Several of the dragons are inspired by different type of animals. Gronckles, such as Meatlug, are based on Bulldogs. Stormfly has a lot of aspects of a parrot. Toothless is inspired by cats, mainly a panther.
In late 2016 in an interview with a podcast, a writer for Dragons : Par-delà les rives (2015) confirmed that Netflix ordered two more seasons, giving Dragons : Par-delà les rives (2015) six seasons instead of its original four.
Tuffnut's fierce and protective loyalty towards his pet chicken is a reference to the Viking-inspired computer game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Due to a glitch in that game, if players kill a chicken in a village, the entire populace will try to murder them in revenge.
During the course of the series we see Hicup developing the 1st generations of his flame sword and his glide wings.
David Tennant who voices Spitelout, Snotlout's father, also voiced the audio books in the How to Train Your Dragon series.
