Major League Baseball teams returned to the field this week for the start of spring training. Grapefruit and Cactus league play has been an annual ritual for more than a century ahead of the spring start of the regular season, but this year there are as many existential questions as fastballs flying through the air.

Some of the uncertainties swirling around America’s (Ex?) Pastime, from the Houston Astros’ widening cheating scandal to significant potential changes to the playoff format, are likely to affect the sport’s TV value in the months ahead, as two significant rights deals are set to be negotiated before they expire in 2021.

The Astros began spring training Thursday with an awkward and not entirely successful press conference. Players and owner Jim Crane addressed the scandal that has come to light over recent months, a brazen scheme (even by baseball’s own pine-tar standards) involving trash cans and video cameras.

The Houston Astros have apologized to a Sports Illustrated reporter for attempting to discredit her story.

Astros owner Jim Crane sent Si reporter Stepehanie Apstein a letter on Saturday apologizing for the team, which initially called her report on assistant general manager Brandon Taubman “an attempt to fabricate a story.”

Taubman made unsettling remarks in the Astros locker room following the team’s victory over the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. Taubman pointedly shouted, “Thank God we got Osuna! I’m so [expletive] glad we got Osuna!” toward reporters, including one who criticized the acquisition of Roberto Osuna, the Houston relief pitcher accused of domestic violence and suspended by Major League Baseball for actions while with another team.

The Astros fumbled their explanation for Taubman’s conduct, at first denying the accuracy of the report, then not making senior executives immediately available to comment. Finally, it fell...

Taubman was ousted for his confrontation with media in the team clubhouse after Houston’s American League Championship Series victory over the New York Yankees. Sports Illustrated reported that Taubman pointedly shouted, “Thank God we got Osuna! I’m so [expletive] glad we got Osuna!” toward a gaggle of reporters, including one who criticized the acquisition of Roberto Osuna, the Houston relief pitcher accused of domestic violence and suspended by Major League Baseball for actions while with another team.

Hinch to condemn the Taubman comments. A Mlb investigation was also conducted, and then, finally, the Astros severed ties with Taubman.
