free only.

Everyone's doing the batibat! I remember that from Sesame Street. The Count... I'm not sure if that's where the title comes from, but... Okay

Soooooooooooo boring

I left the room while it was playing to do dishes, didnt even bother to pause it. Stopped it a half hour before the end. Couldn't care less about anyone or anything. Hard pass.

Better than most low budget movies

IMO, Evil Takes Root deserves more than current score of 4.4/10. It stands out among low budget horror movies despite lacking in scary moments. It has decent plot, pacing and ending that makes sense in its universe. Characters don't frustrate me with their stupidity either. At least, it has a proper story unlike recent trend of films that focus more on themes, art and delivering a 'message'. I would rather watch this than Relic (2020).
