Stephen Mangan is very talented and funny, and I had hoped this show would utilize his skills. It did not. The subject matter is more awkward and stressful to watch than funny. The director/creator David Cross is also generally funny in an off the wall kind of way but this show seems out of character for him. I like a little heightened tension in TV series but not from the start to the end of each episode.
I'm surprised so many people gave low ratings, love this show, makes you wonder what's going to happen next.
My one wish for this show is that Stephan Mangan is not a writer for it, as with previous work, especially Episodes, I have been blown away and chuckled a lot! Alas with this show, it could not be farther from that!
I think this has been billed wrongly, this is a family drama more than comedy, which is the problem, it tries to be light hearted but simply the subject matter is not, and this leads to very awkward scenes, not least of which is the restaurant scene in episode 1. It was not funny and actually I cringed at some parts and was slightly offended in places. But this seems to be Sky style programming now, push the boundaries and take the risk!
I did see the trailers and was confused how the subject matter would work, and the answer from the first episode is it doesn't, it is no fault of any of the actors, it is entirely (again of recent times) of the script writing, it just is not suitable for the genre. I won't be watching any more episodes, but then I am sure some will find this as acceptable entertainment!

You get Stephen Mangan, Heather Graham and John Gielgud to be in a show and you waste their time and ours with this?
Cringey, our family agreed to change to something else after 15 minutes!

Hoping there will eventually be a second series but given all the bad reviews somewhat doubtful. A bit meandering and I was easily distracted but overall worth the watch. Too bad it ended in a cliffhanger! Just puzzled why Britbox and reviewers think John Gielgud was in this program? He died in 2000. This program was originally broadcast in 2018! Gielgud's last TV appearance was in 1998...
