Starhunter ReduX

Redux is proclaimed as the original vision, minus the interference from censorship cuts. From watching just the first episode, and remembering that other titles that pushed boundaries in first episode were also censored on re-release (looking at you SG-1 'Children of the Gods'), but in a post Spartacus and Game of Thrones world, the more 'adult' nature of the Redux edit is pretty tame.

As is the 3D CGI, in a post-Battlestar Galactica era, showing more a limitation of budget then any lack of skill, with the look being fairly consistent, though perhaps not matched to the style of the live action sequences in the way Babylon5 was.

On a technical level, the one item that really jars is the audio transitions for music and background atmospherics between scenes. There is none. It's jarring to the ears, while the sound within scenes is consistent, minus the odd obvious ADR dropped in.

For fans, this will be interesting to watch, for the newcomer they'll be laughing at the overall quality, as it doesn't compare to even current Indie projects, thanks to the march of production technologies.

This is a decidedly Pre-HD romp, loosing the battle to survive in a 4K world.

Its not the best Science Fiction show out there. But its not the worst either. We all have our favorites, and this is one of my favorites. To those that are saying this program is riding on Firefly's coat tails, or eating its dust. You're wrong. Firefly came out in 2002. Starhunter was out in 2000. Do the math. Its rather simple.

Enjoy this show for what it was. An interesting science fiction, that wasn't a carbon copy of something else out there. It was different. It was unique. If you're going to complain about the special effects, take look at Doctor Who in the 1960s or how bad the CGI was in the early seasons of Babylon 5.

Besides. The story is reallly what matters. This tv show has that. Story. And yes at times it can be disjointed. But its still there.

I don't know who resurrected this show and thought it was a good idea to re-cut re-release it under a new 2017 - 18 release date, but, if you go into this thinking it's something new, you're getting catfished with something that's from 2000 that looks and sounds like it was done in the 1980s.

Apologies to anyone who loved this show ... 18 years ago, but, I couldn't get beyond the first 10 minutes, despite the spectacular boobs in the first minute of the show. If you don't already have some retro-attachment to this show, then, by today's standards, it's unwatchable. The acting (or directorship, since bad directors can make stellar actors looks awful) is ... well, it's so bad, you just have to see it to believe how bad it is. The same seems to go for the writing as well. Calling the dialogue "uncomplicated" would be extremely gentle and kind. The whole thing is ... I just couldn't, and I tried my best. Compared to other shows filmed around the same time, it might be on par with Lexx when it comes to budget and special effects. I liked Lexx. I still love Lexx. That, however, comes from watching Lexx decades ago and liking it decades ago. I would not expect anyone that's never seen Lexx to watch and like it today. Thus, there's that. This might be a fantastic re-showing for anyone that was familiar with and loved it ... when it was filmed decades ago and is now re-whatevered. I lack that favor bias, and find it unwatchable. Again, that's subjective, and some folks might maybe, perhaps think otherwise.

Whoever decided to resurrect Starhunter deserves some credit for having guts. This reboot series is pretty bad: poor writing, acting, sfx, and direction. Serious science fiction fans will either howl with disgust or derisive laughter at this series. It ain't great, but if you want to practice your heckling skills, then grab a bowl of popcorn and a soda and enjoy yourself. That's how I'm handling this show. Even so, it is good to see Michael Pare on screen again.

Well I'm just a few episodes in but it reminds me of a badly done Firefly. I will soldier on and see.
