You don’t often hear the phrases “feel-good” and “Financial Conduct Authority” in the same sentence. But 2023’s Bank Of Dave was as feel-good as they come, telling the “true-ish” story of David Fishwick (played by Rory Kinnear), a businessman and Burnley bloke who defied the odds and the snooty financial regulators to open a charitable community bank for his fellow Lancastrians. Sentimental and sugary though it was, this was a proper heart-warming Brit-com in the classical mould — a banking-based Brassed Off, a financial-sector Full Monty. Plus, it had a climactic cameo from the band Def Leppard, for some reason.

Now Dave is back, in this latest fictionalised retelling of his BAFTA-winning Channel 4 documentary series, with Chris Foggin returning to the director’s chair. Set in the doldrums of the coalition Lib-Con government, the sting of the 2007-’08 recession not yet faded, the scourge of payday loans suddenly begins...

One of several Netflix productions to come out of the UK, director Chris Foggins comedy-drama tells the story of Dave Fishwick (Rory Kinnear), a millionaire who decides to try and set up his own bank. The reasons he wants to do this are wholesome and well-meaning - its not because he wants to profit, but because he feels that the financial sector in the UK isnt giving people fair treatment.

Exclusive: Samuel Goldwyn Films has locked down North American rights to the British feel-good comedy Bank of Dave, starring Joel Fry (Our Flag Means Death), Rory Kinnear (Men), Jo Hartley (After Life) and Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton). The film featuring music and performances by English rock band Def Leppard is slated for release in theaters and on digital platforms later this year.

Based on the true-life experiences of Dave Fishwick; The Bank of Dave tells the story of how a working class Burnley man and self-made millionaire fought to set up a community bank so that he could help the local businesses of Burnley not only survive, but thrive. In his bid to help his beloved community of Burnley he has to take on the elitist financial institutions of London and fight to receive the first, new banking license to be issued in over 100 years.

Fry plays young London lawyer Hugh who is hired by Dave to fight his case against the British banking system.
