Back in October, I got my hands on the Special Edition of Nighthawk Interactive’s Halloween and Ash vs Evil Dead RetroRealms Double Feature. I mean, I preordered that baby, desperate for all the goodies and collectibles, plus games centering around two of my favorite horror franchises, despite my innate resistance toward 2D action platformers. The games are fine, probably great if you’re a fan of that genre, though the novelty of a pixel art-styled sidecroller with 16-bit visuals where I got to play as Ash and Michael Myers was enough to leave me satisfied with my purchase.
After all, I love video games, especially horror video games, though known properties are rarely adapted as anything other than asynchronous multiplayer titles. I tried Friday the 13th: The Game, hated the matchmaking, and thus never even bothered to try my hand at Evil Dead: The Game, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,...

Plot: Murdered bounty hunter Hub Halloran is resurrected by the Devil to trap and send back demons that have escaped from the prison of Hell. By chasing down those demons with the help and hindrance of his estranged family, Hub learns how his own sins got his soul condemned — which pushes him to seek a second chance at life, love, and country music.
Review: There have been a lot of series over the years that have tried to combine horror and comedy. When you throw in the idea of a protagonist being enlisted to hunt down demons and send them back to Hell, you can count the 1998 Fox series Brimstone and the 2007 CW show Reaper amongst similar concepts. Even Ash vs. Evil Dead had a good balance of the genres, though it did lean more towards comedy, unlike the grim Brimstone. Striking the right amount of levity and chills can...

The most popular subgenre of horror nowadays is “elevated horror”; you know, the kind of movies where there’s more focus on themes and social commentary, and fear is induced via metaphors and not through disgusting visuals. And I like some of them. But, gun to my head, if I have to say what my favorite subgenre of horror is, I think it’s going to be those that are categorized as horror B-movies. There’s something about the wacky camerawork, jarring editing, cheap production design, gross special effects, and an odd mixture of earnestness and self-awareness that I really enjoy. I am talking about stuff like Horror Express, Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead films, the Friday the 13th movies, and almost every other George A. Romero flick. With everything becoming more and more polished, even the emulation of those raw and crude aesthetics feels “safe.” So, how well does...

Laia Costa will star opposite Jack Reynor (Midsommar) in The Mummy from Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin.
The fresh take on the classic monster is due out on April 17, 2026 from Warner Bros.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Cronin previously said, “This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.”
The project is the first under the recent Blumhouse-Atomic Monster merger, with the companies producing and co-financing for New Line Cinema. James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville are producing alongside Cronin under his Doppelgängers banner.
David Garbett serves as director of photography.

Director Sam Raimi and actor Bruce Campbell have worked on four "Evil Dead" film and TV projects together. I needn't reiterate "The Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn," as the cultists know them well. However, something happened after Raimi and Campbell made "Army of Darkness" in 1992, completing Ash's arc in the process. That film was distributed by Universal, which positioned it to gain a crossover audience. Sadly, though, it didn't do well at the box office, but became a massive cult hit. It was deeply beloved by many, eventually attaining the same canonized status as its immediate forebear.
In his autobiography "If Chins Could Kill," Campbell laid out the difference between a "cult film" and a "blockbuster." A blockbuster is a million people seeing a film 10 times, and a cult film is 10 people seeing a film a million times.

One can indeed watch each installment in Sam Raimi's celebrated "Evil Dead" franchise in the order of their release, but it might not help keep the continuity clear. The actual narrative throughline of the "Evil Dead" movies is a little hazy throughout, and each new movie might serve as a soft reboot of the one that came before it. The ending of one movie doesn't clearly link to the next, and the main character of Ash (Bruce Campbell) doesn't seem to learn or grow from his experiences. Indeed, Ash only appears to get dumber and more selfish with every outing. The already-weak continuity then becomes especially messy when one starts factoring in director's edits and alternate endings that only sort of count toward the franchise's central canon. One can also, if they were ambitious, include short films that Sam Raimi made when he was a teenager. He is an iconoclast.

Samara Weaving is a certified Scream Queen. Although she’s had impactful roles in dramas, comedies (“Bill & Ted Face the Music”), period pieces (“Chevalier”) and even starred in the Aussie soap opera “Home and Away,” she always returns to genre films. From early roles in “Mayhem” and “The Babysitter” to memorable recent turns in “Scream VI” and “Azrael,” Weaving is a frequent highlight of dark projects, able to match both comedic tones and deadly serious narratives.
“Borderline,” in theaters Friday via Magnolia Pictures & Magnet Releasing, finds Weaving in an irreverent mode. The 80s were a time when country music and a type of hero born of the good ol boy class that came into his own. This could be seen in shows like The Dukes of Hazzard, Bj and The Bear, as well as movies like Any Which Way But Loose and Smokey and the Bandit. They were a time of what would be considered fun action films and TV. Again, this was personified in shows where usually no one got seriously hurt, like The A-Team. The bad guys went to the same shooting school as your friendly neighborhood Stormtroopers. But, one TV show that would personify this “nobody better get hurt” adventure series was The Fall Guy.
The series was designed as a vehicle for star Lee Majors, who had become a household name thanks to The Six Million Dollar Man, but struggled to find a worthy follow-up. This would be it,...

The “Evil Dead” movies have been the brainchild of Sam Raimi, who was very much inspired by the works of Hp Lovecraft and the mythology of the “Necronomicon.” The Necronomicon is usually a fictional grimoire appearing in Lovecraft’s horror tales. In the Evil Dead movies, the “Necronomicon Ex-Mortis” is the fictional grimoire usually playing havoc upon a group of unsuspecting inhabitants who chance upon the book (usually in a cabin in the woods) and attempt to read it, causing chaos.
Practical effects usually characterize the “Evil Dead” movies, with ample amounts of gore and a blend of horror and dark comedy, at least in terms of the original trilogy that Raimi directed. The newer versions skew more towards a dark, horror bent, but the gore remains consistent. Also consistent is the protagonist, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), who appears in all five films as well as the television series.

When it comes to major horror franchises, one of the most beloved and consistent from the '80s is The Evil Dead. Whether it be the five theatrical nightmares or the killer Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series, the deadites are an unstoppable bunch of monsters. In terms of films, Evil Dead 2013 brought the franchise into the 21st century in blood-soaked fashion. It’s still arguably the scariest entry to date. Now the dreadful reboot is getting a new 4K steelbook from Scream Factory.

Can you believe it’s been over a decade since Spartacus first brought its blood-soaked, action-packed drama to our screens? Back in 2010, this hit show redefined the historical epics with its unapologetic intense storytelling and raw actions. Though Gladiator and Rome did lay the groundwork for sword-and-sandal greatness, Spartacus intensified the level, delivering four seasons of unforgettable action.

If there’s one thing that Hollywood can’t help themselves following: it’s trends. As soon as something is popular, they want to milk it for all its worth. That’s why, after The Penguin‘s success, the focus is on more Penguin versus just doing another spinoff in the Batman world. And when those execs start to complain about “Penguin fatigue” they’ll have no one to blame except themselves. There’s another trend going on right now and that’s popular horror films being adapted into television shows. The greatest pilot episodes for horror TV shows stand tall in comparison to their peers when they excel at driving the plot forward through genuine scares. Many TV shows start with an initial episode that must achieve the goal of getting the series picked up for a full-season order by a network or streaming service. The pilot also seeks to hook an audience on the series by concisely laying out the show's premise and introducing its main characters while keeping any major reveals under wraps.
A horror series operates in the same fashion but has the added perk of introducing a deadly threat that increases the stakes. This ensures that both the characters and the audience are experiencing distress at the same time. From shows like Yellowjackets to The Walking Dead, the best horror pilot episodes consist of a strategic balance between interesting setups and terrifying scares.

Does Peacock’s new series, ‘Hysteria!’ make the list?
It’s the spooky season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a laugh at the same time.
That’s why I’m pulling out my list of the top 7 horror comedy TV shows you can stream right now – just in time to enjoy Peacock’s newest entry to the genre with “Hysteria!” The new horror comedy series is set during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s when a heavy metal band trying to take advantage of the craze finds themselves at the center of a witch-hunt. If you missed my movie list of top horror comedies, check it out here. And if you’re wondering why I don’t have a list of straight-up scary movies, the reason is simple – I don’t watch them because they terrify me. My babysitter showed me the original “It” when...

Famous horror actor Bruce Campbell is making his return to television horror with the new Peacock series “Hysteria!” The show marks Campbell’s first major horror television role since ending his run on “Ash vs Evil Dead” in 2018. In “Hysteria!,” Campbell plays Chief Dandridge, a police chief investigating strange disappearances in a town gripped by fears of satanic influences.
At 66 years old, Campbell is taking on a very different role than his most famous character, Ash Williams from “The Evil Dead” franchise. Instead of playing an unwitting hero facing supernatural chaos, Chief Dandridge enters as an established authority figure meant to solve the town’s problems. Campbell said this change was an “intriguing contrast” that brought “maturity and gravitas” to his horror work.

Bruce Campbells Hysteria! is his first horror show in years, and it's the perfect follow-up to his fame-making franchise. Campbell is best known for playing protagonist Ash Williams in the classic horror series Evil Dead. Released in 1981, The Evil Dead immediately cemented Campbell as an '80s horror icon, along with writer-director Sam Raimi. Campbell reprised the role in the next two movies, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, then once again returned in 2015 for the spinoff TV show Ash vs Evil Dead.
Now 66 years old, Campbell has to play a different kind of role than college student Ash when taking on horror projects. Having joined the Hysteria! cast, the actor plays the towns chief of police, Dandridge, who is trying to investigate a mysterious disappearance while having run-ins with some local kids who are starting a Satan-inspired band. The Evil Dead saga has taken a lot of twists and turns throughout the years, and what began in a small cabin in the woods is now a full-blown franchise that will see at least two more films at some point in the near future. Though it remains to be seen how those movies will fit into the overall timeline of the series, original star Bruce Campbell says theyre not that complicated to understand, at least, not on the level of Star Wars, which director George Lucas shot out of order something he gladly took a tongue-in-cheek jab at in a recent interview with ScreenRant.
Touching on the future of the Evil Dead franchise, Campbell explained that the sequels will always feature a few Easter eggs that tie back into the original trilogy, thus connecting them all together in some form or fashion, even if they dont necessarily continue the...

Bruce Campbell is mostly known for leading the “Evil Dead” franchise (and for popping up in every Sam Raimi movie since), a role that has proven to be both blessing and curse.
The actor, who now appears in Peacock series “Hysteria!,” told The New York Times that while the “Evil Dead” films and subsequent series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” propelled him to stardom, the franchise’s fans can make him feel a bit boxed in.
“I have nothing but love for the franchise. It’s the gift that keeps on giving. It got me into the business,” Campbell said, adding, “I’m more constricted by fans than the industry.”
Campbell continued, “They’re not going to watch ‘Burn Notice’ because spy shows aren’t their bag. And the guys who watch ‘Burn Notice,’ they’re not necessarily horror fans. You’re going to know me from what you’ve watched me in.

After playing Evil Dead franchise hero Ash Williams on screen for around forty years, spanning three feature films and three seasons of the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell formally retired from the role, saying he’s not physically able to handle the action sequences any longer. But he is still willing to voice the character, as evident from Evil Dead: The Game… and a while back, he said would gladly provide Ash’s voice if there were ever to be an Evil Dead animated series. Franchise creator Sam Raimi has let it be known that he wants to continue making Evil Dead projects with Campbell, and he must have heard Campbell’s answer to the animated series question, because Campbell said more than a year and a half ago that they were actively pursuing the idea. Evil Dead & Halloween Crossover Art Sees Ash Williams vs. Michael Myers With Their Signature Weapons
Evil Dead and Halloween crossover art sees Ash Williams face off against Michael Myers, the duo wielding their signature weapons as they stare each other down. Despite both being part of the horror genre, the two franchises are very different from each other. The Halloween movies are slasher films, which show Michael taking out victims in gory and terrifying ways throughout. In the meantime, the Evil Dead films focus more on both body horror with the existence of Deadites, and comedy in entries like Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness.
Now, Malcolm Semmens has posted crossover art that sees Evil Dead's Ash and Halloween's Michael Myers facing off with their signature weapons. The image shows Ash glaring up at Michael, determined, holding up his chainsaw, while the slasher villain looks down at him, a knife poised to stab downward. Bruce Campbell is a police chief in a small town where evil and madness is starting to take root in Hysteria!. Campbell is arguably best known for his work in the horror genre as Ash Williams in Sam Raimi's Evil Dead franchise, having starred as the character in three films, a post-credits cameo and the three-season TV show continuation, Ash vs. Evil Dead. Beyond the franchise, Campbell has also found acclaim for his work in the horror-comedy Bubba Ho-Tep, the cult classic show The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. and as one of the main stars in the spy comedy Burn Notice across its seven-season run and prequel movie spinoff.
Campbell stars in Hysteria! as Chief Dandridge, the police chief of a fictional small town in Michigan in the 1980s who gets swept up investigating the sudden disappearance of the local varsity quarterback, including the seeming Satanic imagery left behind by the kidnappers.

Ash Vs. Evil Dead Animated Show's Delay Addressed By Bruce Campbell: "Things Like This Take Forever"
Bruce Campbell addresses the delays in the Ash vs. Evil Dead animated series. Campbell is known for his work on the Evil Dead series, which began with The Evil Dead in 1981. Campbell plays the lead role of Ash Williams in the series, who is a college student who is forced to survive after the four people he is vacationing with face demonic possession. Ash remains the lead character in the following two films, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. The Evil Dead was also developed into a TV series, titled Ash vs. Evil Dead, which ran for three seasons.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for his new show Hysteria!, Campbell discusses the status of the Ash vs. Evil Dead animated adaptation. Campbell first confirmed that "[they]'re developing an animated series." The Evil Dead actor did not seem to have concrete updates, however, as to when that series would arrive.

Earlier this year, Bruce Campbell shared that the Evil Dead franchise would officially take on a new form with an animated series in development. For the first time on television since hanging up the chainsaw at the end of Ash vs. Evil Dead in 2018, he also confirmed that he'd reprise his role as horror's grooviest hero Ash Williams for the project, albeit in the recording booth rather than on-screen. The idea is something Campbell and the original trilogy's director Sam Raimi have been trying to line up for some time as a proper continuation of the legacy established by the 1981 classic that started it all. Though, even if the process has since solidified, that doesn't mean it's coming anytime soon.

Samara Weaving is a talented yet somewhat underrated actor whose career began in Australian soap operas before moving to Hollywood productions. Weaving's first starring role outside of television was in the Australian thriller film Bad Girl, released in 2016. Weaving later had roles in popular and critically acclaimed films like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Chevalier.
On television, Samara Weaving had starring roles in Australian dramas like Out of the Blue and in the second longest-running drama series on Australian television, Home and Away. She also appeared in TV series like Ash vs Evil Dead, Hollywood, and Nine Perfect Strangers. Most recently, Samara Weaving had a small role in Scream VI and now stars in the action horror film Azrael, which was released on September 27, 2024. Yet while Weaving has already had a prolific career, for those still unfamiliar with her work, some must-watch television series and movies perfectly showcase Samara Weaving's talent.

Samara Weaving has carved out a niche for herself in Hollywood as an A-list scream queen by appearing in several recent acclaimed horror movies, including 2024's Azrael. After eight years as an actor, Weaving entered the horror genre with 2017's The Babysitter. Although she has landed dramatic roles in award-winning movies like 2017's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and 2022's Babylon, much of Weaving's filmography involves the horror and thriller genre. Many of her horror movie roles have been well-received by critics and audiences alike, giving her one of the most impressive resumes of any modern scream queen.

Last year, Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise was one of the biggest and best horror films of the year, making $147 million at the worldwide box office. Now, it's kicking Deadite ass on Netflix, cementing its place as one of the best entries in the franchise. The Evil Dead films, and the TV spinoff, Ash vs Evil Dead, starring Bruce Campbell, are known for showcasing lots of blood and gore, but predominately except for the very serious 2013 Evil Dead with an over-the-top, humorous slant. Evil Dead Rise was different. It was as dark and serious as you can imagine, and nothing showed it more than the shocking arrival of the Marauder. Even The Last of Us' rat king has nothing on this monstrosity.

As only Bruce Campbells beloved character Ash Williams can say, its flat-out groovy how fast Evil Dead Rise is climbing the Netflix Top 10 chart. The 2023 horror film just dropped Monday, September 23 on Netflix (per Tudum), and its only taken two days for director Lee Cronins contribution to the Deadites dynasty to ascend all the way up to No. 2 on the streaming services Top 10. And given that Halloween is just around the corner, the latest Evil Dead film should thrive during the spookiest of seasons leading up to All Hallows Eve.
It shouldnt be a surprise, though, that Evil Dead Rise is thriving on Netflix. Even without the franchises most beloved character, Ash (Campbell) playing an integral role this time around, fans couldnt get enough of the Necronomicon as moviegoers coming right out of theaters gave the frightening flick a B CinemaScore, which is a fabulous rating for a film from the horror genre.

Evil Dead's timeline takes some unique explanations to place in order. The Evil Dead was the feature directorial debut for Sam Raimi, a gonzo horror/comedy that established the filmmaker as a unique visionary. Raimi directed the first three films in the franchise, which expanded from a group of unwitting friends in a cabin to time travel and magical wars. Since then, the lore of The Evil Dead franchise (and the kill count) has continued to grow. This includes five films and the three-season TV series Ash vs. the Evil Dead, which has been confirmed to all share a universe.

Bruce Campbell has been covered in a lot of fake blood during his years playing Ash Williams in the The Evil Dead franchise. However, in the actors own words, it is not a process that he would ever call enjoyable.
Although Bruce Campbell has now seemingly hung up his chainsaw for good when it comes to on-screen appearances as his iconic character, back in 2016 the actor was back for more Deadite action in the unexpected and very welcome Starz sequel series Ash vs Evil Dead. While speaking to Inverse, the actor explained how the methods used to splatter him with fake blood had become more sophisticated since his early years in the role, but the substance itself was just as repellent as it ever was.
