Mads Mikkelsen’s 97% Historical Epic Takes Down Henry Cavill's Sleeper Hit on Global Streaming Charts
Image
Mads Mikkelsen will always be known for his roles in Doctor Strange and Rogue One, but a more recent film from the star that garnered acclaim has continued a run of impressive streaming success. Mikkelsen stars alongside Amanda Collin and Simon Bennebjerg in The Promised Land, formerly titled Bastarden, the historical epic telling the story of Ludvig Kahlen, a Danish explorer who cultivated Denmark's wild Jutland. The Promised Land is streaming on Paramount+ globally, where it’s been clashing with Tom Cruise for weeks, and now the film has even beaten the latest sleeper hit fromHenry Cavill, Night Hunter. The Promised Land only grossed $2 million at the box office, but it earned a “certified fresh” 97% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 95% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

The Promised Land is also streaming on Hulu in America, with no plans to leave anytime soon. The film can also be...

Image

Department Q casts Matthew Goode & Kelly Macdonald along with others for the Netflix series
Image
Department Q, the popular Danish crime novel, has seen a film series adaptation since 2013’s Danish film, Department Q: The Keeper of Lost Causes. It would then be followed by 2014’s Department Q: The Absent One. Then, that installment would be followed by 2016’s Department Q: A Conspiracy of Faith. Those would then proceed with 2018’s Journal 64, 2021’s The Macro Effect and the upcoming Boundless. Additionally, Netflix will be producing a series based on the crime novels.

Deadline has just unveiled the cast for the upcoming Department Q Netflix show. The series, which is based on author Jussi Adler-Olsen’s popular works, is currently filming in Scotland. Matthew Goode, who is known for Antony Armstrong Jones in season two of Left Bank’s regal drama The Crown, has been cast as Dci Carl Morck, along with Chloe Pirrie, who you may know from The Queen’s Gambit, plays ruthless and ambitious prosecutor Merrit Lingard.

TrustNordisk Boards New Department Q Film ‘Boundless’ by ‘Banshee’ Helmer (Exclusive)
Image
TrustNordisk has snapped up international sales rights to the new Danish crime thriller “Boundless,” based on fiction guru Jussi Adler-Olsen’s “Den Grænseløse,” his sixth novel in the Department Q series.

Danish helmer Ole Christian Madsen, credited for the HBO series “Banshee” (2013-16) and WWII drama “Flame & Citron” starring Mads Mikkelsen, has taken up the challenge of bringing Adler-Olsen’s suspenseful universe to the silver screens, working from a script by Jakob Weis.

Christian Madsen will reunite with his “Banshee” actor Ulrich Thomsen. The latter reprises the role of detective Carl Mørck, which he played in Nordisk Film Production’s previous Department Q film version, “The Marco Effect”.

The helmer said he has “a profound respect for the world built in Adler-Olsen’s novels, that he finds both “intriguing and fascinating.” “I do believe ‘Boundless’ the movie could expand that world even more,” he asserted.

In this new thriller,...

Terrence Malick in La Ligne rouge (1998)
Germany Strengthens Foreign Ties
Terrence Malick in La Ligne rouge (1998)
With more international co-productions in cinemas than ever before and a new crop of high-profile titles this year, Germany’s renown as fertile ground for foreign filmmakers continues to soar.

The number of German-backed cross-border titles in local theaters rose 30% last year to 98 — the most ever — and the trend looks set to continue. This year a slew of German co-productions are vying for Cannes’ Palme d’Or, among them Terrence Malick’s historical drama “A Hidden Life”; Jessica Hausner’s sci-fi thriller “Little Joe”; Marco Bellocchio’s mafia pic “The Traitor”; Corneliu Porumboiu’s “The Whistlers”; and Elia Suleiman’s “It Must Be Heaven.”

Key to the country’s filmmaking allure is a generous system of federal and regional funding sources and a dynamic film industry geared toward international co-production.

Leading companies include Pallas Films, whose credits include “It Must Be Heaven” and Sergey Dvortsevoy’s “Ayka”; Pandora Film, co-producer...

Fares Fares and Nikolaj Lie Kaas in Les Enquêtes du Département V: Dossier 64 (2018)
Palm Springs Review: ‘The Purity of Vengeance’
Fares Fares and Nikolaj Lie Kaas in Les Enquêtes du Département V: Dossier 64 (2018)
Already the highest-grossing Danish film ever — with each of its predecessors following closely behind — “The Purity of Vengeance” is the fourth adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s hugely popular “Department Q” novels about a Copenhagen cold-case police unit. It will also be the last in this particular series, as the screen rights have now transferred from Zentropa to Nordisk, with any future “Q” movies unlikely to retain the same cast or behind-scenes staples.

However lamented that baton-passing may be, there’s not much room for sentimental reflection in this high-gloss thriller, which is undeniably entertaining yet whose pleasures have the guilty edge of a particularly lurid airport read. The modern Scandinavian mysteries that have swept the globe (led by Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” books) often have a heart-of-darkness willingness to address social and historical wrongs. But here, hot-button issues of anti-immigrant prejudice, forced sterilization, sexual abuse and more feel reduced to...

Lone Scherfig
Danish Cinema Hitting on All Cylinders at Home and Abroad
Lone Scherfig
The Danish film industry is on a roll this year with berths secured at major festivals besides the Berlinale where Lone Scherfig’s “The Kindness of Strangers” landed the opening slot, just as Susanne Bier’s Sandra Bullock starrer “Bird Box” is breaking records on Netflix and first-timer Gustav Möller’s “The Guilty” made the foreign-language Oscar shortlist.

It’s a particularly good time because different types of local productions are performing well both at home, where the domestic share of total admissions was a strong 29% in 2018, and in the international arena, which is seeing a new generation of Danish directors coming to the fore.

Last year there were 26 homegrown titles released in Denmark that sold 3.8 million tickets total, up from 2.5 million tickets in 2017, when the national market share was 20%.

Aside from new works by known names such as Christoffer Boe, whose high-profile crimer “The Purity of Vengeance” topped the 2018 chart,...

Home-Grown Hits Drive 2018 Nordic Box Office
Last year, Danish, Icelandic and Norwegian films triumphed with local audiences, fueling general attendance. In Sweden, local fare also upped their share of an overall sluggish market, while Finland had a quieter year after a record 2017. Everywhere “Mamma Mia-Here We Go Again” was number one except in Denmark where local films were back in favor.

Denmark

After two years of slide, Danish films were back in favour with local crowds, and boosted general admissions to 13 million (up 4.6%) and box office to Dkk 1.1 billion ($173 million). With 3.8 million admissions (up 34.2% from 2017), representing Dkk 290.9 million ($44.5 million) in revenue, local titles claimed a 29% market share, the success target just set in new Danish Film Agreement for 2019-2023.

“In a country like Denmark with a relatively small feature film production [21 films in 2018], the box office will inevitably vary from one year to the next,” commented Claus Ladegaard, CEO at the Danish Film Institute. The latter welcomed the...

Scandi Actress Clara Rosager To Play Miss Sweden In Keira Knightley Pageant Protest Movie ‘Misbehaviour’
Keira Knightley at an event for Anna Karenine (2012)
Exclusive: Rising Danish actress Clara Rosager (Before The Frost) has joined Keira Knightley-fronted Miss World movie Misbehaviour in the supporting role of Maj Christal Johansson, Miss Sweden.

The Crown outfit Left Bank Pictures is producing the dramedy, currently in production, which is set against the backdrop of the 1970 Miss World competition in London, hosted by Bob Hope. The newly formed Women’s Liberation Movement achieved fame by invading the stage and disrupting the live broadcast of the beauty contest. When the show resumed, the result caused uproar: the winner was not the Swedish favorite but Miss Grenada — the first black woman to be crowned Miss World.

Knightley leads cast with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jessie Buckley, Keeley Hawes, Rhys Ifans, Greg Kinnear, Lesley Manville, Loreece Harrison and Phyllis Logan. As we revealed yesterday, Suki Waterhouse will play Miss USA. Philippa Lowthorpe (Three Girls) is directing. Screenplay comes from Rebecca Frayn with revisions by Gaby Chiappe.

Zentropa Crime-Thriller ‘The Purity Of Vengeance’ Breaks Danish Box Office Record
Fares Fares and Nikolaj Lie Kaas in Les Enquêtes du Département V: Dossier 64 (2018)
The fourth and final Department Q film The Purity Of Vengeance has become the highest-grossing Danish film at the local box office.

The Zentropa-produced film, released in early October by Nordisk Film Distribution, has made $11.1M (72.5M Dkk), surpassing the second instalment in the Department Q series, The Absent One. The film now ranks eleventh on the all-time box office chart and sits narrowly behind The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It has sold 730,380 tickets to date.

The four parts of the hugely popular crime-thriller series now rank first, second, fourth and fifth on the Danish box office chart for national films. The latest instalment, based on the fourth book in Jussi Adler-Olsen’s book series about crime unit Department Q, charts how a series of mysterious disappearances in 1987 are all eerily connected to the same person. Script comes from Bo Erhard Hansen while the series’ ever-present actors are Nikolaj Arcel...

‘The Purity of Vengeance’ Scores Best Opening for Local Film at Danish B.O.
Christoffer Boe
Christoffer Boe’s thriller “The Purity of Vengeance,” the fourth and final opus of the hit “Department Q” franchise, has scored the best opening for a local film at the Danish box office.

Produced by Zentropa, “The Purity of Vengeance” has sold more than 215,052 admissions since opening on Oct.4, underscoring the ever-lasting appeal of the Nordic Noir genre.

Louise Vesth, who produced the film at Zentropa, said that “considering the total Danish population counts about 6 million people, an opening with more than 215,000 admissions sold is incredible.”

“The Purity of Vengeance” was written by Bo Erhard Hansen (“The Art of Crying”), Nikolaj Arcel (“The Dark Tower”) and Mikkel Nørgaard (“The Absent One”), based on the fourth book of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s “Department Q” collection.

The movie brings back Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares in their respective roles of chief detective Carl Mørck and his assistant Assad. “The Purity of Vengeance...

Official Trailer for Danish Mystery Thriller 'The Purity of Vengeance'
Time for a taste of some Danish mystery. Zentropa Entertainment has debuted the full official trailer for a Danish thriller titled The Purity of Vengeance, originally titled Journal 64. This film is about a series of mysterious disappearances in 1987 that are all eerily connected to the same person. The investigative thriller follows Carl Mørck and Assad from Department Q, who try to figure out how a bunch of dead bodies are connected and who's behind everything. The Purity of Vengeance stars Fares Fares, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Nicolas Bro, Anders Hove, Søren Pilmark, and Elliott Crosset Hove. This looks very cool, a bit like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo films or even Fincher's Se7en, but with some unique twists. I am curious to see more footage from this and check it out whenever it hits theaters outside of Denmark. Dig in. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Christoffer Boe's The Purity of Vengeance,...
