Cameron Boyce's final film role. It was released October 2021, two-and-a-half years after his death in 2019.
Released almost a year after the TV movie Descendants 3 (2019), another one of Cameron Boyce's last films to come after his death in July 2019.
Director William Coakley filed a civil case against financiers of the film, Chrysanthi and Harvey Berger, seeking declaratory judgment after alleging harassment and causing a toxic and hostile work environment. Coakley claimed Cameron Boyce was pressured by them into kissing Nicole Elizabeth Berger, who was 14 years old and he 20 at the time, after refusing to due to their age difference. He had also claimed Boyce agreed with him with the fact that the film remained unfinished and they had fought to extend production to fix it, but Boyce had died before the time to do so was granted. In Coakley's statement, he alleged Boyce was concerned the unfinished film would upset his fans and tarnish his charitable endeavors as it went against his missions. The case was dropped by Coakley after Cameron's mother, Libby Boyce, sided with the defendants, saying he could not in good conscience be pitted against Boyce after the loss of Cameron.
The film had been in development since 2001, when David Fincher was attached to direct.
