Stamp was born in London during World War II. He previously stated, “The great blessing of my life is that I had the really hard bit at the beginning because we were really poor.”

Though the process of anime creation is often associated with adapting source materials like manga or light novels, there is plenty of fantastic work being done with original anime as well. Some of the greatest anime ever made, from Cowboy Bebop to Neon Genesis Evangelion , are original anime, proving that it is a consistently ripe medium for storytelling. We are still four months away from pressing play on Jason Momoa's (A Minecraft Movie) passion project — the epic series Chief of War. However, as it teased all of its summer releases, Apple TV+ offered a brief glimpse of the show and its epic scale. The cast also features Luciane Buchanan (The Night Agent) and Tamuera Morrison (Star Wars), and the nine-episode series is set to debut on August 1.
Even though it's not much revealing, the teaser does hint at the scale of the show, and it looks like once again Apple TV+ has spared no expense to make a new title look as good as possible. The first bit shows Momoa among a huge slate of warriors who look like they are about to enter a massive battle. Then, we get a look at the show's impressive costume design and get the notion that Momoa's character Ka'iana is...

Anyone else feeling the tension in the room? The red Netflix icon on TV usually evokes joy and excitement, but at this point, it is the opposite. Netflix’s actions are straight-up unhinged and not in a great way. Over the years, the dominating streaming platform has delivered some of the best original movies and series and bestowed subscribers with a myriad of masterpieces in different genres.
However, Netflix has acquired a bad reputation since the platform has started to cancel beloved series like it’s nothing. Anne with an E, Shadow and Bone, Mindhunter — the painful list goes on and on and on. Sure, sometimes a show simply doesn’t do well, and the interest of the viewership is lost, but how does one justify canceling a series that was enjoyed by many and was one of the most anticipated shows of 2025? Leave it to Netflix to come up with reasons.

Netflix’s The Recruit was the perfect mix of action, humor, and chaos, led by Noah Centineo as the unlucky but resourceful CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks. Across two seasons, the show delivered high-stakes missions, unexpected twists, and plenty of moments where Owen found himself in way over his head.
Season 2 took things to the next level, moving the action to South Korea and introducing new characters like Teo Yoo’s dangerous and mysterious operative. It was the kind of spy dramedy that kept you on the edge of your seat one minute and laughing the next, exactly what made it so fun to watch.

And yet, despite all that, Netflix decided to pull the plug after just two seasons. Even with strong viewership numbers and a dedicated fanbase, The Recruit joins the ever-growing list of shows canceled way too soon.

In the mid-'80s, residents of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area found themselves in the grip of one of America’s most notorious serial killers: Richard Ramirez, a.k.a. The Night Stalker. Though his story has been told countless times over the years, Peacock looks to shed new light on his reign of terror with its latest true crime docuseries, Richard Ramirez: The Night Stalker Tapes, which promises to tell the killers' tale like never before.
Debuting today, Dec. 10 on Peacock, the two-part docuseries features 25 hours of audio recordings of Ramirez himself that were taken while he sat on death row awaiting his execution. The Night Stalker is credited with killing at least 14 people between April 1984 and August 1985, and was later sentenced to death in 1989. However, Ramirez died at Marin General Hospital in 2013 thanks to complications secondary to B-cell lymphoma while still going through the appeals process.

Black Doves starring Keira Knightley took little to no time to become one of Netflix's best new hit shows! The British spy drama premiered on Dec. 5 and quickly shot up to the peak of the top 10 most popular shows ranking. Knightley even scored a Golden Globe nomination for her performance just a few days after the show's release.
Thankfully, those of us who became instantly hooked on all the twists and turns Black Doves takes won't have to worry about the show going anywhere. Well ahead of the premiere of its first season, Netflix renewed the series for a second season. There's plenty more shocking drama to behold when Black Doves season 2 makes its way to our watch lists.

After the success of The Night Agent season 1, anticipation is high for the new season, but unfortunately, the next installment of The Night Agent cannot replicate one of season 1's greatest moments. Released in 2023, The Night Agent is a political thriller that quickly rose to the top of Netflix's charts, becoming one of the platform's most-streamed series. The show follows Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent who gets pulled into a massive government conspiracy. While The Night Agent season 2 has the potential to be as good as the first season, there's one trick the new episodes cannot replicate.
The future of The Night Agent is particularly exciting because season 3 has already been confirmed. The Night Agent season 2 will be premiering in winter 2025, and the third season will likely begin development soon after. In this way, Netflix is giving audiences a solid dose of The Night Agent before being sure that the new seasons will succeed.

After The Night Agent broke records with its first season, anticipations were high for season 2, but a recent piece of news has made the next installment even more exciting. Upon its release in 2023, The Night Agent quickly catapulted to the top of Netflix's charts, becoming the third-most-viewed debuting series ever and the sixth-most-viewed series of all time. Audiences were compelled by the show's fast-paced action and likable characters, including Gabriel Basso's Peter Sutherland. Considering The Night Agent's success, the future of the show is brighter, and now it has become even brighter.
It was recently reported by Deadline that The Night Agent has been renewed for a third season ahead of its season 2 premiere. Previously, it was renewed for season 2 almost immediately after it debuted, so this new renewal isn't necessarily shocking, but it definitely is good news. Clearly, Netflix feels strongly about this series, enough so...

As we experience the ongoing rise of the cities around us, a rise defined by such aspects like gentrification and real-estate deals, we also witness the creation of a new hierarchy within our society. The process is one which sometimes escapes the eye since it has been subtle and accepted in the perception of many, but considering our lives have become so fast these days, perhaps this should not come as a surprise. Director Tsai Ming-liang, among few filmmakers in the world, has apparently decided to take the time necessary to observe this process in all of its consequences, creating a kind of cinema often referred to as “slow cinema”. His eleventh feature “Stray Dogs” is another example of his approach to filmmaking which observes the aforementioned process and also its repercussions for the people living in the city.

Did disco ever go out of style? Not if you ask Mark Ronson and Dua Lipa, the forces behind the soundtrack for this year’s No. 1 box office hit, Barbie. Specifically, they co-penned the album’s lead single “Dance the Night,” which is performed by the English-Albanian singer.
In an era where No. 1 movies don’t always have top-ranking soundtracks, the hip swaying, hummable, string-fueled ditty took on a life of its own, becoming an anthem for summer and notching Grammy noms for Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media. Stateside, “Dance the Night” peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lipa’s fifth top-ten single.
However, as easy and free-breezy as “Dance the Night” might sound, Ronson, who won an Oscar for the original song “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, says the single was “the longest I’ve ever worked on any song.

At the time of its 1978 release, "Superman" was one of the most expensive films ever made, boasting a $55 million budget. To tell the story of the famous Man of Steel — an out-of-this-world superhero of immense strength that stood for American values — director Richard Donner's film had to be larger-than-life. The colors were vivid, the airborne special effects were (at the time) groundbreaking, and it had an outstanding cast that truly brought these beloved comic book characters to life and treated them as dynamic individuals.

Following a career in Britain’s MI5 and MI6 in the 1950s and ‘60s, Cornwell became the mega-bestselling author of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Night Manager and The Constant Gardener, all of which were successfully adapted by Hollywood. Editor's Note: This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and the movie covered here would not exist without the labor of the writers and actors in both unions.
When I think of Maggie Q, I think of the word badass. The actress has a long career as an action star, which makes a film like Fear the Night an absolute no-brainer. Do you want to see her destroy the hopes of would-be-robbers by kicking their asses? You will get exactly that with Neil Labute’s Fear the Night. The disappointing fact is that the movie would be exponentially better with more substantial writing and more confident directing.
The film follows Tess, a war vet who returns home after many years of deployment. She lives with her sister, and they have an estranged relationship, with mistrust and annoyance from both sides. The duo is invited to their...

After a brief break for Thanksgiving, “Saturday Night Live” is back with another returning host, Jennifer Lopez. She hosted “SNL” back in 2001 (providing a classic Gemini’s Twin sketch where she played “Lady Speed Stick”) and then again back in 2010 (an episode with one of the three “Hollywood Dish” sketches). But this is the first episode she’s hosted where she has not also been musical guest, despite an upcoming album and Super Bowl halftime performance, on top of all the well-deserved awards buzz for “Hustlers.”
Host: Jennifer Lopez
It was hard to think of anything better than the tuxedo Jennifer Lopez wore for her opening monologue — and then she did a reveal of her wearing the iconic green Versace dress from the 2000 Grammys.
It’s also worth noting that 50-year-old Lopez — and keep in mind, her being 50 and looking the way she does was an integral component of the...

This week’s somewhat Halloween-centric “Saturday Night Live” featured the return of Chance the Rapper, using his past experience as both a former host and musical guest — never at the same time — to this time do double duty in the same night.
Host: Chance the Rapper
While this return episode is not as good as his first time hosting back in Season 43, Chance still functions as a really good host for those same reasons. Although, based on his monologue about how second time’s the charm — which is why he loves being from the Second City, Chicago, so much — he’d obviously argue that this episode is even better. He’d lose that argument, but he’s at least got a leg to stand on his monologue rap when he says he prefers “Angel” to “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
Other than the sketches themselves, the biggest issue with Chance’s...

In the second episode of its 45th season, “Saturday Night Live” went with a first-time host in “Killing Eve” and “Fleabag” creator (and star) Phoebe Waller-Bridge. However, unlike what a certain promo for this episode promised, Waller-Bridge did not carry her three Primetime Emmys around with her in every sketch…
Host: Phoebe Waller-Bridge
… and she didn’t even show them off in the opening monologue.
She did, however, get the type of freedom stand-up comedians tend to get with their opening monologues, which was a simultaneously surprising and excellent choice. After all, if you’re going to acknowledge a person’s genius as a writer, it should be on display. Waller-Bridge showed off her talent for wringing humor from the unlikeliest of places, as she does during a hilarious tangent about genitals, setting a high bar for the rest of the episode to clear, which it does.
As mentioned in...

Another new “Saturday Night Live,” another first-time host. That’s no problem at all: It’s always nice to see some fresh celebrities in the rotation, and even if the episode material itself hasn’t been the most stellar, the season has definitely on the right track with the guest host choices. That definitely continues with Don Cheadle, though, like Liev Schreiber before him, it’s surprising he’d never hosted before. Actually, even more surprising than the Schreiber thing, to be perfectly honest.
Host: Don Cheadle
How did Don Cheadle do as a first-time host? Well, not only does Cheadle give an actual comedic monologue — honestly, one who didn’t know him might think he’s a stand-up comedian — he reminds everyone he was in an episode of “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” while doing so. Cheadle is a man who commits when he’s in a project, whether it...

Back in 2016, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Liz Cooper was living in a dimly lit, basement apartment. She placed a vase of flowers in one of the windows to provide a burst of color and it ended up serving as a source of inspiration.
“It was some really pretty purple flower that eventually dried up and [still] looked exactly the same,” says the 26-year-old Baltimore, Maryland native, while sipping a pale-green juice at a grocery store in East Nashville. “That’s not what my songs are about, but they for some reason pulled something...

Eric Clapton recently sat in for Doyle Bramhall II’s bluesy, soulful new song, “Everything You Need.” As Bramhall woos a would-be lover, Clapton’s unmistakable, lyrical guitar playing weaves in and out of the vocal line until he takes center stage for a short but poignant guitar solo. The track will appear on Bramhall’s upcoming fifth album, Shades, due out October 5th.
In addition to Clapton, the ever-prolific Bramhall, who has played on countless records by other artists, collaborated with Norah Jones and the Tedeschi Trucks Band for Shades.

If you, as I, are the type to presume that a “dramaturgical assistant” is some form of midlevel job in a hospital’s oncology department you might be startled to see that none other than the great Michael Haneke is credited on the promotional material of To The Night–an unrelenting new work from filmmaker Peter Brunner–as being that very thing.
We are, naturally, being rather facetious here. The film in question, which follows an artist/arsonist’s (artsonist’s?) creative attempts to get over the horrific loss of his family–who perished in a fire from which he himself was the lone survivor–is in fact the third feature film from Brunner, a 35-year-old Austrian director who was, as it turns out, a student of Haneke’s at the Vienna Film Academy. If one’s old professor happens to have two Palme d’Ors and an Oscar lying around,...

Exclusive: Paris-based company also sees Iffr programmer Inge de Leeuw join as acquisitions manager.
Paris-based Stray Dogs has acquired world sales rights to Indian director Anurag Kashyap’s thriller Psycho Raman (Raman Raghav) [pictured] ahead of its premiere in Cannes parallel section Directors’ Fortnight.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui stars as Raman, a serial killer who sees his alter ego in rookie borderline cop Raghav and sets his sights on making him turn bad.
“It’s elevated bad-ass and, for sure, one of the edgiest and coolest films in the selection. I’d been scouting the film for a while and saw a first-cut in Mumbai in December,” said Stray Dogs founding chief Nathan Fischer.
Fischer, who launched Stray Dogs at the beginning of 2015, first met Kashyap while interning at the Indian Film Festival in Los Angeles.
