Résumé
Reviewers say 'Senke nad Balkanom' is acclaimed for its high production values, compelling narrative, and historical context, drawing comparisons to 'Peaky Blinders' and 'Babylon Berlin'. The series is celebrated for its intricate plot, believable characters, and strong performances, especially by Dragan Bjelogrlic. However, some critics note issues with historical accuracy and excessive profanity. Despite minor flaws, the show is recognized for its ambitious storytelling, detailed costumes, and authentic settings, marking a significant achievement in Serbian television.
Avis à la une
First of all, this is something completely different than anything else that was released in Serbia in a past decade. It's too exciting and pilot was great. Bjela did a great job like with Montevideo. There is a murder, twists, suspects, there are Cozacs from Russia, VMRO from Macedonia, there are Germans, Serbs and a few more interesting groups. If I can compare this one with something famous it will be Peaky Blinders for sure. My recommendations to everyone.
I tend to be an admirer of Scandinavian and British crime series, but from time to time I would like to widen my horizons and find out what other countries can offer in this field... If real events-characters-history included, it is always a plus. And as I have accustomed to read subtitles, I prefer non-dubbing.
I had read some praising comments on this Series, but I had only very general prior information and no knowledge of Serbian actors at all... But I was able to delve into the events and characters right from the beginning; it was also visible that a lots of skills and funds were spent, and the contrasts of pre-II WW era well captivated. Evidently, there are some controversies and added artistry, but it is no documentary or historical study material, after all.
As for performances, I found them pleasant at least, with some supporting cast slightly excelling the main one (e.g. Marija Bergam as Maja Davidovic, Gordan Kichic as Alimpije Miric - or perhaps their characters were more versatile), and all representatives of different ethnicities spoke in their respective language - also an elevating factor for me.
I liked Season 2 a bit more, although a certain twist with a policeman was a bit too much...? Season 3 is underway and I am looking forward to it and the final episode of Season 2 ended in an intriguing manner.
Anyway, well directed, produced and performed, and the Series could be introduced to many more countries.

Before this show came along, Serbian production was mostly centered on family dramedies in the form of telenovelas. Bjelogrlic did something special when he came up with Black Sun. Not only did he raise the bar, he also fueled the production of other awesome Serbian production tv shows( Beleznica profesora Miskovica and Kalkanski Krugovi being a prime example). As for the show itself, it focuses on political games and underground of post-WWI Belgrade and Yugoslavia. It's not historically accurate but it's interesting take on the history of Balkan Peninsula. Show is full of awesome, believable plot-twists, interesting characters(the main trio is just superb) and the production values are equal to HBO, Netflix... Some of these big corps should give a lot of money to Bjelogrlic because he showed here that he can make a captivating, interesting, quality tv-show with not that much money. Just imagine what he can do with a true big budget.
You need to see this show! Great story, great actors, great production. Can't wait for the next season. Must watch!
Le saviez-vous
- AnecdotesJatagan Mala, one of the main settings of the show, was an actual area of Belgrade that existed between the World Wars. Its name means "Sword Neighborhood" in Turkish. It consisted of illegally built small houses and most of its inhabitants were very poor. It was completely demolished in the 1960s to make space for a highway, colleges and other new buildings.
- GaffesSeason two starts on 31st December 1933 and several characters use Zippo lighters, though Zippo was first made in 1936, and the design used in the series was introduced post WWII.
