The Adventures of Captain Alatriste is a Spanish TV series that, while falling short in several technical aspects, offers a fairly entertaining dive into the swashbuckling world of Arturo Pérez-Reverte's famous character. The direction and musical score are serviceable but clearly leave room for improvement, and the same can be said for some of the actors and action scenes, which at times feel underwhelming or unevenly executed.

Despite these flaws, the series succeeds in expanding the Alatriste universe with new characters and fresh adventures. While it doesn't reach the cinematic quality of the 2006 film adaptation, nor does it define the characters with the same depth or nuance, it still manages to capture the spirit of the original novels. The sets are visually appealing, and the historical atmosphere is reasonably well recreated, especially considering the limitations of the show's budget.

One of the show's notable strengths is its fast-paced plot and its focus on entertainment over ideology-something increasingly rare in contemporary Spanish television.
