Award-winning artist Tyler, The Creator has joined the cast of A24’s “Marty Supreme” in his film debut, the company announced on Monday.

He’ll star alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Timothée Chalamet in the film directed and co-written by Josh Safdie.

Previous reports said that the film would be based on the life of table tennis champion Marty Reisman, but sources at the studio say the film is actually not a biopic but rather a fictionalized original work co-written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, both of whom will also produce with Eli Bush and Anthony Katagas.

“Marty Supreme” will mark Safdie’s first feature project since his 2019 film “Uncut Gems,” which he wrote and directed with his brother Benny. The brothers announced earlier this year that they would no longer collaborate on films in order to pursue separate projects.

From director Josh Safdie, “Marty Supreme” marks Tyler’s film debut. The fashion designer and “See You Again” singer previously co-created and starred in Adult Swim’s “Loiter Squad” series alongside his Odd Future cohorts. He also co-created the Adult Swim animated show “The Jellies!” as well as the Viceland docuseries “Nuts + Bolts.”

Tyler joins Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow in the A24 title, which is said to center on a professional ping pong pro. Recording artist Tyler, The Creator is boarding the Josh Safdie directed movie, Marty Supreme, opposite Gwyneth Paltrow and Timothée Chalamet. The pic reps the multi-hyphenate’s on-screen feature film debut.

Plot details are under wraps, but the movie is reportedly inspired by pro ping pong player Marty Reisman. Ronald Bronstein and Safdie wrote the screenplay, with the pair to produce alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet and A24.

Reisman was a legendary American table tennis player known for his flamboyant style and exceptional skill. He started playing the sport at a young age and quickly rose to become one of the most iconic figures in the sport, winning multiple national and international titles. He was particularly known for his strong emphasis on spin not to mention a distinctive forehand and backhand technique. Reisman was known for being a master of deception and could manipulate the ball in ways that confused his opponents.

“Marty Supreme” is a fictionalized, original feature with official plot details being kept under wraps. However, Variety previously reported that the film may be loosely inspired by the life of Marty Reisman, a ping pong champion who won 22 major ping pong titles from 1946 to 2002, and five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships, across his career. He also made history as the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport while competing in the United States National Hardbat Championship. Reisman died in 2012.

For the film, Chalamet, Safdie, Bronstein, Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, and A24 produce.

Exclusive: Tyler, The Creator has reteamed with Lionel Boyce and Davon ‘Jasper’ Wilson, two of his bandmates in the Odd Future collective and producers on Adult Swim series Loiter Squad for a new animated comedy at Fox.

The network is developing Shell Beach and has handed the project, which comes from Fox Entertainment and Bento Box Entertainment, a script commitment.

The show follows an overzealous lifeguard named Wally and his very smart, but lazy partner, Tyson, who, along with their unique group of friends, inhabit Shell Beach – the most famous beach town in the world. Wally’s passion to be the best lifeguard often makes very simple problems become much more complex than they ever would need to be.
