Avis à la une
Malayalam cinema has been struggling hard to mix the new wave genre into its repertoire, and while we have seen a couple films make it, this one comes out as a surprise package.
Bhanu (Sreenivasan) is a college student in dire straits who tries to help a damsel Adhishta Lekshmi (Pramod) enter a boys hostel (where he also lives) in return for money, and gets trapped with her in his room, unable to get out. The stage is set, and amid royally embarrassing spelling mistakes and editing blunders, Bhanu is helped by his three mates, who go from plan A through at least plan P to get Adhishta out.
At first look, the story looks kinda flimsy, but if one waits and anticipates Madhav, Varghese, Mukesh, and Mohan's characters to enter the scene, things start to look good. The humor and slapstick, although partially adult, is fantastic. One could also relate with the slang used in the dialogs and the parlance used by hostel students. Having said that, lot of cuss words are thrown around here, but they are supposed to be funny, and trust me, they are. (And there is a weed plant growing in a pot somewhere, which is ballsy.)
If you snub the logic a little, then the film is real gold, especially the final 30 minutes that is more horror than comedy. And the climax is simply unpredictable for what you expect. Direction and screenplay are nicely handled, and I must say I will be definitely waiting for the sequel, which would be interesting to watch as the tables now seem to have turned. Also, Pramod has to be lauded for playing what seems like the only female character in a hostel high on testosterone.
BOTTOM LINE: Adi Kapyare Kootamani is a very good effort from amateurs, and it is because of the lead actors and an inventive reworked story that makes it a wonderful watch. Ignore the long running time, grab a bowl of popcorn, and enjoy this caper.
GRADE: B-
Can be watched with a typical Indian family? Maybe.
Vulgarity: High

The movie is happening almost entirely inside a men's hostel. There are fun moments throughout the movie. Not LMAO moments but lots of lol moments and it will not bore you from beginning till the end. All the actors were really good, even the guys who came for few seconds. There was a hint why the old lady keeps ringing the bell, but should have given a better explanation on that. Bollywood can make good money if they remake this with some known young actors.
Sorry i had to rate this as 1. The movie is really good, but not a family entertainer. We went with our child and he was horrified by the last scene (the scary face). There was no need of such a scene in the movie as till that time, the script was so fine and kids were just laughing and enjoying. Even the ghost part - they were loving it as it was so funny.
Its been more than a month that we have seen the movie. My child is still on the shock of that scary face and he is now afraid of darkness. Yesterday too he was saying he was seen bad guys in darkness and he needs lights on for sleeping.
The director should have the COMMON SENSE of avoiding this as it was like a family entertainer and the kids were laughing to it.

I wished I would write the first review of the year on an excellent and amazing movie. But I did not wait for the same because I want to share the horrible experience I have gone through. There was a lot of hype and mouth publicity about the movie, I am not understanding what has happened to these people. Please read with patience the review on Adi Kapyare Kootamani.
Dhyan Srinivasan lacks a lot as an actor, he is still at his naive form trying to imitate his brother Vineeth Srinivasan in mannerism and dialogue delivery. I was hugely surprised that this movie came from Friday Film House (Sandra Thomas and Vijay Babu) who funds innovative and out of the box themes. Director John Varghese deserves no mercy and I am going ahead with one out of five star for this highly proclaimed stupid slapstick comedy.

Recently, the Kannada film Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare received mixed reviews. Around the same time, I came across this movie.
This one is also set in a hostel but with a different twist-while Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare revolves around getting rid of a dead warden's body, here, the challenge is sneaking a girl out of the hostel!
Though the climax feels a bit odd, the film is filled with laugh-out-loud moments. The warden, who believes all the boys are well-behaved, the sneaky assistant warden Shanthappan, and the hero's friends-Koshi, Bruno, and Remo-keep the comedy flowing. Meanwhile, Adhishta Lakshmi and Bhanu Prasad make you feel sorry for them.
Oh, and there's also a mysterious old lady-why is she mysterious? You'll have to watch the movie to find out!
Final Verdict: Whether you liked Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare or not, this one is definitely worth a watch!
