Avis à la une
This is one of those movies that had everything to be very good, but ends up disappointing the viewer. The beginning and introduction of the plot is very efficient and exciting, leaving the audience wanting to find out what's going to happen. However, when the process of concluding the plot begins, the movie leaves a lot to be desired. Several inconsistencies and unexplained things are left behind. It's not a plot hole that leaves the audience wanting more, but a significant inconsistency that ends up damaging the viewer's experience. Some say that the film was intended as a critique of religious fanaticism, since there is nothing supernatural about it, which doesn't usually happen in films that have some contact with entities and religion. Others refer to the plot as a psychological horror, considering the protagonist's traumas, her mental conflicts and the perversity (intentional or not) of Tin and Tina. In addition, the movie is very suspenseful with some bloody and agonizing scenes that will make anyone bite their nails. In short, the movie ends in a very superficial way, leaving several explanations along the way that, like it or not, are missed by those who watch it.
Why is it scoring so low? Probably because people these days don't like low-budget, slow-burn indies? I couldn't say.
This is definitely a low-budge, slow-burn indie.
It's not clear if it has a lot say and you have to mine for it or if it's just what it seems.
I really liked it. I was invested and it kept my attention.
It didn't swing for the fences the way it could have but there were some great scenes of dramatic tension and high stakes.
I mean, yeah, there are flaws. But name a movie without flaws.
I could point to some things that would have really kicked things up a notch but that's not what this movie wants to be.
I thought everyone did a great job with the material.
Definitely worth a watch.
The one thing I did find most distracting was the mom's physical disability which varies greatly from scene to scene and didn't really add anything to the plot.

The low ratings and complaints regarding this stunning Gothic Horror Story, is unfair.
Sadly, I watched a 'dubbed' version which was a terrible idea.
That aside: The story starts quite depressing: death, loss and emotional trauma.
Enter the kids: innocent to the point of evil! Sweetly done, showing the absolute madness which can boil from imaginative, yet misguided minds.
The story, I think is simple, probably why so many find it 'too little', however, I think it is a rather pleasant Gothic experience.
The visuals are authentic, the setup for 1981, was convincing.
I can also see why some might find it annoying (the dubbed version voicing is... entertainingly off). The constant melancholy of the lead lady, will drive most to annoyance, but it is part of the personal drama, which ends in the final scene: perfectly.
I would only recommend to those who enjoy a bit of Gothic mystery and madness.

No pun intended - taking things literally (verbatim or whatever you want to call it) is not always the right way to go about things. Trying to replace one hole with ... well trying to fill it ... can work, but it can also backfire.
Now having adopted two kids like that ... let's say they do not seem to leave an impression that would make me want to keep having them around. And that makes everything that goes on ... quite harrowing. It feels like the adults seem unable to understand that .. maybe they are in over their head ... on the other hand, maybe I am wrong and maybe the movie proves that too (?) ... well you'll be the judge if you dare to watch this through ... it is quite the ordeal to watch in my humble opinion.

And also, this is not horror. It's just cultish, obsessive religion. Not worth watching honestly.
Without giving spoilers, the characters are annoying. The decision to simply adopt those pretty big kids from a convent without getting to know them first, dumb. The movie can be sooo slow at times. The stuff happening towards the end of the movie has so much filler it's unbelievably annoying. I had to keep skipping because I did not muster the patience for it. And finally the ending is completely "wtf?".
No substance. Just a whole bunch of religious bible passages spewed and actions justified by them. The parents find the behaviors of the kids completely normal apparently since they keep finding excuses for them. Red flags flying furiously all around the screen but nah they just a little weird and doing kid stuff. Honestly it barely was a quarter into the movie and I was fed up with the parents. Such unpleasant characters. Not rooting for them at all.
The two kid actors are cute tho. About one of the only positives.

- AnecdotesThe albino siblings are named Tin and Tina after St. Augustine (San Agustín in Spanish; 354-430 AD). He was a writer, theologian and philosopher who after he was turned into Christianity worked as Bishop of Hipona, Argel (North Africa). He is considered as father of the Western Church and in 1295 Pope Bonifacius VIII named him Doctor of the Church by their extensive work in life and writings about faith and religion.
