Avis à la une
This movie is one of the few gems to come out of the Afrikaans film industry. It evokes a whole range of emotions from utter horror and sadness to joy and nostalgia.
A powerful performance from Simoné Nortman and a very accurate portrayal of 1970s South Africa, makes this a must watch movie for South Africans of all ages, who will, without a shadow of a doubt see themselves or those close to them, in the emotionally true characters within the film.

In this Afrikaans romcom, love is portrayed in an unusual and unconventional way. Movie is in Afrikaans with English subtitles. The South African Afrikaans film, Vir die Voëls. The only way to be free is to stay independent, because love is only Simoné Nortmann as Irma Humpel in the film Vir die voëls (For the birds)The protagonist, Irma Humpel (Simoné Nortmann), of the Afrikaans film Vir die voëls ("For the Birds") questions the Afrikaner society, South Africa's Afrikaans-speaking society. She questions the idea of how a lady should look or act by being the opposite of what is expected of a lady. She is unlike the average Afrikaner woman. Irma considers herself independent and does not know whether she would ever marry. For her, marriage means being submissive to a man. Because of her alcoholic and abusive father, the married life is not something she wishes to have.
I haven't seen a movie this good in ages. Talk about an uplifting film. In a sea of movies without much substance.... this is like a breath of fresh air. Although there are underlying issues that are common to many families, the characters model a gentler and kinder way of working them through.
This is not just a movies, it's a story that reels you in.

What a story!!! This is a girl born in an abusive house where she had to fight her way out. She is strong headed and knows what she wants. She doesn't care about traditions.

I started this movie a few weeks ago. Not being one for sub-titles, I only watched the first 5 minutes or so and then switched to something else.
I decided to go back to it today, and I am SO glad I did.

I cannot recommend this enough. And if you're like me and don't tend to watch sub-titled moves, stick with it! You'll be glad you did.
