All the hard yards are here?

Not sure why it has such a low score from the critics compared to the popcorn audience. I enjoyed it. Found it believable. Maybe it's too real. Making a champion is simple. But the simplest things can be difficult. And boring to watch perhaps. Perhaps it's just a little too British? Especially the ending. If you love sports biographies, it's worth a watch.

Good acting

Interesting story about early boxing in England .

Ray Winstone , Russel Crowe , I bet a few pints were drank on the set .

I think it was ok but was not blown away , I think could have been a bit better .

Rocky IV this is not

I take my hat of to Matt Hookings for righting and directing this but it's been done before and better, standard plot line and I didn't overly care for his character. Ray Winston does a great turn as Ray Winston (no harm, no foul 😃) but Cinderella Man or million Dollar baby had me both heavily invested in characters and in tears at points, this has neither. Watchable.... But an historical mess

It's well acted, well shot and the score is excellent but it's very confused as a historical account of early 19th century boxing.

The fight between Belcher and Pearce would not have been fought with gloves, nor would it have had timed rounds. It would have been fought under London prize ring rules since it was about 60 years away from the Marquis of Queensbury changing the game.

Worth watching

Pretty good film, good story, some great acting - especially by Winstone - but it doesn't inspire you or evoke emotion like Cinderella Man. Still recommend it though.

When Belcher triumphed over Bartholomew in a 17-round rematch in 1800, he was hailed as the new champion. In 1803, Belcher lost sight in one eye when he was struck by the ball in a game of racquets. ... Perhaps Belcher should have retired to his pub, The Jolly Brewer, after the Pearce defeat. James 'Jem' Belcher was one of the most admired prizefighters of the Regency. He was renowned for his handsome looks, impeccable manners and eccentric boxing style which involved telling jokes to his opponents at the bloodiest moments of combat. He was defeated by the rising talent, Tom Cribb in 1807 and again in 1809, leading to his retirement soon after. His many victories inspired Egan's famous history of bare-knuckle fighting, Boxiana (1812). William Hazlitt, an ardent fan, fondly recalled him in his famous essay The Fight (1821).
