Watch cooking shows? Love cooking?
Want to learn why New Haven, CT is home to 3 of the best pizza restaurants in the world? This movie will make you salivate over something as simple as pizza. Is it simple? Is it the water? Is it the oven?
Get the family together and make your own pizza and sit down while it's hot and watch the movie. It is so fun to learn the history, see the colorful characters and you will be transported to New Haven with every bite.
APIZZA yum! I was introduced to it in 2000 and make a pilgrimage to New Haven several times a year. Pepes, Sally's or Modern everyone has a favorite. Mine... Pepes
I think it is time to go back and do the taste test!
Enjoy...

"Pizza, A Love Story" is a documentary about pizza in New Haven -- specifically, the "Holy Trinity" of Pepe's, Sally's, and Modern. And I couldn't imagine a more fitting title. The love was clear (as well as contagious), and the storytelling was expert.
The doc is a perfect blend of facts, memories, and unapologetic opinions (often boastfully declared as fact, to be sure lol.) The personal stories bring you right into the hearts and souls of the families behind the pizzerias as well as all the local community members and celeb visitors who fervently declare their favorites. It's witty and whimsical and devout in its attention to detail, and if you know anything about New Haven or NH-style abeetz,, it's an extra treat to watch. I really didn't want it to end.
This documentary is a love letter -- to pizza, to a rich local history, to giving everything you've got to work that you love. Whether that's making pizza or making a movie about making pizza.

I was expecting exclusively a documentary about the three pizzerias themselves, but this film has a bunch of extra toppings included. The film also explores the immigration experience of many Italian and other immigrants who took factory jobs and how pizza was one of the foods they could reasonably afford (a tradition that remains for many college students). The film continues with the gentrification of slum neighborhoods through eminent domain and how pizza continued to unite the people displaced from their homes.
It is a must see.

This documentary did a fabulous job of capturing both the heart of Connecticut and the value of three families who created food history. Definitely worth a watch!
You would be hard pressed to travel far in New Haven County, Connecticut and not find a Pizza Parlor. As this wonderful Documentary tells us, the "Big Three" are located within just six blocks of each other and most every pizza connoisseur in the area favors one of them.
The film covers much, from Italian immigration into New Haven in the early twentieth century, to the families that started these three iconic pizza eateries. We learn about them and along the way transition through the years to today's Pizza makers. Appearances by Henry Winkler, Lyle Lovett, Michael Bolton and others along with great commentary by area locals make this both a fun and informative work.
In the end it's the great story telling by the films creators that brought this one home for me!
FYI; My personal favorite, Modern Pizza.
