“The Wretched” sequel is happening.

Five years after the film’s original release, Brett and Drew Pierce (“Deadheads”) and their Little Runway Productions will begin production on “The Wretched 2” this September in Oregon, with casting underway.

The Pierce brothers — who are returning as writers, directors and producers — said in a statement to Variety, “Independent horror has been staking out its claim at the box office in the last couple of years with films like ‘Terrifier 3’ and ‘Late Night With the Devil,’ and audiences are craving more from these original stories and voices. It just seems like the right time to bring our Witch back as she was born out of us wanting more from our creature features that we just weren’t getting. We’re going to push this story and the body horror into uncomfortable places.”

IFC Films has unleashed a new trailer for The Wretched. In these uncertain times, horror movies can offer a particular type of comfort that few other, if any other, forms of entertainment possibly can. And since we can't go to movie theaters right now, what with the exhibition business effectively being shut down all around the world, we're left with what's going to be available from the comfort of our homes. Luckily, the latest from directors Brett and Drew Pierce, aka the Pierce Brothers, looks to be the perfect stay-at-home horror flick.

The trailer gets going in a hurry, with a shot of a creature crawling out of a dead animal corpse. We then get a glimpse of the being in its entirety before the daylight comes and the mystery begins to unravel. In her 4.5-star Fantasia review, Sara Clements wrote that The Wretched is "one of the year's best scares," and soon you can meet the movie's witch next door for yourself, as IFC Midnight will unleash the film this May, and we've been provided with a new trailer and poster ahead of its release.

IFC Midnight will release The Wretched in select cinemas (subject to change due to the coronavirus) and on digital and cable VOD on May 1st.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” and “A Quiet Place” split the top sound editing prizes Sunday at the 66th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards. “Bohemian Rhapsody” took Dialogue/Adr and Musical honors while the innovative “A Quiet Place” scored for Effects/Foley at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel.

This sets up a competitive Oscar race down to the wire next Sunday between the two frontrunners. But there’s also a good chance that the popular Freddie Mercury biopic will sweep both categories as a result of its Cas sound mixing victory on Saturday.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” followed up love from Cinema Audio Society sound mixers with a pair of honors at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ 66th annual Golden Reel Awards Sunday night. The musical biopic scored wins for dialogue and Adr as well as sound editing in a musical.

The film is nominated for sound editing at the Oscars along with “First Man” and two other films that received Golden Reel Awards: “A Quiet Place” and “Roma.”

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” also received a pair of awards.

TV prizes went to FX’s “The Americans” and “Atlanta,” Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” HBO’s “Westworld” and Netflix’s “Altered Carbon.”

There were a pair of ties: In feature documentary, “Free Solo” and “They Shall Not Grow Old” locked horns. For episodic short form music/musical work, “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” and “Vikings” ended up in a dead heat.
