Sallywood is a heartfelt and compelling dramedy that masterfully blends humor and emotion. Directed by Xaque Gruber, the film is a deeply personal project that tells his own story of becoming Sally Kirkland's assistant and navigating the highs and lows of working alongside one of Hollywood's most iconic figures. Gruber's unique perspective brings authenticity and charm to the narrative, offering an insider's look at the fascinating-and often chaotic-world of show business.
At the heart of the film is Sally Kirkland herself, delivering a raw and magnetic performance as a fictionalized version of her larger-than-life persona. Her journey through Hollywood's unpredictable landscape is portrayed with equal parts wit, vulnerability, and resilience. Gruber's storytelling captures the nuances of their relationship, blending humor with poignant moments of self-reflection and personal growth.
The talented supporting cast brings incredible energy and depth to the story, including standout performances by Tyler Steelman, Tom Connolly, Jennifer Tilly, Eric Roberts, Maria Conchita Alonso, and others. The film is also a bittersweet tribute, featuring one of the final on-screen appearances of the late Lenny Von Dohlen and Michael Lerner, who deliver memorable and heartfelt performances that remind us of their immense talent.
Sallywood is more than just a Hollywood tale; it's a moving exploration of friendship, ambition, and identity, told with sincerity and heart. Xaque Gruber's directorial debut is a triumph-a must-watch for anyone who loves character-driven stories brought to life by a stellar cast.

With a terrific cast and crew, this marvelous coming- of- age story is never indulgent but is funny, tender, has a great pace and some truly inspiring scenes. It is as much a coming-of- age story for the star, Oscar nominated / Golden Globe winner Sally Kirkland, who faces the story of her life in retrospect, just as the young Xaque, looks to his future. Casting is superb with every player present and fresh in the moment. The film's production quality is perfect in every department including some wonderful original music. This sweet-hearted picture has won over 29 festival awards and should enjoy a strong distribution life. Bravo!

I didn't know what to expect. I actually do know that Xaque Gruber is an extremely talented writer, but... This film is a triumph. The actors are amazing. The script is funny and real and and every word and scene tell a story that we can and do relate to while we laugh, and cry, and care. Xaque Gruber as writer/director brought a true story to life with his amazing cast and crew that will resonate for generations.
Xaque (the protagonist, brilliantly acted by Tyler Steelman) comes to Hollywood from Maine. He has had a loving upbringing in rural Maine, and starts the film off with a truly funny reveal of how he went to Hollywood with a fan-crush on Sally Kirkland. Sally is at best a handful and at worst at self-absorbed narcissist extreme. As the film's star, Sally dives in, and shows us that yes, this may be a troublesome part of who she is, but she is also loving, deserving of love, and one of the best actresses ever on screen, despite the apparent poverty of her life in Hollywood as she ages and struggles to even make car repairs.
I can't wait to see this film again. The acting was brilliant, and what a cast. I credit Gruber with bringing this story to life in a way that is not only believable, but so funny and genuine. Hope many will watch and love.

I saw Sallywood at the Silicon Beach Film Festival and what a gem! The cast were all amazing and played effortlessly off of each other. The story was incredibly well written, so honest and truly heartwarming as we follow Sally and Zach in their new friendship, her pursuing her next big role and him pursuing a career in writing. I was either smiling or laughing out loud the entire way through and loved the moments of absolute silliness. The love between Sally and Zack shines through and I was lucky enough to meet Sally, director Xaque Gruber and other cast members after the show. If you get the chance, you've got to see this movie!!!
Sallywood is a truly exceptional film that shines in both its direction and performances, making it a standout in modern cinema. From the very first frame, it's clear that this film was crafted with care and precision. The direction is sharp and confident, guiding the audience through a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Every scene is carefully composed, every shot chosen to highlight the emotions and themes at play, making Sallywood a visually stunning and engaging experience.
The performances are nothing short of outstanding. The actors bring their characters to life with such depth and authenticity that it's impossible not to become invested in their journeys. Whether it's the lead, whose vulnerability and strength are beautifully portrayed, or the supporting cast, whose performances add layers of complexity to the story, each actor shines in their role. Their chemistry together creates a sense of real connection and intimacy, drawing the audience into the world of the film and making every moment feel genuine. The characters are well-developed, each with their own quirks, fears, and desires, and the actors fully embody these traits, making them relatable and memorable.
One of the standout features of Sallywood is its humor. The film is filled with witty, clever moments that never feel forced. The jokes are sharp and well-timed, offering lightness and laughter when needed but never undermining the seriousness of the themes it explores. The humor acts as a natural relief, creating a balance between the moments of levity and the more poignant, emotional scenes. It's the kind of humor that comes from real life, from the way people joke around to mask their pain or deal with difficult situations. This grounding in reality makes the humor feel authentic and adds to the overall richness of the film.
At the heart of Sallywood is a powerful exploration of ageism. The film takes a critical look at how society often dismisses and marginalizes older generations, making them feel invisible or irrelevant. Through its characters and storyline, Sallywood gives voice to those who are typically overlooked, showing the richness of their lives and the value they still hold. The film tackles this topic with both sensitivity and wit, using humor as a way to highlight the absurdity of age-based discrimination. It shows how ageism isn't just a societal issue but a deeply personal one, affecting the way individuals see themselves and how they are seen by others.
What makes Sallywood particularly compelling is the way it handles this issue without resorting to preachiness. The film doesn't just tell the audience about ageism; it shows it through the experiences of its characters, making the message resonate more deeply. Through moments of humor and drama, the film paints a portrait of older individuals who are still vibrant, capable, and full of life, challenging the stereotypes that society often imposes on them. It's a refreshing take on aging, one that celebrates the wisdom and experience that come with age, rather than reducing older people to caricatures or ignoring them altogether.
But Sallywood isn't just about ageism-it's about the broader human experience. It captures the complexity of life, from the joy and humor of everyday interactions to the pain of loss and the fear of being forgotten. The film is a beautiful reminder of how age, identity, and the way we connect with others shape our lives. The story resonates with anyone who has ever felt overlooked or misunderstood, regardless of age, and offers a compassionate exploration of the universal human desire to be seen, heard, and valued.
Ultimately, Sallywood is a film that will stay with you long after you've seen it. Its blend of humor, heart, and social commentary makes it both entertaining and meaningful. It reminds us that no matter how old we are, we all have something valuable to contribute, and that it's never too late to live life fully. Whether you find yourself laughing, crying, or reflecting on your own experiences, Sallywood offers a rich, emotional, and rewarding cinematic experience that speaks to the heart of what it means to age with dignity and grace.
