Biblical, Historical and visually stunning

I haven't considered the name "Amal Neerad" as trustworthy. Also didn't tried to watch his movies first day. The names which made me buy an fdfs ticket of this magnum opus were, Fahadh Faasil & Jayasurya. Yeah, I said "magnum opus". Iyobinte Pusthakam is the career best of cinematographer/director Amal Neerad till date.

I had seen the manhunts from Genesis to Revelations in this movie. Job is a person who can be seen in the Bible. He's wealthy, righteous and was a person who don't hurt anyone, even an ant. But here, Job from Iyobinte Pusthakam is an antonym of Job from the Bible. They'll take the opposite poles when it comes to the characteristics.

And Ivan is the representative of Kane from Bible. Isn't he? Up above at heaven, there's Lasar who's sitting next to god. Down below at earth, Lasar is on the right side of power and money. Dimitri is definitely not Pothifer, but we can relate his wife Rahel to Pothifer's wife. And Aloshy is having the characteristics of Abel and Joseph (from the old testament) at the same time.

The names of Job's 3 sons are taken from the Russian classic novel, "The Brothers Karamazov". Iyobinte Pusthakam is a visual treat from Amal Neerad. I'll name it as the 'visually stunning movie of the year'. Fahadh Faasil performed well as usual and did a great job in action sequences. Jayasurya also made his role memorable. Another actor who should be praised for his performance is Jinu Joseph, who played Ivan. As I said before, cinematography is excellent. Neha Nair and Yakzan Garry Pereira produced good music. But as a period story, Iyobinte Pusthakam lacks the honesty. Amal Neerad preferred style over history.

Malayalam industry is producing wonders using limited budget. If someone ask me 'Bahubali or Iyobinte Pusthakam', I'll prefer Iyobinte Pusthakam.

So guys, Iyobinte Pusthakam is a must watch.

The best period movie in Malayalam, so far

I can safely say this one the best period movie in Lalayalam so far, thanks for Amal Neerad, the director for the effort put in. The casting is top, no complaints, superb performance from all. Lal, Fahad, Jayasurya, Jose... all did their part very well. Stunning visuals, the frames will remain in you for days. Again the magic touch of Amal Neerad. The back ground score well sync with the movie. As with most of Amal Neerad movies, the songs are exceptionally well, and photographed superb. Thanks for the new team of music director and singer. The film is already got enough appreciation from critiques and reviewers. Overall an excellent movie experience. I can safely recommend as a must watch.

Excellent.

I had no idea what the movie was about before I started watching it. But it captures your attention from the word go and doesn't let up till the end. Am truly amazed by each aspect of this movie. The cinematography of course is top notch ... The visuals in each frame and angle of camera is really unique. Every character was built and portrayed really well. The story had so many different layers n sub plots... I think the songs were unnecessary and ruined the pace if the film. I did however love the fact that there was no undue drama in the climax and there were no long drawn dialogs as is typical in most movies. Definitely one of the best Malayalam movies i have seen in a very long time. Kudos to the cast n crew!

Malayalam Film Industry's finest.

If this ain't on your watchlist, you are missing out on a ton. Iyobinte Pusthakam is one of the finest crafted Malayalam movies in the industry's history. The film is a period drama set in a pre independence era focusing on the empires left after by the British after their occupation. This flick focuses on the titular character of Iyob (Lal) who takes upon the mantle of Patriarch of the tea exporting empire left by a former British businessman. The film takes its time in establishing its premises and characters. Cinematography and Direction is spot on. Casting is brilliant as Fahadh Faasil and Jayasurya gets into the shoes of their characters quite effortlessly and gives career defining performances. The 3 songs felt completely out of place . Aside this the movie is one of the finest you will watch in this genre.

it's a visual treat

This movie actually surprised me a bit. Two things I absolutely loved about it - Amal neerad's cinematography and fahad's Aloshey.the creative reconstruction of the Russian novel under the colonial period with the mesmerizing beauty of Munnar as background was totally unexpected. Iyobinte Pustakam gave more space to all the actors to perform as none of them seems to be less important. The movie brings to light some significant socio-political issues of the era highlighted by feudal mindset of Iyob and the rebell inside Aloshey. Lal,who is a proved actor have handled Iyob with ease and perfection. Padmapriya's Rachel is the real twist element in the story and she have done justice with it. This is perhaps the best reply to all the criticisms calling Fahad Fazil a highly typecast actor. The music suits the mood of the movie but could have been made better. The stunning visuals are the best part of the movie which is almost breathtaking. Amal neerad has freed himself from constant trolling over the extended slo-mo scenes. This is surely the best movie of his career so far.

A well crafted stylish Malayalam movie

There are very few Malayalam movies that surprise me with its style. And this is one among them. The movie tells the tale of Munnar in the pre-independence era. I have never seen a movie that picturizes the beauty of Munnar so well. Each frame evokes me a feeling of watching a Hollywood movie. It is difficult to type-cast Amal Neerad's movies, but to me, this one is the best that showcases Amal Neerad's ability as a director. Revenge, adventure, romance, fantasy, revolution; it has everything. I guarantee it would fascinate anyone who loves serious movies.

A Visually Appealing Cliché! ♦ 63%

Amal Neerad is known for his gleaming shots propelled by slow-motion and dramatic exaggeration. As he focuses more on these things to bring about a punching (and sometimes numbing) effect on his audience, he often forgets about the story. Well, in Iyobinte Pusthakam, he slightly manages to differ.

The period is World War II - India. Iyob (or Eyob) (Lal) is what the writers call a converted foreigner. After serving an Englishman for the larger part of his life, he takes over his large empire after his death. The story is about his three children: two mischievous, cruel, and sturdy like himself and the third Aloshy (Fahadh Faasil), diffident and lonesome. After their mother's death, the two sons along with their tyrannical father start ruling their areas while Aloshy runs away far from the maddening environment. He returns later to witness what we have never seen before: an autocratic system in India during the World War.

It is basically a revenge story which takes turns and ends up as a hackneyed plot that most of us have either watched or read before. So, while Neerad has managed to sketch a drama this time, he again loses focus on the niceties. But, then you will notice the small mistakes like typos in English subtitles and goof-ups in the frames. I am ready to forgo these mistakes, all thanks to the screenplay and the thunderous cast performances.

Fahadh is great, as always. From his costumes to his make-up to his style - I was mesmerized. But Jayasurya steals the limelight here, playing a wily tree-cutter who plays with Iyob and his sons' lives. His vindictiveness quotient was maybe at a 100%. Lal, Lena, Padmapriya, and all others were very good - they portray their respective characters gloriously. The first half will excite you a lot, as the screenplay lays the foundation to an ensuing family drama with the War as backdrop. But, the second half moves so quickly, you will stop and stare at the characters' actions. And then all feels like cliché.

Character build is strong, with everyone having distinguishing nuances and stances. But, at the end, even they fall prey to the director's nods. The story spirals into predictability.

Songs were forced, and the film does kiss the genre of romance once in a while, as Isha Sharvani fumbles with talented Fahadh. Climax will make you content, because it is shot and stylized in such a scintillating manner that you will yearn for more. Humour is average.

Moreover, let me take the time to appreciate the language used in the film. You will hear exotic and peculiar pre-Independence words which fancied the characters who spoke them. Where else do you hear that our own rice cake "Puttu" was also known as "Thamban Thoori" at that time?

BOTTOM LINE: The best thing about Neerad's latest venture, produced by Fahadh himself is the tantalizing visuals of India during World War II. It gives insight into how bad and good the lives of Indians were even though the British rule was quickly fading at the start of 1940s. For the story that has been carved or should I say, founded upon it, the film is average. Neerad's fans will love it, and it could be termed the most divisive Malayalam film of the year.

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES

EXCELLENT WORK FROM AMAL NEERAD.....

Great work from the whole team. The story highlights the History of people living in Munnar.

And the formation of communist party in Munnar.

The story also clearly tells the Life of Indian citizen under British rule. Also after the end British rule there is another type of British known as "Nadan British" . The one highlight is the Direction of this movie and also "BGM" plays an important role in this movie.. Everyone performance was excellent. .. OVERALL"A MUST WATCH MOVIE"..

A 'Job' half done

"Iyobinte Pusthakam" derives its name from a story in the Old Testament called "Book of Job" (warning: Wikipedia trivia ahead), which is apparently about a man whose faith God and Satan decided to test by putting him through many sufferings. It looks like Amal Neerad chose this name for his movie, for he was planning to play God (or, rather Satan) to test the audiences' endurance for suffering. But sorry Sir, our faith ain't that strong! The posters and publicity material of "Iyobinte Pusthakam" set a tone for a stylized period drama and knowing Amal Neerad, one doesn't expect anything more than a good looking film with some decent action (with no substance or substance borrowed/stolen from Hollywood). Unfortunately, here one wishes the script was copied from somewhere, for there is absolutely none otherwise and no action either.

The movie starts off with an ad film on Vagamon tourism, followed by some music videos, ads of retro cars, bikes and clothing (it even has a documentary-like montage of World War II) and ends with a demonstration of vintage weapons. Well, its not THAT bad :). The cinematography, for one is breathtaking, the locations are captured beautifully and some shots of graphic violence, though an overkill, are well executed. The costumes, of course way too stylized (for which peasant woman in 40's Kerala, other than Isha Sherwani, would wear an English skirt, I wonder!) lend a charm of the period and English romances. I particularly loved the references to the World Wars, the Royal Indian Navy Mutiny (something I wasn't aware of), the missionary influence and the nascent communism (which, though, looked force fitted for no reason).

But once you get over the visual spectacle after the first few minutes, there is hardly anything to keep one interested in the goings on. The story, which is almost non existent, meanders from here to there, without a direction. There was a point when I thought this was going to turn out to be an adaptation of "Godfather" (the Hollywood one), but no, that would make it too good for the audience, won't it! It just eventually turns into a mess of unconnected events.

There is a nice collection of characters though, all portrayed by competent actors, with some good one liners sprinkled among them. Unfortunately, all of them are left without any strong motive for their actions and their nature. Among the actors, Lal, who portrays the transition from slavery to power to weakness gets the meat of the acting portions. The only other actors who stood out for me were Jayasurya (cos I like him :P), Chemban Vinod and Padmapriya, whose character has been done great injustice by the double meaning references and objectification. Fahad has nothing much to do except one or two decent action moves. Isha Sherwani has the job of looking good, which she is competent at. The only other noticeable performance was from the girl who plays Fahad's tribal friend's wife (don't know her name). She has really expressive eyes and stood out in the 2-3 scenes she was in.

The music and especially the background score is pitch perfect. But the songs, especially a totally unwanted item number by Amala Paul (who BTW, can't dance to save her life), are completely misplaced and just extend the suffering when one is waiting for the movie to somehow end. And that brings me to the one thing that the editor majorly screwed up on - 30 minutes shorter, and I might have disliked it a bit less.

At the end of the day "Iyobinte Pusthakam" is a job half done. Great visuals, great costumes, nice background score, good looking actors, some interesting characters, a few good one liners but absolutely zilch in the form of a script or semblance of a plot. I wish Amal Neerad would get back to pure action in slow motion. At least, then, the slow pace made sense ;).

Edit: It was after a good night's sleep that I realized, that this movie is actually an adaptation of William Shakespeare's "King Lear". With the knowledge, it does feel a little more respectable.
