As we write this, four superhero movies have been officially announced and dated for 2027. Those are Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Man of Tomorrow, The Batman Part II, and Avengers: Secret Wars.
That's going to be a stacked second half of the year!
While it's admittedly still very early, we probably know equally as much about each of these future blockbusters. With that in mind, now seems as good a time as any to rank 2027's Marvel and DC offerings from least to most anticipated.

Yesterday, DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn announced Man of Tomorrow, the highly anticipated next chapter in his Superman Saga...that's also a Peacemaker season 2 sequel?
The filmmaker has repeatedly said that Peacemaker is a direct Superman follow-up, though there was nothing in the five episodes we watched to suggest that's the case. Gunn is keeping the final three chapters under wraps, deciding that they shouldn't be sent out to critics to preserve what's been hyped up as some massive surprises.
Teasing tonight's third episode of Peacemaker, Gunn said, "Watch the Man of Tomorrow Prequel Aka #Peacemaker Season 2, airing a new episode tonight on @HBOMax."

As we near three years since DC Studios was launched, many fans can't help but express frustration at the lack of progress on The Brave and the Bold. Batman remains DC's most popular character, and on the surface, a Batman and Robin story shouldn't be that tough to figure out.
There's already some scepticism surrounding the project thanks to the decision to have The Flash director Andy Muschietti take the helm. James Gunn hailed that as one of the greatest superhero movies ever made; fans and critics didn't agree.

The new trailer has just premiered for Jafar Panahi’s latest film It Was Just An Accident which won the prestigious top prize (Palme d’Or) at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Neon will release the film in theaters on October 15.
From master filmmaker Jafar Panahi comes a searing moral thriller that engages with complex ideas about the uncertainty of the truth and the choice between revenge and mercy, as Panahi turns his personal dissonance into a profound and galvanizing work of art.
With the acclaimed film’s recent Palme d’Or win at Cannes, Panahi has now completed the European festival triple crown, having won the top prize at all three major European film festivals – Venice, Berlin, and Cannes – over the course of his career. He previously received the Golden Lion in Venice for The Circle and Berlin’s Golden Bear for Taxi, becoming only the fourth director to ever achieve this distinction.

The 30th Busan International Film Festival has selected the director Jafar Panahi as ‘The Asian Filmmaker of the Year’. The award is presented to an Asian film figure or organization that has made the most significant contribution to the development of the Asian film industry and culture.
As a towering figure in Iranian cinema, the director has explored the existence and freedom of individuals living amid censorship and political repression. Capturing the political and social contradictions of Iranian society from a countercultural perspective, he has continued to create films in secret, courageously submitting them to international film festivals despite repeated arrests, custody, detention, travel bans, and a stated-imposed filmmaking ban. Jafar Panahi has been tapped for the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award at the 30th Busan International Film Festival, cementing the Iranian director’s status as one of cinema’s most defiant voices.
The recognition follows Panahi’s Palme d’Or victory at Cannes 2025 for “It Was Just an Accident,” making him the first Asian filmmaker to capture the top prize at all three major European festivals. His previous triumphs include Venice’s Golden Lion for “The Circle” in 2002 and Berlin’s Golden Bear for “Taxi” in 2015.
What makes Panahi’s achievement particularly remarkable is that he’s accomplished it while operating under severe restrictions. The 65-year-old filmmaker has been banned from making movies by Iranian authorities and has faced multiple arrests, detentions and travel prohibitions. Yet he continues crafting films in secret and getting them to international festivals.

Full Circle Fame Netflix’s newest binge-worthy reality series, ‘Building the Band’, is making waves- and not just for its format. A spiritual successor to the boy band boom of the early 2010s, the show tries to recreate the accidental lightning-in-a-bottle that gave us One Direction, but with a twist: it’s curated by the contestants themselves, not producers or celebrity judges. It’s a modern take on an old formula, an intentional attempt to recreate the kind of moment when Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger saw potential in five solo auditioners and formed a global phenomenon. The presence of the late Liam Payne as a mentor adds emotional weight and legacy to the series. Shot before his tragic accident, his return alongside Scherzinger feels like a farewell, a tribute, and a baton-passing all at once. The series even opens with a quiet dedication to the One Direction star- making...

Don’t look now, but it seems Netflix might have just canceled one of its most popular reality shows!
Netflix has been known to keep fans in the dark on the status of some of its unscripted programs, with new seasons randomly dropping without much notice. This makes it hard to know when a show has been officially canceled or is simply taking a longer-than-expected hiatus. However, the evidence is starting to pile up that Netflix has canceled The Circle after seven seasons.
Following its fifth season, Netflix renewed The Circle for two additional seasons in November 2023. This paved the way for season 6 to be released in April 2024 and season 7 to drop in September of that same year. However, we’re closing in on a year removed from season 7’s release, and there has been absolutely from Netflix or any reputable source announcing The Circle’s renewal.

From her time starring as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies to being a model for shoots, Watson’s career in Hollywood has been put on pause, but not her income.

Netflix’s latest reality offering, Battle Camp, represents an ambitious attempt to consolidate the streaming giant’s reality television ecosystem into a single competitive arena. Hosted by former NFL player Taylor Lewan, the series transplants 18 contestants from across Netflix’s reality portfolio—The Mole, Squid Game: The Challenge, Too Hot to Handle, The Circle, Perfect Match, and others—into a wilderness setting that splits the difference between summer camp nostalgia and survival competition.
The premise is deceptively simple: three teams of contestants compete for a $250,000 prize through physical challenges while managing the complex social dynamics that define modern reality programming. What distinguishes Battle Camp from its predecessors is its rotating cast system, where eliminated contestants are continuously replaced by new players, creating a narrative structure that resists traditional character development in favor of perpetual instability.

Netflix is about to launch another game show, this one promising “strategy, suspense and jaw-dropping prizes.”
Neil Patrick Harris will host What’s In The Box, described as a “high stakes game show” where contestants participate in a “massive guessing game where every decision could lead to life-changing rewards.” It’s expected to launch in December.
Here’s the official logline for the first 6 episodes that each run 45 minutes: “Giant boxes conceal jaw-dropping prizes, wild surprises and unexpected reveals in What’s in the Box, a high-stakes arching game show that tests smarts, strategy and stamina. Over several episodes, pairs of contestants face off in fast-paced, addictive trivia rounds, racing to correctly guess what’s inside each box. But winning a prize is just the beginning. As the game unfolds, shifting alliances and unexpected twists mean only those with sharp instincts — and a little luck — will hold onto their winnings and claim victory.

Neon’s latest Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner, It Was Just An Accident from Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi will open October 15 in theaters in North America, setting the film up for an awards campaign in categories including Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay and International Film. The latter, however, might be in question as it seems unlikely that Panahi’s film, which is critical of Iran’s government and treatment of its citizens, would be selected by the country as its official Oscar entry for the International Feature Film competition.
Following the pattern Neon head Tom Quinn explained to me for Deadline’s Cannes Disruptors issue in May, this film, which marks the sixth consecutive Palme d’Or win for Neon, will follow what he openly calls his “playbook” and emulate the release pattern employed for the company’s past two Palme d’Or/Oscar Best Picture winners, 2024’s Anora and 2019’s Parasite.

Jafar Panahi’s Cannes winner “It Was Just an Accident” will be released in theaters this fall. Neon has dated the movie for theatrical release on Oct. 15.
The film marks the Iranian auteur’s first feature since being released from prison in Iran and was directly inspired by his incarceration. “It Was Just An Accident” follows what begins as a minor accident, which sets in motion a series of escalating consequences. The story centers on five characters who think they’ve identified the prosecutor who tortured them during their own arrests — but as they were all blindfolded in jail, none can be entirely certain their captive is the same man.
“When you spend eight hours a day blindfolded, seated in front of a wall, being interrogated by someone standing behind your back every day, you can’t stop wondering what kind of conversation you can have with this man,” Panahi...

When Jafar Panahi was awarded the Palme d’Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, it felt less like a career milestone and more like a collective sigh of justice served. For over a decade, Panahi has been making films under a state-imposed ban, facing imprisonment, surveillance, and the systematic stripping of his freedoms. Yet his cinema never ceased. With works smuggled out of Iran, made in secret or in confined spaces, Panahi turned censorship into his canvas, crafting films that spoke in whispers and still managed to shake the world.
Amid this legacy of cinematic resistance, Sreemoyee Singh’s “And, Towards Happy Alleys” (2023) stands as one of the most poignant tributes ever made to Panahi’s life and art. What begins as a doctoral research trip from Kolkata to Tehran evolves into a journey of solidarity across boundaries, both cultural and ideological. Iranian director Jafar Panahi, who recently won the Cannes Palme d’Or for his anti-regime drama “It Was Just an Accident,” has launched an impassioned appeal on Instagram that appears to push for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to be toppled amid escalating conflict with Israel.
Panahi in an Instagram post called on the United Nations and the global community “to immediately and decisively force the two regimes” to “halt military attacks and end the killing of civilians.”
However Panahi, who is currently in an undisclosed location outside of Iran, also wrote: “The only way to escape is the immediate dissolution of this system and [to] initiate a people’s responsive and democratic government.”
“I have no doubt about this clear and non-negotiable point and I have stated my position explicitly and will say it again: an attack on my homeland, Iran, is in no way acceptable. Israel has...

Kevin Huvane, one of Hollywood’s most powerful and respected agents, happened to be in New York City about 32 years ago with client and friend Demi Moore when the movie star suggested an introduction to someone “really, really special” in her life.
The first name that came to Huvane’s mind was the man most closely associated with Moore at the time, Bruce Willis. Nope, not him. “You had already had Rumer and I met her already,” Huvane recalled, referencing the eldest of Moore’s three daughters with ex-husband Willis. Turns out it wasn’t a relative, a fellow movie star or even an auteur. Over dinner at Nobu in New York, Moore introduced Huvane to that special someone, whom she described has having the credentials of an impressive multi-hyphenate: “a friend, a guidance counselor, a psychiatrist, a therapist and a healer.”

Iranian dissident filmmaker Jafar Panahi won the Palme d’Or on Saturday for “It Was Just an Accident,” a revenge drama he shot clandestinely while officially barred from filmmaking at home. Accepting the prize at the Cannes Film Festival, the 64-year-old director dedicated the award “to all Iranians” and expressed hope for a day “when no one will tell us what to wear or do,” a clear reference to Iran’s restrictive dress and speech rules.
Panahi’s victory caps a career defined by defiance. In 2010 he received a six-year prison sentence and a 20-year ban on directing, yet he continued to make films in secret and smuggle them abroad on flash drives. “It Was Just an Accident,” only the second Iranian film ever to claim Cannes’ top honor after Abbas Kiarostami’s “Taste of Cherry” in 1997, follows a garage owner who confronts the man he believes tortured him in prison.

Dissident Iranian director Jafar Panahi has won the Palme d’Or for best film for It Was Just an Accident at the 78th Cannes international film festival.
Panahi, who just a few years ago was imprisoned in Tehran and under a 20-year travel and work ban, returned triumphantly to Cannes, accepting his award from jury president (and vocal Panahi fan) Juliette Binoche.
Panahi’s film, his first since being released from prison in 2023, is a direct assault on Iran’s authoritarian regime. The thriller follows a former political prisoner who kidnaps a man he believes to be his torturer and then debates with other dissidents whether to kill or forgive him.
The win marks the sixth time in a row a film acquired by Neon for North America has won the Palme d’Or. Tom Quinn’s indie outfit kept its Cannes streak going by picking up It Was Just an Accident earlier this week.

With the rise of avant-garde filmmakers in the 1960s, Iran’s New Wave emerged, marked by the works of pioneers like Ebrahim Golestan, Farrokh Ghaffari, Hajir Darioush, and Forough Farrokhzad.
Later, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the cinematic contributions of Dariush Mehrjui, Sohrab Shahid-Saless, Arby Ovanessian, and Nasser Taghvai breathed new life into Iranian cinema. These filmmakers rejected the commercial, formulaic productions of the mainstream industry, instead embracing a more authentic portrayal of social realities.
At a time when Iran was on the brink of revolution and political tensions were high, the New Wave stood in stark contrast to the escapist, dreamlike narratives of studio films, which were often inspired by Indian, Turkish, and Egyptian cinema, paying little attention to the country’s sociopolitical landscape. Key to the New Wave were two elements: modernist narrative structures influenced by European cinema and a focus on social issues, informed by socialist realism and leftist ideologies.

Exclusive: Neon has picked up North American rights to Jafar Panahi’s well-received feature It Was Just an Accident, which had its world premiere in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this week.
It Was Just an Accident has a one-line synopsis that reads: “What begins as a minor accident sets in motion a series of escalating consequences.” The film, which has been one of the best-reviewed movies at the festival, deals in a fictional way with past wrongfully incarcerated working-class people seeking revenge against the guard who tortured and berated them. In his review, Deadline’s Pete Hammond called the movie “a powerful statement for humanity” that “serves as a warning that you better watch your back.”
The Wednesday afternoon screening was met with a 10-minute ovation — and was highly significant because Panahi himself was in attendance, marking the first time he has been able to appear at the festival in over 20 years.

For the first time in over two decades, acclaimed Iranian director Jafar Panahi spoke to the press at the Cannes Film Festival — not remotely from house arrest in Tehran but as a free man. At the press conference for his competition film It Was Just an Accident, Panahi reflected on his long-awaited return to the Croisette and the weight of representing those who remain silenced in Iran.
This year’s Cannes marks Panahi’s first appearance at the festival since 2003, when Crimson Gold won the Un Certain Regard prize.
Panahi has only recently been able to travel, after, in February 2023, he was released from prison, following a hunger strike. A 2010 conviction, which banned him from travel as well as from filmmaking, was overturned. Suddenly, Panahi could work and move as he wished.
“It took some time for me to get back on my feet and get back to work,” said Panahi.

Panahi has only recently been able to travel, after, in February 2023, he was released from prison, following a hunger strike. A 2010 conviction, which banned him from travel as well as from filmmaking, was overturned. Suddenly, Panahi could work and move as he wished.

Dissident Iranian director Jafar Panahi struck a chord with “It Was Just an Accident,” one of his most political movies, and his first film since being released from jail in Iran. The movie, which marks his comeback in competition at Cannes seven years after “Three Faces,” was greeted with a nearly eight-minute standing ovation at its premiere on Tuesday.
After the roaring applause died down, Panahi made an emotional speech in which he paid homage to the filmmakers who are currently imprisoned in Iran, saying he felt some guilt upon being released from prison. “I turned around and saw a very high wall. And behind this wall, all these other loved ones, all these people remained behind this wall,” he said. “So I wondered how I could be happy, how I could feel free, if they were still inside.”
He continued: “Today, I’m here with you, I receive this joy,...

Take heed: Jafar Panahi is no longer the filmmaker he once was, transforming from understated humanist (in films such as “The White Balloon” and “Offside”) to open critic of the Iranian regime, as revealed in his punchy new political thriller, “It Was Just an Accident.” The greatest irony of that change is that Panahi may never have become so explicitly defiant of his persecutors if the system itself had not tried to crack down as harshly as it did. Arrested multiple times for so-called propaganda and locked up on two occasions (released only after he went on hunger strike), Panahi can’t help making art, emerging fired up and ready to fight back.
The same is true for the five characters in “It Was Just an Accident,” who’ve assembled almost like the diamond thieves in “Reservoir Dogs” post-heist to point fingers and dispense justice. Strange as it may sound...

Dissident Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi on Tuesday walked up the Montées des Marches steps of the Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet for the world premiere of his surreptitiously shot new film “It Was Just an Accident, marking a historic moment that follows a 14-year ban on making films, giving interviews and travelling abroad.
Panahi – who is known globally for prizewinning works such as “The Circle,” “Offside,” “This is Not a Film,” “Taxi,” and most recently “No Bears” – was arrested in 2023 in Tehran in the wake of the country’s conservative government crackdown and incarcerated for nearly seven months on charges of “propaganda against the system.”
His ban was lifted by Iranian authorities in April 2023. Panahi’s presence in Cannes appears to be a signal to the outside world that Iran is, at least cosmetically, changing its course amid escalating tensions following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September...

Iranian director Jafar Panahi, who is considered one of the country’s greatest living film masters, is in Cannes with his latest film “It Was Just an Accident,” marking his first project since being incarcerated for several months in 2023 for criticizing the Iranian government.
In 2010, the auteur — known globally for prizewinning works such as “The Circle,” “Offside,” “This is Not a Film,” “Taxi” and most recently “No Bears” — was banned from making movies, speaking to the press and traveling, though he surreptitiously kept making them anyway. The ban was lifted in April 2023, and now Iranian authorities have allowed him to travel to Cannes to launch “It Was Just an Accident.”

Jafar Panahi was not born a dissident filmmaker. He never strived to become one. He had the mantle of dissident artist thrust upon him by the regime in Tehran.
In 2009, after Panahi attended the funeral of a student killed in the so-called Green Revolution protests, the government banned him from leaving the country. In 2010, citing his plans to shoot a film with the protests as a backdrop, the government slapped him with a 20-year ban on travel and filmmaking along with a six-year suspended prison sentence for “propaganda against the system.”
Panahi was famous in international art house circles before the ban — The White Balloon (1995) won Cannes’ Camera d’Or for best first feature, The Circle (2000) earned Venice’s Golden Lion for best film — but it was after the ban that the mainstream press took notice.
