Alice Lowe in Timestalker (2024)

Nice idea

Based on an interesting and fun premise, the idea of love/infatuation transcending time and multiple lives, this movie is enjoyable and benefits from some good performances. It is let down by its lack of budget and often looks and feels like a film. The decision to set the latter part in New York seems a strange one as the scenery never looks or feels like New York and ends up being a bit jarring.

Alice Lowe gives a strong performance as the lead character trying to understand and navigate the memories of multiple lives and her obsession with a man who never seems to have any idea who she is.

If you enjoyed Lowe's previous movies, Sightseers and Prevenge, you'll enjoy this.

Time for a laugh

Timestalker 2024 written, directed and starring Alice Lowe.

That's Alice Lowe of Sightseers fame, in which Lowe is the muse and forces her boyfriend to do ghastly acts. Sightseers is one of my favourite films of all time. Lowe is also the writer and star of Prevenge , the gory and funny film about the unborn baby of Lowe's taking over the host and compelling her to do ghastly acts.

So I think we know what to expect? Or do we?

The film has been pushed by a plethora of free tickets, so I hope it isn't so bad that the free tickets are the only way to get bums on seats.

Any way back to the film ... there was a lovely introduction by Alice herself, letting us all know that we could have a laugh if we wanted. Although the laughter wasn't compulsory she advised.

The premise of the film is Lowe's quest for her one true love over time, alas her love is unrequited. Lowe coming to an ultimately end before her bequeathed was often aware.

Jumping through the centuries, the 80s being the funniest with an Adam Ant lookalike being the object for Alice's affection. The actors throw a few good dance moves, name check to Propaganda's Duel sounding great over the cinemas sound system.

There's some funny moments, but overall it's a bit disjointed and might work better as a tv series, featuring the time stalking over more detailed half hour segments.

That said it does come across a bit like Highlander in its time travelling across time periods.

Oh I forgot to say I did laugh a couple of times, initially after the first ghastly death, but it did peter out after that .

Sorry Alice

Timestalker

Alice Lowe did virtually everything in this quirky drama about the immortal "Agnes" who travels through time desperate to reunite with an highwayman (Aneurin Bernard) who robbed her sometime in the 17th century. Snag is - every time she manages to engineer a scenario when they can be together, she ends up dead! We reset, and moving steadily through time we encounter her in different guises and him likewise evolving, ultimately into a jaded rock star. Along the way, she is guided by the omnipresent "Scipio" (Jacob Anderson) who plays a role similar to one of Shakespeare's fools, by her maid/best pal "Meg" (Tanya Reynolds) and slightly bonkers husband (Nick Frost) as loads of daft adventures ensue. It's a sort of hybrid of Peter Greenaway meets Terry Gilliam this, with shades of "Monty Python" as the humour has a slapstick goriness to it that starts off quite funny but all too quickly runs out of steam. Indeed, this really is the problem with this, It's more of a short story that's been drawn out to fill ninety minutes. Once the point has been made and the joke established, it seems content just to shift the timeline and then tell us a similar story all over again. I did like the premiss, and there's no doubt that Lowe does have some good comedy timing at the start as her hate-hate rapport with her rakish husband is demonstrated, but Bernard was always more about his smile than his skill and sadly the whole thing just faded away. Zach Wyatt is quite entertaining as the dubious tarot reader but in the end it's too close to a rather weak farce for me.

What If Reincarnation Is Real?

Agnes (Alice Lowe) has lived many lives, in 1680s Scotland, in 1790s England, in 1840s Britain, in 1980s New York, and more. And in every life, she meets the one man (Aneurin Barnard) whom she is destined to be with - but just as they are meeting, something dreadful happens and she dies. Until she meets him again in the next life, that is....

Alice Lowe wrote, directed and stars in this film, which is quite funny and which has lovely supporting characters played by Jacob Anderson, Nick Frost and Tanya Reynolds, who like Agnes all have just one name throughout the film (unlike the love of her life who goes by different names in each incarnation). You might think the premise would get a bit repetitive over time, and it does, but there are enough differences of setting and methods of living and/or dying that those repetitions didn't bother me. If you believe in reincarnation and love as destiny, then this movie is for you; if you don't, you'll understand why the film is titled as it is. Recommended.

Alice Lowe's baby

Agnes (Alice Lowe) keeps falling for the wrong guy and getting killed for it. She leaps into another life in another time and repeats the process over again. Alice Lowe is the writer, director, and star of this movie. Obviously, this is her baby and it is a fun, ridiculous, mind-bending, time-jumping baby. It is a nice fanciful sarcastic take on love or failed love. I love Alice Lowe's pitiful look when bad things start happening to her. I would like more physical comedy to put this over the top. This movie may as well go completely ridiculous. This could have gone even further and get legendary.

A quirky low for Brit dark-comedienne Lowe - this confusion flops, badly

Quirky Brit dark-comedienne Alice Lowe follows her fine writer / director debut "Prevenge" (after previously co-writing "Sightseers") with the ambitious "Timestalker" whose quirkiness disappointingly so out-weighs its dark comedy that it flops, badly. She plays various re-incarnated ladies over several different centuries whose only similarity seems to be that while plagued by Nick Frost their obsessive love for Aeurin Barnard causes their death (as witnessed by Jacob Anderson & Tanya Reynolds). The ultimate point is perhaps known only to Lowe, which may not've mattered if the film was funny... but no it's not - so this is sadly a low for Lowe.

Mish-mash

The concept was a good one but failed in its execution, At the same time the acting was surprisingly good - at least up to the point I fell asleep and had to rewatch 30 minutes, The script was mediocre, the title misleading.

Watchable visually in terms of changing scenes and time periods and entertaining in parts for sure, with a few early laughs, but ultimately it turned into a yawn fest, like one of those experimental worthy Channel 4 movies circa 1983.

If it's supposed to be a comedy it's not funny enough. If it's supposed to be romantic, it isn't in the slightest. If it's supposed to sci-fi, it's low-fi. Odd for the sake of it and the gore is unnecessary when portraying the main character dying over and over again., Subtlety would have worked better. Could have been a genuine cult classic but missed the target, if you pardon the knife-throwing pun : A lost opportunity that turned into a mish-mash.

A bonkers but brilliant film.

After watching "Timestalker," written and directed by Alice Lowe, I am eager to explore more of her films, particularly "Prevenge," which I have been aware of for some time but have yet to watch. This British black comedy/romance was truly a breath of fresh air, offering a refreshing perspective that felt original, humorous, poignant, and romantic. It was an absolutely brilliant and imaginative film. I found it exhilarating to experience a story that presented concepts and narratives I had not encountered before, despite having viewed numerous films throughout my life, particularly in the horror and dark comedy genres. If you are in search of a unique viewing experience that promises to entertain, I wholeheartedly believe this film will not disappoint.

Didn't work

I love the concept for this, and I love the actors in it, but sadly it didn't work. Jacob Anderson shone in this, and his character was definitely the most interesting out of the lot, the rest were just there and felt really flat. The trailer made this seem like fun film, but I didn't find humour in it, and I think that is down to how it was edited and lack of music combined with a disjointed story that really weren't that interesting. It needed more depth for it to work, I don't mind the absurdity but it was just really flat and too disjointed. It's just boring, but with nice cinematography and good actors; it's a shame that the script wasn't up to par with that.

To love again? :/ To laugh a lot! :) :)

I am a fan of Jacob Anderson's music and film work so Timestalker came to my attention since he plays a key role in it. Timestalker was written, directed and stars Alice Lowe and I saw it at my local film festival. This recurring love story could easily be described as a hilarious mixture of the songs Love Stinks by The J. Geils Band and Blasphemous Rumors by Depeche Mode. It was a joy to watch Jacob, Alice and the rest of the cast deftly play their parts and look like they were having the best time ever. The movie has some shockingly gory bits but provides a refreshingly novel comedic take on the broader themes of destiny and self determination. This movie was brilliant and I hope all of you will hunt down ... or stalk even :) ... opportunities to see it.

Timestalker

Agnes (Alice Lowe) is desperately in love with Alex (Aneurin Barnard). However in her feverish attempts to seduce him, she is brutally killed, but then reincarnated as an Agnes in a different century, seemingly doomed to repeat her quest and fail every time. Maintaining a blurred memory of her previous encounters, Agnes must find a way to break the cycle so that she can live and love.

Whilst this is certainly imaginative, on a shoestring budget, and there are a few laughs to be had here, this is very much a case of reach exceeding grasp. The first round of attempted seduction in seventeenth century Scotland, trying to understand what's happening and the subsequent violent death are fine, but thereafter this is repeated again and again. Why this is happening and more crucially why this is happening largely without laughs is a mystery. If it was intending to be saying anything other than time travelling romance doesn't work, that passed me by I'm afraid. Lowe certainly has a following after critical faves 'Prevenge' and 'Sightseers', sadly I just don't get it. I found this film repetitive and not particularly funny.

What have I just watched!?

This is a massive failure to me. I loved Hot Fuzz, so was expecting much better things from this film. I'm sorry to say I was very disappointed. It was not funny and just completely weird.

I love comedy and comedy films and have seen both Alice Lowe and Nick Frost in several, which were great. However, this film just did nothing for me. The acting is fine but it has a very much "straight to dvd" vibe about it and would not even be worth getting in a 5 for £30 deal at HMV!

It was a huge swing and a miss for me. Maybe I'm wrong and just didn't get it, but to me it was a waste of 80 minutes of my life!

Meh

This is supposed to be a comedy, right? Because I was not laughing. I clearly saw moments that were meant to be funny. Or maybe not "meant" but "expected to be". Maybe under different conditions, in different setting, with different tone, or even different actors they would be funny, but they were not.

But of course, humor is subjective, so maybe there is something else? This is supposed to be romantic, too. Romance here is that a woman just like the face of a supposed heretic, who... Did something? I am not sure what was so special that she followed him even when he had a mask on. But the point is that she "fell in love" with him when the mask was removed (which was only done before execution, which was stupid).

Sounds shallow? Well, it is. I guess it was meant to be kind of satirical, especially since she is falling for him through out her reincarnations, as well. In theory it could work. I can imagine a Black Mirror episode like that. But in practice it was plain boring. So boring, that I had to fast forward a lot.

The movie just had a lot of pointless fluff, for the sake of being philosophical, when in the end the message was more like "all women's issues are from men". Although, maybe I missed some other point while fast-forwarding. Anyway, I will remember this movie only because of Aneurin Bernard looking like young Elijah Woods.

There's a good Sci Fi storyline in there somewhere

What a wild film!

The synopsis drew me to the cinema, and the opening scene set the comedy in motion. Some of the audience gasped, some chuckled, but it made everyone pay attention.

The story progressed through the ages, with some wild ideas, and the final denouement was well hidden.

Cinematography was polished and effective, with surreal and 'period drama' scenes intermingled to keep you awake and alert.

As I came away, I was trying to make sense of the overall story and the macro level messages embedded in there, but to be honest, a second viewing would be more helpful, as there is so much happening that just needs to be observed before you can engage your brain to analyse the big picture.

I liked the sci fi notion that someone can be reincarnated and still in pursuit of a lover from a previous life. Asimov would have recognised the idea 'across space and time' The sets and scenes were just, well, good fun. But the end was satisfyingly modern in reaffirming girl power and challenging the idea that males rule.

Don't waste your time

This movie is a tragic art house disaster of a movie . This is a perfect example of why not to write scripts while on very strong drugs . Don't waste your time watching this movie it's pure torture. It's blows my mind on why anyone would have invested in this , but they did ! It's truly amazing why it exists and should have never existed. I'm sorry as my father rightly told me as a child it's just a job for out of work actors, this is the finest example of this amazingly crafted comment.

Don't waste your time with this movie or this movie will definitely waste your time for sure . Nick frost can be seen in many wonderful movies, don't bother watching him in this .

DIY - and find out

No pun intended - the movie is quite clear what it is about to tell you. Don't watch the trailer if possible though ... because that will give you every little gold nugget the movie has to offer .. which might make the movie watching experience ... well less good I think is what I will say.

That all said, the movie is fun, it is weird and it is able to make you laugh. And that comes down to the main actress, who also wrote and directed the movie. I assume she was not able to get certain projects off the ground ... so she is particular wary .... what to do and who to put in her movie! At least that is what I assume - Nick Frost is quite the character ... and I would go as far as to call all the other people in this well chosen ... when it comes to choosing, the main character may be dropping the ball ... but there is time to remedy that ... you know how and who! Do not be offended!
