Para-shuttler Mandeep Kaur becomes world No.1 in women's singles SL3 category

New Delhi, March 3 (Ians) Indian Para-shuttler Mandeep Kaur has become the new world no.1 ranked para-badminton player in the Ws SL3 category.

Kaur participated in the recently concluded Spanish Level II Para-Badminton International tournament, which serves as one of the qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, held in Vitoria Gasteiz Spain between 20th-26th February 2023. She clinched a silver medal in the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 category along with her mixed partner Chirag Baretha and also won a bronze medal in the women’s singles SL3 category.

The 28 years old, who hails from Uttarakhand is supported by Welspun Foundation and currently trains at Lucknow under the guidance of Dronacharya awardee Gaurav Khanna, who is also the head national coach of the Indian Para-badminton team and has been training ace players like Palak Kohli, Abu Hubaida, Manoj Sarkar to name a few.

Gandhinagar, Oct 12 (Ians) Table toppers Services completed their National Games campaign in a blaze of glory, winning five gold medals in the boxing ring at the Mahatma Mandir complex here on Wednesday.

While Services sent out five winners from among six boxing finalists, Haryana were left disappointed as only four of their eight pugilists on view on Wednesday emerged winners. With Nikhil Dubey, the lone Maharashtra finalist, claiming an emotional 75kg class gold, the Western Indian state was able to take the second spot on the medal table behind Services, who finished with 61 gold, 35 silver, and 32 bronze medals.

Nikhil Dubey realised his late coach Dhananjay Tiwary’s dreams by pocketing the yellow metal with a 5-0 victory over lesser-known Malsawmitluanga of Mizoram in the men’s middleweight final. Coach Tiwary died in a road accident on Tuesday when on his way here to watch his ward in the final.

National Games boxing: Lovlina, Jaismine, Sanjeet, Hussamuddin storm into boxing finals

Gandhinagar, Oct 11 (Ians) Tokyo bronze medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain and Commonwealth Games medallists Mohammed Hussamuddin and Jaismine Lamboria registered dominating victories to storm into the finals of their respective weight divisions at the 36th National Games here on Tuesday.

Also advancing to their respective finals were Services heavyweight boxer Sanjeet, Punjab’s Simranjit Kaur and Mandeep Kaur, national championship silver medallist duo of Ankit Sharma and Minakshi of Haryana while Assam’s Ankushita Boro set up an exciting Northeastern derby with Manipur’s Alena Thounaojam for the 66kg welterweight category title.

For the home team, both boxers in the fray — Aasifali Asgarali Saiyed and Ruchita Rajput — had to settle for bronze medals after losing their respective bouts.

Thailand Para Badminton: Ramadass, Kaur register impressive wins as India return home with 17 medals

New Delhi, Aug 23 (Ians) Manisha Ramadass and Mandeep Kaur registered impressive wins as the Indian contingent returned home with 17 medals including four gold at the recently-concluded Thailand Para Badminton International 2022 in Pattaya.

According to information received here, Kaur rallied from a game down to defeat reigning world champion Manasi Joshi 22-20, 21-19, 21-14 in women’s singles SL3 finals before Ramadass, the 17-year-old from Chennai, displayed a brilliant game of badminton to pull off a similar win over Japan’s Kaede Kameyama in women’s singles SU5.

Another women shuttler who made a mark at the championships was Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan, who overcame Rachel Choong of England 21-9, 24-22 for the women’s SH6 gold.

Joshi settled for two more silver with her partners Shanthiya V. and Ruthick Raghupathi respectively, in the women’s doubles SL3-SU5 and mixed doubles Sl 3 – Su 5 events.

The recently released Hindi Netflix film Darlings is about a domestic violence survivor who decides to get rid of her husband. Directed by Jasmeet K Reen, Darlings is about Badru (Alia Bhatt), a young Muslim woman who is married to Hamza (Vijay Verma), an alcoholic Ticket Collector. Badru’s mother Shamshu (Shefali Shah) lives in the same building, which is home to several lower middle class families, and she is unable to bear the abuse that her daughter is facing.

Netflix’s “Darlings” contains a hazard warning.

At the film’s end a title card says, “Warning: Violence against women is injurious to health.” It’s a lesson learned firsthand by Hamza (Vijay Varma) when his wife Badru (Alia Bhatt) holds him hostage in their own home after years of domestic abuse.

Directed by Jasmeet K. Reen and written by Reen and Perveez Sheikh, “Darlings” arrives at a critical moment for South Asian audiences. In July, photographer Sania Khan was found dead in her Chicago apartment in what police ruled to be a murder-suicide perpetrated by her husband after years of abuse. On the same day that “Darlings” screened at a Manhattan theater, domestic abuse victim Mandeep Kaur was found dead in what is now being investigated as a homicide.
