I recently bought this documentary on Amazon Prime, being a slightly younger fan at the time of VIPCO's much-maligned DVD era, having been born in the late 80s. It proved to be highly engaging and compulsive viewing. Given the significance and importance of VIPCO's impact on the UK video market in that decade, I feel this is a must-watch for British horror fans young and old, particularly those interested in the whole "Video Nasty" controversy.
"The Untold Story" kept me entertained and riveted to the screen for its duration, which is really all you can reasonably ask for from a piece of work like this, hence my rating of 10 stars. Hearing from the label's brutally honest founder Michael Lee baring his soul and telling all was particularly delightful, and provided a real insight into the fascinating and often-controversial behind-the-scenes operations of the company.
The story itself is so interesting that the lack of clips from the films themselves becomes almost irrelevant.
I recommend this doc to all horror fans, but especially to those who vividly remember the old Vipco videos and/or DVDs growing up in the U.K. and who have a soft spot in their heart for this most infamous and polarising of horror video labels.
