One Too Many

Overall, the series was good. But Episode 7 should have been the conclusion. The last episode could have tied everything together in 15 minutes. They spread it out over 48 minutes. I will say, the acting throughout the entire series was excellent.

Disappointed with the conclusion.

I've stopped having any sort of expectations for final episodes, particularly six and eight part dramas. The Widow follows in the footsteps of so many, the previous episode was superb, this final part was average.

So much of it had been revealed and explained, and it felt a little as if they'd stretched it out beyond belief. Even the Adidja story was just somehow added in. Who was Owen? He served zero purpose, other then passing. The Nigel reference was a bit daft.

The timeframe at the end was muddled, and the scenes in the market pushed the need to suspend belief.

Nice Series Closes Out

The big reveal was earlier so this one is tying up loose ends. Through it all KB gives a top notch believable character, back story and all. The Charles Dance Martin role is slightly odd, he ends up just saying "Georgia " a lot in an exasperated tone, thought he would do more action himself as a retired MI type. The Congo mining story as a plot has been touched on by Le Carre and others and works well as a mystery intrigue tale to tell. And the General's path was a good add on.

Alex Kingston and Gareth David-Lloyd are both from the Doctor Who universe. Kingston from Doctor Who and David-Lloyd from the spin-off Torchwood.

Gaffes
Seat belts and windows are a constant source of continuity errors in this production. Windows in numerous scenes that are up when filmed from the opposite side of the vehicle (showing visible dust and dirt) are magically down when filming a closeup through the window of the person on that side, complete with hair now blowing in the breeze. Similarly, seat belts alternate between worn and unworn from one shot to the next, such as in the closing scene when Nigel is spotted from the roadway.

General Azikiwe: My uncle told me a story once when I was young. The story he told me was about a farmer's donkey. This donkey fell down a deep well. The donkey sat at the bottom of the well squealing and crying for hours. The farmer looked down at him, and he decided that the animal was old, and that he needed to cover the well, anyway. Well, they began to shovel dirt down into the well, onto the donkey. More and more dirt. But then he stopped. After shoveling some more dirt, he'd looked down to see something amazing. All the dirt they had thrown upon the creature's back had fallen to the side when he shook it off his back. Slowly but surely, the dirt began to build, until the donkey got higher and higher, until eventually, he could walk out of that well.

Ariel Helgason: And why did your uncle tell you this story?
General Azikiwe: To make me feel better.

General Azikiwe: The donkey could leave that well, so it could once more carry a load on its back. Free, so it could be a slave once more.
