The Obsidian Curse

Well... It doesn't look as cheap comiccon cosplay as some of his movies do, so that's a positive thing I can say about it.

But Perez (and he's done it on a few films) has taken to adding an effect that looks like a light leak form an improperly mounted lens on 35mm film and he uses that effect to an annoying amount in this film.

But then again it could just be that he didn't mount the lens properly or, maybe used a wide angle without a lens hood. Either way you get a lot of it.

And the sound is worse than most of his films in that hollow and awful kind of way.

Honestly not that much happens. You get to see a whole bunch of hands in Halloween rubber gloves and heads in rubber masks. For a while you think it is cosplay... but it's not. At least at one point they actually say "I thought it was a Halloween mask but it's not." So, you know, at least they recognize it.

Movies like this, well, nudity, gore, humor, those are the tropes that get people to watch them, and they are lacking in almost every point...

...however, there is a prerequisite to these films. It has to do with the female lead. Generally they are called SCREAM QUEENS and that is a title that comes with the role for a reason... they have to be able to actually scream.

Not here, oh no, this is a Perez film, I'm guessing that question was never asked in the auditions... "Could we hear you scream?" And it certainly wasn't coached on screen.

So what you have is a Scream Queen that sounds more forced than my wife's encounter with a spider. At least when she sees a Daddy Long-legs, there is a legitimate element of fear that comes with the scream... but not in a Perez film, that would make the rubber masks seem a little too believable.

More like a nightmare touch to be honest (and no pun intended of course). Good looking cast, well shot and a horror icon to boost (the one and only Reggie Bannister from Phantasm fame).

Still there are certain things that do not gel really good in the overall acting department. But the monster make up and other things make up for that (sorry for the pun). The story is predictable, but still fun to follow, if you have a heart for low budget movies ... up to you to decide if that is the case.

Rene Perez makes movies with topless girls so that tweens will watch his films so that he can scrape a little money together for his next big flop. Just skip his movies and save yourself the trouble of wasting your life on this trash.

One of my general rules is that I don't rate something only one star out of ten unless it's so disjointed that it doesn't even deserve to be called a movie. And, unfortunately, I think that applies here. The writing is bad. The cinematography is horrible. The special effects are dismal, like just about everything else. I even normally like bad movies, but just not this kind of bad. Even slideshows are broken down into an outline that tries to make some sense, but this doesn't bother with that. You get random drug scenes and lens flares and the thinnest of ridiculous plots. It's such a shame, because both Karin Brauns (Blair) and Nicole Stark (Kitty -- who is arguably the second most important character but is not even named on the main cast list because they chose to go alphabetically instead of by order of importance) should have had solid modeling careers if nothing else (and maybe they did, I don't know). I'm not dissing them as actresses, because a lot of that depends on the director, Rene Perez, and they clearly got no usable instructions from him. For how bad everything is, you'd think that it was his first movie but, no, he has a long list of equally bad films to his name, before and after this monstrosity. His page on IMDB even says he does the music, which, of course, explains why that also was no good. He strikes me as one of those people that's so incompetent he has no clue just how bad he is and refuses to listen to anyone else. His films are worth looking up just so you know to avoid them at all costs.
