‘Antboy’ Review: A Fun Little Superhero Movie, You Know, For Kids
It’s possible you haven’t noticed, but Hollywood is in a bit of a superhero glut right now. This isn’t a bad thing — especially if the mediocre fare is balanced out with fantastic titles like Captain America: The Winter Soldier — but they all seem to be aimed at the same target demographic. Where are the comic book adaptations for Presbyterians? Or bodybuilders? Or even for kids? Antboy is a new film from Denmark that tries to address that last gap with a story and style aimed squarely at the pre-teen crowd. Pelle (Oscar Dietz) is a shy kid, small for his age, and crushing hard on the most popular girl in class. Trouble continues when he tries to help a kid being bullied and instead ends up chased into an abandoned yard, but it’s there where he’s bitten by a genetically modified ant. Soon he’s discovering new abilities like super strength, wall...

Larger than life trailer for superhero movie Antboy
Crime fighters are everywhere these days, but it's not often we get to see a Danish superhero in action. When 12-year-old Pelle (Oscar Dietz) is bitten by an ant he develops superpowers. Aided by comic book nerd Wilhelm (Samuel Ting Graf), Pelle creates the secret superhero identity of Antboy. Which means, understandably, we also need a super villain to spice things up a little. Say hello to archenemy The Flea, a super powered itch Antboy must scratch if he's to save the world. Avoiding advances from lovelorn girls along the way. Obviously. Overflowing with charm and the occasional cliché, it really is a great looking trailer that deserves to find an audience, so here's hoping Antboy - which made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September - gets picked up for distribution around the world. Directed by Ask Hasselbalch, Antboy is scheduled for release in Denmark on...

Check Out Antboy, The Latest Danish Superhero
I make no secret of the fact that I’m unimpressed by superhero films. They all seem more of the same thing, and the endless sequels do not inspire great hope for the future of filmmaking. But I have to admit that the trailer for Danish superhero film Antboy intrigues me.

First of all, Antboy is not a millionaire by day, masked crusader by night; nor is he a super-soldier, alien, billionaire-playboy-philanthropist, or angsty-teenager. He’s just a little kid, bitten by a very special ant. He’s also Danish, which is a nice change.

Antboy was directed by Ask Hasselbalch from the books by Kenneth Bøgh Andersen. That doesn’t mean much to American audiences, but the trailer provides a charming glimpse into what we can expect from Antboy - and it is not Kick-Ass. Actually, in appearance it’s far more like Wes Anderson directing a superhero film.
